Sound proofing living room alcoves.

I've asked this question in property but didn't get a response, so I'll try my luck here.

I live in a 1930s semi, living room to living room style.
The relatively new next door neighbours are quite unintentionally ( I think ) loud. For example I'm often in silence in my living room and I can hear everything on their TV, that kind of thing.
I'm redecorating soon. I'm thinking of getting noise reduction panels in the alcoves and then fit the alcoves with shelves an a bottom cupboard.
The only other thin point in this room is the wood burner.
Has anyone used these panels before? Was it helpful and worth the cost?

Not used them but following with interest as our home sounds similar. The neighbours are like church mice but they're getting older and I dread a noisy family moving in.

hi.

like yours our house is 1930 semi with the joined living rooms. Alcoves and chimney with log burner. Based in Hampshire

Up until 2 years ago we had very sedate attached neighbours.
they sold up and the new people were louder - not overly loud. But they were a young family vs our older semi retired old neighbours

we could hear the new neighbours TV - mainly as he’d attached it to his alcove wall. on the shared wall
plus some of their louder kiddie play time, and the couples arguements

So before decorating. I did some research into soundproofing the alcoves and came across a company called
“airtight noise check”
they specialise in this very thing

they did an online video call with me to discuss the options and the wall sizes that needed proofing. and gave me a couple of options and quotes.

Think I went with the mid priced option that came in at £1500

  • went with a 100mm thick stud wall placed in the alcoves which they filled with different types of sound proofing material. They moved the plug sockets to the new soundproofed alcove wall.
plasterboard’d the finished wall then plastered it and replaced the coving and skirting

left me with a wall that was ready to decorate

the alcoves were 300mm deep. So I hardly notice the lose of depth to the alcoves.

The sound reduction was amazing.
I’m very pleased with the end result. Ok it cost a bit.
but for the ease and peace of living. It’s been priceless.

annoyingly 3 months after I had the work completed. The neighbours split up and put the house back on the market (explained the regular arguements)

On the up side
the new new neighbours have commented that they can’t hear us at all - likewise same our end

Thanks @Rob198888 ,
That’s really useful information. I will look up this company. It sounds like a really good solution.
