AIBU to ask what food you would serve at this kids party?

So, I'm having a kids party this Sunday from 2 til 4pm. Around 35-40 kids expected. My original plan was just to provide snacks (crisps, cheddars, party rings, chocolate fingers etc etc) as it's not over a meal time, but now I'm second guessing myself.

What food would you serve? Ages are 3-5 year olds and venue is just a local hall with bouncy castle and disco.

WIBU to just serve unhealthy snacks (as those are the things that my kids would always prefer)? Or should I spend even more money and put on some proper food?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Party snacks is perfect anything else is probably a waste of money

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 19/10/2023 20:52

Food sounds perfect, it's all the kids will eat at that age in 2 hours with all the excitement anyway

Ribena20 · 19/10/2023 20:53

You could put out some chopped grapes, cucumber sticks etc as a token gesture of something healthy 😉

Tortugaa · 19/10/2023 20:53

Sounds great it’s not over a meal time. I’d maybe put some healthier snacks out too like fruit, breadsticks and maybe a few samdwiches

AllBlackEverything · 19/10/2023 20:53

Throw in a some mini sausage rolls, maybe some sandwich triangles and it sounds great 👍🏻

JayAlfredPrufrock · 19/10/2023 20:54

Sandwiches
Ham
Egg & Cress
Cheese

Sunshineclouds11 · 19/10/2023 20:54

We've had a couple of parties that time lately and other than the sweet snacks there's been some pizzas, fruit and veggies put out.
They work up an appetite so it all gets ate.

Thesearmsofmine · 19/10/2023 20:55

I’d either buy a few pizzas and serve them pre sliced or buy a couple of loaves and do some triangle sandwiches, cheese, jam and ham should do it.

Finteq · 19/10/2023 20:55

I think you need some sandwich triangles at least

Fallenangelofthenorth · 19/10/2023 21:02

I don't think it matters that it's not over a mealtime, in my experience (which feels VAST given the age gaps of my kids I had 14 years of large whole class type parties) they will eat any time of day. The most popular items always seemed to be tuna mayo sandwiches (suitable for kosher and halal too) and cheese puffs. Over and above anything I lovingly made from scratch.

MaryShelley1818 · 19/10/2023 21:03

Hotdogs 🌭 The absolute easiest thing to serve!

mindutopia · 19/10/2023 21:05

Sounds fine. You could throw in some sausages and or sausage rolls. Or some fruit/veg but don’t need to do a meal.

DiamandaTheGreat · 19/10/2023 21:07

I've said it before and I'll doubtless say it again...all they care about is wotsits 🙂

QueenOfWeeds · 19/10/2023 21:08

Life is far too short to chop grapes for 40, surely? PP must have more patience than me. I definitely wouldn’t be bothering with grapes. Cucumber sticks are a good idea.

I’d put some protein out, but of the “cocktail sausages and cubes of cheese” type of effort, rather than anything else.

thaegumathteth · 19/10/2023 21:08

i've usually done
cheese
wee sausages
crisps
juice (a lot)
chopped up grapes
cucumber slices
something sweet

angelopal · 19/10/2023 21:10

Have a few sandwiches as some will eat them. Also sausage rolls or cocktail sausages. Have some fruit and veg. Cucumber normally gets eaten. We did strawberries, raspberries and blueberries at recent kids party.

slithytoveisascientist · 19/10/2023 21:30

Cucumber sticks
Cherry tomatoes
Mini sausages
Breadsticks

And you're golden!

Haveyouseenthemuffinman · 19/10/2023 21:32

Rather than sándwiches I sliced three baguettes up into slices and buttered about half of them recently. Also cooked three square pizzas from Asda - each cut up into 24 pieces.

latenightpartyrings · 19/10/2023 21:33

Cheapo pizza cut into slices, ditto watermelon (to look healthy) and loads of crisps!

Sandwiches are a massive waste of time.

Vivi0 · 19/10/2023 21:33

I’d probably include some ham/cheese sandwiches, pizza and sausage rolls. And lots of juice.

SoftSheen · 19/10/2023 21:36

Do some fruit (strawberries, apple slices) and some small sandwiches (most kids eat cheese or ham). It will be expected. Depending on the kids, you could also do veg sticks and hummus. Remember plenty of drinks!

DanceMumTaxi · 19/10/2023 21:41

I find cheese pizza always goes down well if you can’t be bothered making sandwiches. I do think you need a bit more tbh.

WillowCraft · 19/10/2023 21:43

Strawberries? At the end of October. For 40 children, Definitely wouldn't stretch to that, it will be more than the hire of the hall. I wouldn't worry about healthy, they have all week to eat healthy, it is not your responsibility to worry about that at a party that isn't even over a mealtime.

Maybe add a few plain carb type things in case anyone's actually hungry like water biscuits or breadsticks or sandwiches if you can be bothered.

If you really want to do healthy then carrot sticks and cucumber would be fine.

Hangryhen · 19/10/2023 21:46

I would do some fruit, cheese and some sandwiches as well

PutWoodInHoleDuck · 19/10/2023 21:46

We go to parties most weekends and 2-4 is a common time. Honestly, every single one does a party tea type meal - sandwiches, crisps, biscuits. Doesn't need to be a lot but I do think people will expect it. You only need to allow slightly more than 1/4 of a sandwich per child, based on experience!
