To tape this air vent up?

Sitting in my living room and there's an air vent on the wall. The wind is blowing right through it and even with the heating on, the room is freezing. The vent cover is also coming unscrewed from the wall which isn't helping! The draft is so bad it's just blown my candle out! Thinking about taping it over with masking tape and maybe bubble wrap, at least until this storm passes over! Aibu?

Is the vent there because you have a gas or solid fuel fire? These days if you have a solid fuel fire over a certain kw fitted the fitter legally has to install an air vent. Also for a gas fire.

I had to have one fitted when my multi fiel stove was installed. Like yours it let a howling gale through.
I taped a piece of gauze over it, which cut down most of the draught but would allow any noxious gases out. Don't know if that was really allowed though. I no longer live in that house.

No, I only have a combi boiler (which runs the central heating) and that's in the kitchen and is vented separately. No fire at all.

In that case get it covered and look for a more permanent solution when you can

Cover the bugger up if it's pointless.
I wouldn't uncover it after the storm, either - sounds like maybe there used to be a gas / solid fuel fire that's not there anymore?

I had the one in the living bricked up when they took away the old back boiler and put the combi in, and the one in the kitchen I've taped up because it lets in so much cold it's pointless having the heating on 🤦🏼‍♀️ I don't have a gas cooker and the combi is upstairs in the airing cupboard with its own ventilation.

Not sure if there was any solid fuel system in before - I don't think so, but I've only lived here a year so can't say for sure. It's a flat so I'm guessing it's an air brick type thing for ventilation!

It's covered with a layer of masking tape, then foil, then some cardboard for insulation. All taped down well and yet it's still "breathing" in the wind! (aka the stuff is going in and out!)

It's covered and the room is already significantly warmer! I didn't realise how much of a draft it was letting in until the candle went out!
