To wonder if those who love winter have very robust mental health or very happy lives?

So I was thinking about this after reading a thread about weather. Lots of posters saying how they loved winter...some even said they love the dark evenings and what really surprised me was the poster who said they loved dark, cold mornings. I assumed everyone hated these!

Now I'm not in a terrible place mentally and I'm not depressed but I do find the dark, rainy, cold days do affect my mood. When the evenings are warm and light I feel so much happier.

I'm really interested in how others don't feel that the winter brings them down and actually enjoy it. Are they naturally happier, more positive type people?

But if you don't like summer much it affect you indoors too. I actually like warm weather when it first appears, I enjoy planting out my balcony and going to the beach. But what really wears thin is not being able to sleep well because of the light and heat (and I know there are blackout curtains but it still wakes me up) and bugs, which get inside the house. Having to chase and catch wasps all the time and daddy longlegs.

And yes I do like going out in the cold and rain, as long as I'm well protected. A walk in the rain up the hill with big boots and coat is fine - even better in the snow. Admittedly part of it is enjoying coming back indoors afterwards

Malarandras · 22/10/2023 12:38

No I just really dislike being too hot. I would rather feel too cold. I do dislike the darkness the winter brings mind.

Exactly this! If you like winter because you like being inside during that weather don’t then say you hate summer because it’s unpleasant outside. Stay in! If you like it in winter do it all year.

But sitting inside in summer isn't the same as doing it in winter.

For example now I'm sat on the sofa in comfy clothes under a blanket, watching TV and messing about on here. I don't enjoy doing that in summer because it's hot and sticky and uncomfortable.

SpicedAppleAndFreshCider · 22/10/2023 12:39

One of my best friends hates winter and she says her mood is lower but I'm like another friend who doesn't mind it. I love winter clothes especially my boots.

I do absolutely prefer Summer though. I love being outside.

I don't enjoy staying in in summer as much because I feel a societal pressure to be out doing something.

So ignore it! Honestly, aren’t you capable of doing what you prefer? Making your own choices?

Comfy linen clothes and a fan? It won’t cost as much as heating does.

My heating isn't on at the moment, hence the comfy clothes and warm blanket.

Even sitting in linen clothing with a fan on me is uncomfortable - I don't like being hot and sweaty. I'm autistic and stuff like that really bothers me to the point that I can't concentrate on anything else. I actually find it stressful.

SpicedAppleAndFreshCider · 22/10/2023 12:51

I have an office job though. I could imagine if I worked outside that I would not like winter as much as I hate being cold.

I feel so sorry for homeless people in winter

It’s autumn - I wouldn’t be using a fan in spring either. I meant in genuinely hot weather.
can you see that being cold is stressful and stops concentration for others though? And lasts way longer and for more sustained periods than hot weather in this country?

Of course - I never said otherwise Confused

Creepyrosemary · 22/10/2023 13:01

I'm in the Netherlands. To me autumn is much darker and more rainy than winter. In winter the skies are more often nice and blue and the sunlight can be quite fierce. The weather is always beautiful when it's freezing and when there is snow the light reflects more. I don't like being cold (I hate being too hot more) but I do like to curl up with a hot cocoa in front of the fireplace. It feels cozy.

Icopewhenihope · 22/10/2023 13:05

I love walking in the rain. One of life’s simple pleasures. Funnily enough I go out in Winter a hell of a lot more than I do in Summer. I do agree that we get a lot more Winter weather in the year than we do Summer and I am grateful for that. I also understand that the majority of people are not. Hating Summer definitely puts me in the minority but my brain works the way it works and dark, dreary, gloomy weather ( I use these words because that’s how most people describe them, I feel the opposite) gives me such a sense of well being and lifts my mood. I couldn’t care less who thinks my brain wiring is wrong, all I care about is having more months I am happy in than ones I am not.
You cannot berate people for not liking sunshine. It is not a conscious decision we make just to piss you off. Some people see it as a personal attack when you say you don’t like Summer on a par with drowning kittens or tripping up old ladies! People like what they like! I wouldn’t dream of judging someone if they said they hated Winter! Why would I judge someone’s personal preferences? Ridiculous.
At the end of the day Winter is coming and I will revel in it. Summer will also roll around like it does every year and I won’t be happy. Swings and roundabouts.

The only thing I don't like about winter is when it's icy underfoot.

I'm like Bambi at the best of times, so add slippy pavements into the mix, and it's a disaster!

😂Im a nervous wreck when it's slippy.

DITTO!!! Indeed, I have disabilities at a level that mean that I can manage in normal weather conditions, but am totally screwed when it's slippy - at least modern technology means that I can WFH if I have to; but it's like house arrest/ the worst times of lockdown for me when it snows. I don't in general get cross when people enjoy/ moan about different weather from me; but I do get unreasonably annoyed when people rhapsodize about snow. Not if it's because they like winter sports, but if it's 'ooh, it looks so Christmassy!' I don't want to have what is for me like a prison sentence just so that things can look like the Christmas cards- which aren't even really seasonal in England anyway. Yes, I know IABU!

RampantIvy · 22/10/2023 14:19

I love walking in the rain

I don't. I have weather approproate clothing, but walking in sideways torrential rain like we had on Thursday is an ordeal. It doesn't help that wearing glasses means I can't see properly when it is raining.

TBH I don't understand the societal pressures that the posters on here feel about having to go out and do something in nicer weather. Just do you.

@cardibach and @Delatron and @LadyTrunchbull I agree with all of your points.

At the end of the day we get far more grey, gloom, damp weather in the UK than we do clear, dry weather. I'm sure no-one can argue with that, unless they live in one of these magical micrclimates where it is always too warm.

Although it is only 11 degrees here today. The sun is shining, I have washing on the line and I will be going for a walk later. If autumn was like this every day I would love it.

Yes exactly, we all all different.

Apparently walking in the rain is good for your immunity. According to Michael Mosely.

I don’t mind walking in the rain as long as it’s not windy as well.

RampantIvy · 22/10/2023 15:39

I don't mind walking in drizzly rain, but I wonder of the walking in the rain lovers get the kind of driving rain that we do.

florenceandthemac · 22/10/2023 15:44

I don't prefer one over the other, but I do love the change of seasons. I always find myself ready for the next season. I love light nights for what it enables us to do, but I welcome autumn and winter for what they bring; autumnal walks through the leaves in the crisp weather, being cosy in the house on a cold evening.
By spring though, I'm ready for the light mornings and evenings. Bike rides etc are still a possibility after work, for example.
I guess throughout winter we just make the most of being out and about in the day at weekends, as long as it isn't raining. We are an active family though and enjoy being out, I guess it's different if you're at home a lot and don't fancy being in the garden in the cold

RampantIvy · 22/10/2023 15:48

autumnal walks through the leaves in the crisp weather,

I shall be doing that as soon as I have drunk my cup of tea.

However, as has been pointed out many times on this thread - bright, crisp autumn days are very rare. The norm is damp and gloomy.
