3x car seats VS Audi A7

Hi all

posting for traffic ☺️

we have baby no 3 on the way and currently have an Audi A7. Dcs are 7 (8 in April) and 2 (3 in May). Baby due 29 dec.

dc1: 7 year old weighs 25kg so I understand he can go in a backless booster seat? He’s currently in a high back chair that also has the 5 point harness and then adapts to use just the main seatbelt as they grow.

Dc2: 2 year old is currently 13kg and in a huge isofix swivel car seat thing.

we can’t fit a normal car seat in the middle space that’s left but dc2’s car seat is safe for a newborn so we are thinking to move dc2 into dc1 car seat and put dc1 into a backless booster but unsure if it will fit in the middle.

has anyone managed to fit 3 car seats into an a7 with kids of similar ages?

or are we better to do away with the isofix swivel thing and just use one of the infant carrier seats with out isofix, just main seatbelt for newborn?

Any advice welcome!

Isofix swivel seats are very bulky. You might be best off getting rid of that one. Infant carriers are generally fairly small and easy to fit in and around other seats, it will get trickier once DC3 is in the second stage.

Is your 2yo rear facing or forward facing? Because the other good option for fitting in multiple seats is to look at the Swedish style rear facing seats for 9-25kg like Axkid Move. They are seatbelt fitted, so can go in any of the three positions if your car manual allows, they are rear facing which is the safest option, and they can be fitted with a certain amount of flexibility between being closer to the backrest vs closer to the front seat, which is extremely helpful when trying to fit three seats together.

Although your 7yo could go onto a backless booster, one with a back is the best option if you can fit it in. The main difference between a backless/high backed booster is the width of the shoulder/head support, which if you're fitting with 2x rear facing seats is often not an issue. It's more of a problem when you're trying to fit in 2 or 3 forward facing side by side, as they butt up against each other.

Are they currently using the seatbelt or harness? As the harness is almost certainly outgrown by weight, unless you have a specialist/imported seat. Most of them max out at 18kg with a couple going up to 25kg.

Isofix in general can be tricky because car manufacturers often position the isofix points slightly further away from the side doors as this helps them get a better side impact protection score on NCAP but this does reduce space in the centre seat when you have 2x isofix seats fitted. It can be better to go for seatbelt fitted seats.

In general the best thing to do would be to find an ERF specialist and see if you can have a play around with different car seat models. Look here to see if you can find one locally:
