To ask a doctors appointment for a period?

I wasn’t sure where to post this but wondering if anyone has experienced the same. I’ve been on microgynon since the birth of my son 8 years ago. About a year ago I was having heavy periods so started taking it back to back as recommended by the nurse. So there was no 7 day break and my periods stopped altogether as expected.

I never, ever miss a pill as I am on antidepressants and take them all together in the evening so I know that this is not an issue.

However, the last 5 days I have experienced light bleeding which today has become heavier including clots.

I just wondered whether this is just something that could happen and was normal or whether it’s something I should be speaking to the doctor for? I don’t want to be dramatic as it could be a normal period but was told taking it back to back would stop this. I just don’t want to waste the doctors time!

Contraceptive review with the practice nurse first maybe?
Microgynon resulted in breakthrough bleeding for me at one point, despite taking it for a few years with no issues. As I had heavy periods anyway I too had clots, all sorted by changing pills. Can’t remember what to now, it was 2 other pills, a coil and a hysterectomy ago!

Sounds like breakthrough bleeding. I’d be asking for a medication review.
And consider a Mirena coil instead, as it thins the lining of your womb. You don’t want a thick lining.

What age are you?

Weepingskies · 21/10/2023 17:39

If you take the pill continuously you will often get breakthrough bleeding and most doctors will recommend you stop for four days when this happens and allow a period to come. A mirena coil might well be a good alternative but you can still get some breakthrough bleeding with this. The other thing to bear in mind is whether you could have been exposed to any bugs which can cause irregular bleeding eg through unprotected sex. Your GP will be totally happy to discuss all of this with you so feel free to ask for an appointment. There’s also a good leaflet here you could have a look at https://www.letstalkaboutit.nhs.uk/media/whrl3ibq/continuous-combined-pill-taking.pdf

It could be breakthrough bleeding which can be common when taking the pill back to back. Maybe have a break for between 4 and 7 days and then start it again.

I take a pill which is designed to be taken continuously, and I had one mystery period for no obvious reason, after 12 years without. I did see the doctor, and I was sent for a scan, so it obviously is worth making an appointment as there may be possible causes to rule out. They never found a reason for mine, and it never happened again.
