Aibu to go to GP about fingernail line?

Aibu to go to GP about fingernail line?

I called in to price a manicure yesterday because I haven’t had one since lockdown and it was a ‘treat yourself’ moment.

the lovely girl explained she could do it there and then but leave my ring finger out as she wants me to have a GP look at the vertical line (pic) It’s hard to capture with bad lighting but now she has mentioned it, it’s all I can see.

thoughts if I’m being unreasonable to request a GP appointment?

thanks

Did she say why? Have you googled it?

MsChatterbox · 20/10/2023 06:52

I know the reason why she has said it, do you? My husband has one too and it got it checked out but all way fine.

muddyford · 20/10/2023 06:53

Everyone gets these once in a while. I have never been to my GP about it. DH gets them sometimes and they crack, but loads of OTC products to brush on to heal it.

Lucky you having a local GP service where you can get an appointment for a fingernail bump. I’ve been trying to get one for weeks for horrendous menopause symptoms.

Whowahway123 · 20/10/2023 06:54

There was something lurking in the back of my mind about cancer, dramatic I know.

However she googled on her phone ‘subungual melanoma’ and handed it to me after I asked can she just not put gels on over it…

Go get it checked. Better to be safe than sorry.

vestedinterests · 20/10/2023 06:55

Could you check with the pharmacist first? If not, then make an appointment.

Classicalyunderstated · 20/10/2023 06:55

I can't realy see what's going on if it's the nail it's self vertical lines are due to aging but if its pigmented line of the nail bed I'd get a gp appointment

coaltitsrock · 20/10/2023 06:55

It may be nothing but definitely get it checked out. It's a very clear line.

Whowahway123 · 20/10/2023 06:56

I haven’t requested an appointment, that is literally my Aibu! I don’t want to waste the GPs when there are people like you who actually require an appointment!

I can’t tell from the picture - is it a bump along the nail or is it a darker line under the nail bed? A bump in the nail I would see a pharmacist as it may be fungal etc but a line under the bed I would get it checked. Better to be safe than sorry

TheyreEatingThemInNelsonAndTheBluff · 20/10/2023 06:57

It’s really common to have verticals lines, especially once we start to get older.

Vertical nail ridges are fairly common and nothing to worry about. Vertical nail ridges extend from the cuticle to the tip of the nail. With age, vertical nail ridges may become more numerous or prominent because of changes in cell turnover within the nail.

OP that’s nice but I imagine it’s attitudes like this that leave people with issues for longer than they need. You’re not wasting GP time for having a health issue looked at - it’s literally what they are there for. You are just as entitled to an appointment as anyone else.

ShoesoftheWorld · 20/10/2023 06:58

Hard to tell from the picture, but I would listen to the nail tech. Any changes that may (NB: probably won't) point to melanoma need checking out, with the same sort of urgency as a breast lump.

onlyoneoftheregimentinstep · 20/10/2023 06:59

If someone who has a lot of experience with nails suggests you make an appointment I would take that advice. You're obviously not in the habit of wasting the GP's time, and I'm sure they'd rather you were safe than sorry.

Formaddict · 20/10/2023 07:00

My aunt went to the GP for this reason. They referred her on to see a specialist.

All was fine - but better to be safe than sorry.

Moomoomo · 20/10/2023 07:01

Chances are it's nothing but definitely get it checked.

Word of warning, the GP probably won't just offer words of reassurance and send you on your way. They will most likely do an emergency dermatology referral which is enough to send anyone into a panic!

Pipsquiggle · 20/10/2023 07:01

I don't understand what the issue is. A lot of my nails look like OPs and I have never been told to go to the GP. I thought it was an aging thing

FabFitFifties · 20/10/2023 07:01

Yes, get it checked

coaltitsrock · 20/10/2023 07:02

@TheyreEatingThemInNelsonAndTheBluff you need glasses. this post is not about nail ridges 🙄

The dark vertical line under her nail could be a type of skin cancer.

ReturnOfTheRainMac · 20/10/2023 07:03

Just get it checked. That's literally what the GP is there for. Don't listen to shit from people saying they can't get an appt. Cancer is worse than menopause if it is that so don't let them trump you or make you feel bad. You deserve a doctors appointment and are no less important than anyone else.

Prescottdanni123 · 20/10/2023 07:04

Get it checked. You would for a dodgy looking mole and lines like that on nails can be a sign of cancer too so go to the GP.
