To feel disheartened by my boss

In my review I said to my boss that I would like work toward promotion to the next band. His reply was "Woah girl!"....then saying "you're not ready, would you agree?"

I have pushed on working on my promo case and have been working internally with a wonderful mentor who has been a breath of fresh air. I feel valued and heard by her. She is more senior than him. She has said she thinks I'm.reafy for promo so I have told him this knowng he would never encourage me of his own accord.

We reviewed my application and I asked him if he thought I was ready. There was a pause.....then...you won't look.like a chump for applying. Later he said I had been working at the higher band for over a year.

Our mid yesr rating to reflect working at higher band is 4 but I could see he marked me 3. I queried it.....he said...the comment about you working to a higher band was just words to make your application sound good. He then asked if I was taking noted. I said yes. He said he was uncomfortable with that. I said why?. I am just trying to understand. It had escalated at that stage so we agreed to disagree.

I feel really confused and disheartened. Am I missing something? How would you deal with this?

His reply was "Woah girl!"

He's a sexist twat. Bet he wouldn't have said 'woah boy!' to a male employee. Apply for a promotion elsewhere with the support of your mentor and leave him behind.

Absolutely this

God, awful man. I hope you get promoted way above him.

Thank you. Such a difficult situation as I love my job otherwise. Just feel unsupported and constantly battling to get anywhere with him

Has anyone been on a similar situation? Did you manage to resolve it?

I have been honest with him and said I don't feel supported in my role but I'm not sure if anything will change.

He's told you in no uncertain terms that he doesn't back you.

I would be applying from jobs that would take me up and away. No point in waiting for his blessing is there? It might never come.......

Definitely look for other jobs. This was an unprofessional and sexist way to speak to you.
No wonder so many women in the workplace suffer imposter syndrome.
You are more than capable, demonstrably so.
Move on somewhere you’ll be appreciated.

So he's an asshole and you know that.

Is he on the interview panel? Does he have any influence in on the outcome? Will you still have to report if you get the job?

I've had it before where my boss discouraged my promotion - mainly because I contributed a lot to his tram yet he took the credit for it. After an unsuccessful attempt which I knew he blocked,I applied on a different team and got the job.

Don't let him influence your decision or career. I would even discuss his reaction with your mentor. Apply and,/or get away from him.
