Baby eating in car

I think letting a 15 month old eat in the car while driving is a choking hazard and we shouldn’t ever allow it. Partner says I’m OTT. Am I?

Yanbu - yes they probablt won't choke but what are you going to do if they do?

Mrsm010918 · 25/10/2023 06:27

I think it would depend on what they were eating tbh.

Obviously something hard would be a straight up no but if it was a melty baby snack I would consider it as long as someone was sat in the back with them

YANBU at all however I have had this thought and still let my baby have a snack in the car. It’s a risk for sure. But real life means sometimes they’re ravenous and you gotta be somewhere. It’s an assessment of risk you make at the time much like many other parenting decisions. Unless you’re talking routinely.

Eg co-sleeping (which I did with all 3 babies) - to follow on from poster above, they probably won’t get smothered but what are you gonna do if they do??

Choking deaths really aren't common in children - its a bigger problem in over 65s. You can reduce risks by choosing carefully what you allow them to eat & avoiding high risk foods. Life is full of risks and we have to cope taking some of them.

DeepFriedBananas · 25/10/2023 06:46

I wouldn't give them something that is a potential choking hazard, such as grapes, but anything else then I didn't have an issue with.
Apart from ice cream, dear god, that stuff gets everywhere. Doors, windows, upholstery, backs of seats, the dog, my hair! Everywhere but their mouths!

My kids were never ever going to eat in the car. Till you are on a 3 hour drive and hit traffic.....and want to get where you are going and not stop. Then I ised to pass food back .....I think we might have even got to the stage where I did full on packed lunches in anticipation.....

One was probably 15 months.....given I have 3 kids. But they were also (gasp) forward facing....so I could see them in the mirror.

Sometimes needs must.....

They are all teenagers now and apart from. 1 who likes a bag of crisps on the journey....they prefer not to eat in the car.

My 15 month was rear facing so I didn’t let him eat in the car until he was front facing. After that I was ok with it.

Pipistrellus · 25/10/2023 07:23

I always stopped every two hours so there was no need. I don't like anyone eating in my car!

Choking risk and bad for car seats too, dropped food can lead to mould in hidden parts which weaken them in a crash.
Only do it occasionally now they're a bit older if someone is sat in the back and it's a dry, mess free food
