Online delivery - how often do supermarkets give you substitutes?

I've not been getting shopping delivered for that long, but I've found that every time I've had 2-3 things substituted, which is fine. However I've just received an email for today's delivery with 2 things substituted for something completely different, not even close to the original.
I just wonder what goes through their mind. I can send them back but I'm not able to choose something else in their place, so I'll have to go out and buy them, which defeats the whole object. Has anyone else had these problems?

Perhaps if we all said where we lived, town or nearest city even, a pattern might form?
for instance, we do not use the small Asda nearest to us any more, yet our daughter
in another area also has deliveries from a relatively small Asda with no trouble at all, be it goods, delivery times, drivers.
Now we have ascertained which companies use distribution centres we are sticking with them, no more Friday lottery of will they won’t they bring what we ordered.

Online shoppers should not be short changed, with shoddy service, yellowed veg, wrinkled fruit, bizarre substitutions.

I often go for Tesco or Morrisons (lower basket min) and most deliveries have at least 1 sub, I think Asda was worst so don't tend to use now. Tesco does allow you to leave note for picker for what you'd want instead or untick those don't want subbed which is helpful.
It's more annoying when they cancel an out of stock item rather than offer a sub, once it was loaf of bread and can't believe there wasn't any other options in store. I've had a few weird subs which assume was computer choice and perhaps pickers don't see original item or able to overrule it. Also the cost when it's changed to more expensive item or smaller size for same price which you'd not bought in store but now stuffed as need it.

Ocado order due here today, 60
items and no substitutions which I think is fairly standard for them.

I think I’m phasing Waitrose out, some of the use by dates are ridiculously short, I had items that were actually past their date a few weeks ago. I think Waitrose are only as good as the local store.

it depends on your local supermarket, and the picker.

so at the moment there is an influx of new pickers for the xmas season. They have to hit targets, don't really get a lot of time to consider the subs that are suggested, which in most cases are pretty ridiculous.

some long term pickers are fast and have the luxury of having time to override the suggested subs. Personally I always sub for better if I can. It's not something the company pushes for us to do, because it cost them money.

But the supermarket at the moment is shafting all its employees from managers down, what once was a great place to work for, seems to be actively forcing its employees to leave. The place will likely not be around for many more years.

So if you are lucky enough to get me as your picker, and you are buying basic range you'll fine you get the best range sub instead, Or if your small multi pack is not available you'll get a mega family size pack of the same brand.

Fuck it, the company is fleecing its customers and employees left right and centre. So you'll get the best I can give you 👍

my customer return % is something like 0.01% Grin

If you order from Tesco and they sub a more expensive item, they don't charge you the difference. I don't know about Morrisons.

But why? Best case you get a useful substitution, worst case you reject it at the door and it goes straight back to store for a refund.

no fobbing off required

@apintofwine

im vegetarian, im diabetic so I eat a very very low carb diet to control it without drugs. There are very very few foods I can eat & it's hard enough for me to find a suitable substitute if the item I want isn't available. There's no way a random picker would find something suitable.

there's just no point in creating work for people when I know it won't be suitable, when I can just get it elsewhere or do without.

shellyleppard · 24/10/2023 19:32

Op I use Morrison. First time today they substituted. Bleach instead of toilet cleaner so not too far off 😂
