To reduce my days from September?

I’m a teacher due to go back to work in June after maternity leave.

I want to go part time but ideally I’d like this to start from September so I get full pay over the summer. Is this possible? Thanks.

You may get responses if you post in the staff room.

I did this, but my DSs are 25+, so it was a long time ago! Phone the school at your earliest opportunity, so they know your intentions and can see if they can accommodate it. Are you in primary or secondary? I found being a part-time teacher & part-time Mum incredibly hard. It felt like I could never sit down thinking, "Great, everything's done, now I can rest." There was always something that needed doing! However, DH worked abroad & I had no family nearby to help out. Your situation make mean it's doable.

Is that allowed? Seems a bit sneaky to me

MrsMurphyIWish · 22/10/2023 08:52

I did this. Yes you can as our contracts are Sept 1st to Aug 31st.

Mummy08m · 22/10/2023 08:53

It's absolutely "allowed" but at employer's discretion.

I did go back to work just a couple of weeks before the summer hol to get paid over the break, but my employer's compromise was that I was under the new part time hours from the start.

MrsMurphyIWish · 22/10/2023 08:54

I actually went back week before end of term in July!

happylittlesloth · 22/10/2023 08:55

Ah right fair enough

MrsMurphyIWish · 22/10/2023 08:57

Oh, and remember part time hours aren’t guaranteed. You can request flexible working but can’t demand it.

I ended up going back to work full time quickly. I found I just ended up trying to cram a full time timetable into part time. I’m secondary so was still responsible for all marking, parents evenings, open evenings. I used to go to events in my days off as it was still classed as “directed” so some thing to consider as well.

Surely what should dictate when and if you switch to part time hours is when your employer can arrange cover? Funding another employee to cover you will cost proportionally more.
