Hotel hygiene

I’m currently on holiday in a 5* hotel. Will
state now that I am fully aware that I am very privileged, and that yes, this is a first world problem.

So I came back to our room after breakfast today, and housekeeping was making up the room. Lovely, smiley woman, signalled that I could come in as she was nearly done.

She then picked up our coffee cups which were draining on the counter next to the coffee machine, gave them, and the counter, a wipe with what looked like one of our used hand towels, and left. She did seem to be in a big hurry, I assume because she has to get through a certain number of rooms within a time-frame.

I was a bit non-plussed, and said nothing at the time (I realise now that that would have been better). But I’m now wondering how long those coffee cups have been ‘on the go’, and does she just rinse them in the sink and give them a dry with a dirty hand towel between guests too….ugh. I feel a bit grim thinking she just used my/DH’s towel, never mind a stranger’s.

I really want to complain and ask for new cups every day, but I’m not a massive dick, and realise that cleaning up after relatively rich people for little pay is not a great job, and I certainly wouldn’t want her to lose it.

What would you do?

Hotels, even the most expensive ones are basically disgusting. this is why I wipe all surfaces I touch when I arrive and thereafter keep the room clean myself. and try not to think about the bedding as I am sure they changed it with dirty hands. maybe next time I might take my own sheets....

After contracting cryptosporidium from a 4 star hotel. Yes proven .
I always always clean everything .

Ashtara10 · 23/10/2023 22:07

I agree. Same job. Hotel is all about looking clean and they don't supply you properly either.

Ibizafun · 23/10/2023 22:20

You don't have to justify not wanting to use grim cups, Thats disgusting even if it were a 3 star hotel. The cleaners' lives are not your problem, you've paid for the hotel and I'd be complaining for sure.

Actually, I do all of that! The joy of OCD.

Me too! It described me exactly. 🙁

MsFogi · 23/10/2023 22:43

Oh yes - when I worked as a chambermaid as a student we all worked on the basis that it 'just had to look clean' and used the dirty towels and bedding to shine everything up. And if any pillowcases etc looked unused they didn't get changed. Hotels are absolutely grim.

I always wash the cups and the kettle. Apparently people piss in the kettle for fun. Now I always wash them.

Ooh, thats pretty disgusting, I had always naively assumed that coffee mugs would be swapped for freshly cleaned from a sterile dishwasher, but then you don't see a trolley of fresh clean mugs going from room to room each morning! Sometimes what you don't know won't hurt you, but after reading this I'll scald my hotel mugs in freshly boiled water!

A sterile dishwasher!?

Whats that?

And please don't use the term 'Karen'

It’s a well-known term for someone who likes to make issues out of nothing.
This may come as a shock, but you can’t dictate what people say online.

It's a well known term for WOMEN who like to make issues out of nothing. I'm not dictating what people say online - I'm asking them.

they also dry the bathroom tiles, etc with used bathroom towels. dont trust anything is clean there. nothing is as they look like.
i dont think there is hygeine in hotels. you are on your own.
wouldnt touch any handle, remote, light switches, phone there without wiping very well first, i still get the ick.

Yep, I do the same. I leave the do not disturb sign on the door so they don't come in each day and make everything dirty again.

All they do is make the room look clean, they don't actually clean it!

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 24/10/2023 07:31

just rinse them in the sink and give them a dry with a dirty hand towel

I thought this was common knowledge, that they do this?

Wash them yourself in the sink with the soap and give a proper good rinse. That's what I always do.

It might be well used, but most folk with any level of respect for others (and those who also happen to be called Karen) don't use it as an insult.

Lealea4 · 24/10/2023 08:57

Yes, that's how it works in most hotels, unfortunately. I worked at one and it was the same. When I come to the hotel, I first wash glasses, teaspoons and cups and then wipe the toilet seat with toilet paper or baby wipes:-)).

StarlightLady · 24/10/2023 14:14

It was me who said l take J cloths. And unashamedly so. I travel a lot for work, including overseas and they are so handy for lots of things including the odd spillage.
