Posting for traffic:
I've just taken delivery of a top which was made by a German company.
In the care instructions, in English, it says "Do not iron the crash".🤔

I have no clue what this means but, in other languages, I offer you:
Crash nicht bugein
Crash net stricken
Crash no de hierro.

Google translate isn't helping.

Any ideas gratefully received.

The garment is made up of a few different fabric types so am keen to avoid ironing "the crash", once I figure out which bit of it is it.

Well the German says ‘do not iron the crash’ but my German isn’t good enough to know what a crash is.

ElleLeopine · 21/10/2023 13:10

Are there any care instructions in German?
Did you buy it online? Can you post a link?

Wherethewildthymeblows · 21/10/2023 13:10

Photo of top so we can guess from that?

Without a photo, I am guessing trimming, pleats, um......

Chartreuse45 · 21/10/2023 13:14

This is an example from a German website. Does this resemble a part of the too?

Using @MadeOfAllWork ‘s link as a hint, is there part of the top which is a contrasting texture, for example crumpled? It might be telling you not to iron that bit so it keeps its distinctive look.

Iphianassa · 21/10/2023 13:16

Ah, cross- posted with @Chartreuse45 . That’s exactly what I meant.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/10/2023 13:17

Dry clean only? (pure guess)

Chartreuse45 · 21/10/2023 13:20

I know it says crush but apparently the Germans got mixed up as the definition for crash is that is comes from the English word that means crushed (zerknittert).

CeeCeeDeeBee · 21/10/2023 13:22

It means fold or pleat in this context. Or sometimes an appliqué, so if there's something sewn on.

Amiable · 21/10/2023 13:27

It should be Crush don't iron, ie, it's a crushed style material - don't iron it or you will flatten and spoil it

Wingedharpy · 21/10/2023 13:28

Thank you all - most helpful.

@MadeOfAllWork 's link made immediate sense.

@Iphianassa -spot on! It's not crumpled look but it is made of a sort of knitted effect with a contrasting sparkly thread running through it so,I presume that's the bit to avoid ironing.

I just knew you wise souls would point me in the right direction.

Now, could one of you just nip round with a ladder to see what's causing the damp patch on my bedroom ceiling?! 😉

Crash is a type of fabric

Wherethewildthymeblows · 21/10/2023 13:43

Damp patch on ceiling, assuming you have no pipes above, will almost definitely be a missing tile on the roof. If you can look through a ceiling hatch and see daylight anywhere, that will be the place.

Iphianassa · 21/10/2023 14:01

@Wingedharpy ,
" it is made of a sort of knitted effect with a contrasting sparkly thread running through it"

New idea in that case. It might be that the sparkly thread would melt under the heat of the iron. The sparkly bit might be a fine plastic thread,

Either way, you know which bit of the top to avoid with the iron.

unsync · 21/10/2023 14:35

Damp patch - flashing / guttering / missing tile / water tank. Dependent on location and what is above / adjacent.

MadeOfAllWork · 21/10/2023 14:52

Now I’m confused. Why are there two posts on this thread about a damp ceiling?

BaronessBomburst · 21/10/2023 14:56

Water

coveredindoghairs · 21/10/2023 15:40

I think "stricken" can mean something like knit/knitting, so yes, I'd avoid ironing the part with the knitted effect.

Ktime · 21/10/2023 15:42

Maybe crash is from the same root word as crease or crush?

Trivium4all · 21/10/2023 16:48

"nicht bügeln" means "do not iron". "Crash" or "Crash-Optik" is a fabric treatment that makes it look distressed or crumpled. So, without seeing the garment, I would assume they don't want you to iron the bits that are supposed to look distressed (which stands to reason). Do you have a picture of the garment?

Agreed. And stick your head up through the loft hatch sooner rather than later. If it's a leaking water tank it could bring the ceiling down.
