Christmas Day meal

Do people still cook a roast on the day? yang

Or do more and more people cook something else? tabu

Id like to have a curry or a red wine casserole but my dd2 loves a roast dinner so I cook one each year and do the other dishes around xmas day. It is just the two of us and I do love cooking, so its not a chore and I prepare everything before hand.

Thinking this year I may get some ready prepared stuff from M&S. Oh and we never have turkey, but lamb or chicken - with all the trimmings though

I haven’t cooked a roast for dinner for the past 7 years. To me, a roast is a roast any time of year and doesn’t shout ‘Christmas’ to me. Much rather make something else and enjoy the day with my DC.

Broodywuz · 22/10/2023 15:14

I think most people do still have the traditional roast with all the trimmings but I'm definitely hearing of more and more people having alternatives

Womencanlift · 22/10/2023 15:21

To me a roast with all the trimmings is Christmas.

But then where I grew up it wasn’t common to have a roast every Sunday and even if you went out to eat on a Sunday you could get a roast but also the rest of the menu too

So I enjoy it a lot come Christmas

WhateverMate · 22/10/2023 15:31

We love a traditional roast.

DH cooks one every Sunday and on Christmas day.

bananaboats · 22/10/2023 15:33

I've never done a roast as neither me or DH is particularly keen. We just pick something we fancy so have steaks one year, salmon, steak pie or gone out for a Chinese or an Indian.

Finestreason · 22/10/2023 15:37

yang or tabu made me laugh

I don’t yang or tabu - we eat out!

Hipnotised · 22/10/2023 15:41

Yang ;)

gabsdot45 · 22/10/2023 15:43

It's so funny that you posted this. We have just finished our dinner (Sunday roast cooked by me) and I asked everyone how they would feel about getting a takeaway this year for Christmas dinner.
It was a unanimous yes!!!

gotomomo · 22/10/2023 15:44

Yes turkey, love a big roast

WhamBamThankU · 22/10/2023 15:46

We have a different theme each year. Last year was a birthday party for baby Jesus so we had a buffet and birthday cake 😅 we've previously done Mexican whilst wearing taches and hats, Australian bbq wearing cork hats with inflatable kangaroos round the house. Lots of fun to be had!

Grapewrath · 22/10/2023 15:46

We have roast as my kids like tradition but I’d love to have a curry out in a restaurant.
I have friends who do a buffet on Xmas day because they like to be present with their kids and set up/play with toys. My kids are a lot older but I’d definitely adopt that idea if they were little.
Christmas traditions are what you make them imo and different for every family

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/10/2023 15:47

Yes, love traditional Christmas dinner. It’s the only time of year I get bread sauce

wingingit1987 · 22/10/2023 15:50

We normally do a traditional dinner but I don’t know if I can be bothered this year- I’m nightshift Xmas eve and Xmas day so would rather not waste time cooking.

SiobhanSharpe · 22/10/2023 15:51

We usually go away right after Christmas and last year we left on Boxing day so we just finished up anything that was in the house on Christmas day -- I think we had croissants for breakast and a fry-up for lunch. Excellent.

SoRainbowRhythms · 22/10/2023 15:54

We're doing a seafood feast - a seafood platter, prawn cocktail (a long standing Christmas tradition!) the salmon en croute and dauphinoise.

LeonBlack · 22/10/2023 15:55

We have the full-on traditional turkey roast with every trimming known to man.

But this is only because my husband does it, and loves it. If it was down to me, we'd eat out as I never cook.

Papyrophile · 22/10/2023 15:59

There will be an elaborate roast here, but probably not turkey, as this year half the family will be overseas, and we don't like turkey enough to eat it for half of January.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 22/10/2023 15:59

I get the Xmas bundle for 2 from Cook and add a few bits from Morrisons. All timings are done, just whack bits n the oven.

Doing a hog roast on Boxing Day with baguettes, stuffing and apple sauce so people can just sort themselves out.

Dontcallmescarface · 22/10/2023 16:08

I haven't cooked or eaten a traditional Christmas dinner since 2019. Neither DP or me are particularly keen on roast dinners anyway so, as there is now only us on Christmas day, we just have what we fancy. Last year it was peanut butter chicken and rice DP made, no idea yet what this year's will be.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 22/10/2023 16:09

I only really have a roast dinner at Christmas and Easter. They’re so dull, except when you pull out all the Christmas stops and do it properly , but who has the time for that much cooking every weekend? Not a fan of the “ignore meat in oven til it’s shoe leather, frozen potatoes, plain boiled veg, Bisto and Paxo” roast dinner. A Christmas roast dinner is a thing of beauty, with so many components, and all the more magical for being a once-a-year moment.

Ultimately though Christmas Day is the pits HOWEVER it has to exist so the best day, Christmas Eve, can take place with its anticipation and preparation of the stuffing, and the second best day, boxing day, can happen with leftovers stuffed into sandwiches, the big walk, and more leftovers made into spicy hash for dinner. Exemption made for Christmas Day supper of pickled egg, salad, crisps, leftovers, cornichons, Christmas cake and a chocolate coin all on one plate. Quality Street garnish.

This is what we do. We do a roast another day.

UggyPow · 22/10/2023 16:22

We are stuck this year. We have decided a turkey is not worth it (there are 4 of us but one doesn't eat anything other than parsnips & roast potatoes) but still haven't decided what to actually have

Nodashians · 22/10/2023 16:23

yang
I get everything from M&S and cook a roast.
I make about three roasts a month and find it an easy meal to cook.

Love the buffet idea. I have a 1 year old so I'm tempted to start this as our tradition. Maybe a takeaway Xmas eve, buffet food Xmas day and then full roast with all the trimmings in boxing day. I enjoy cooking and I'm a dab hand at roast dinners, but I don't want to spend hours in the kitchen stressing when I could be playing with my child and watching movies on Christmas day.
