To wonder if those who love winter have very robust mental health or very happy lives?

So I was thinking about this after reading a thread about weather. Lots of posters saying how they loved winter...some even said they love the dark evenings and what really surprised me was the poster who said they loved dark, cold mornings. I assumed everyone hated these!

Now I'm not in a terrible place mentally and I'm not depressed but I do find the dark, rainy, cold days do affect my mood. When the evenings are warm and light I feel so much happier.

I'm really interested in how others don't feel that the winter brings them down and actually enjoy it. Are they naturally happier, more positive type people?

I don’t think of September and October up to the clocks going back as “dark months”. And February is a short month and has Valentine’s Day in it so…..

I have a relative who lived in LA for some years. They got bored of the endless sunshine and missed the changing seasons.

For the last few weeks, doing anything after work entailed going out in the dark. And it's not light til gone 7am, for me that seems quite dark.

I like seasons though, it's the light that I think is worse, although I do find it hard when sunrise is about 4.30 in the summer.

RampantIvy · 21/10/2023 09:09

Our winter nights are longer in the North, so maybe posters saying that these aren't dark months live further south?

Oakbeam · 21/10/2023 09:20

Winter is 3 months. December, January, February

Ah, but the cold, damp misery starts long before that and often extends into May.

Primproperpenny · 21/10/2023 09:21

@RampantIvy - how far north are you talking? There’s a marginal difference sunrise/set wise from one end of the UK to the other but it’s hardly one hour of daylight in one and 23 hours of daylight in the other, is it?

@KimberleyClark In the U.K. we all know the dark months are much longer than 3!

Depending on where you are in the UK.

I'm surprised that the heat haters love to bundle up in thick clothes. I prefer to be able to move freely and not feel constrained by wearing several layers.

Who says we do? I run warm so summertime makes it worse. When I’m in the colder months where it is mostly rain in SE England and snow maybe once or twice and barely sticks for more than a few days, I wear a light jumper and a rain jacket, or a long coat with a light jumper and leggings or the long coat with a long sleeve top and a scarf. I haven’t worn heavy, thick layers since I lived in the States where it could be 6-12 inches of snow, high winds, and -17C and below.

RampantIvy · 21/10/2023 09:33

I know it is only minutes, but it feels longer.

Icopewhenihope · 21/10/2023 09:34

I loathe summer, it depresses me. I adore the dark evenings and mornings and revel in rainy, cold days. Everyone is different. Cannot wait for the clocks to go back.

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 09:42

Loathe summer? That’s a bit strong.

Why? Some people loathe Winter?

Why? Some people loathe Winter?

True, but their reasons for doing so seem more compelling.

To me.

hookiewookie29 · 21/10/2023 09:59

I don't do heat. Hate the sweaty, stickiness of Summer. The cold suits me.

Yes to you… you cannot speak for everyone. You have your own likes and preferences as I have mine. I am not a fan of summer. It brings me down. That is the way my brain is wired. Judging someone on their preference of seasons, whatever the reason might be is like judging them on Not liking opera music or preferring reading to watching movies. There is nothing compelling about people’s reasons for liking or disliking anything at all. People like what they like and that is in the makeup of who they are.
I am so used to people being aghast when I say I hate Summer as if there is something dreadfully wrong with me. Meanwhile I will be revelling in the dark evenings and enjoying every minute, same as they can enjoy the bright evenings and sunshine when it rolls around and I am miserable. The difference is, I would never judge anyone for loving Summer just because I don’t!

phoenixrosehere · 21/10/2023 10:10

From what most posters have said, I think it really comes down to if one dislikes being hot or cold more and how much sun they require, and not if one is an extrovert or an introvert.

funinthesun19 · 21/10/2023 10:26

One thing I don’t like about any season is the pressure to do always be doing stuff. In winter it’s no different because if you don’t go to a Christmas Wonderland thing and get the perfect Christmas picture then you’re obviously not doing winter properly.

I find it fascinating...I totally understand that we all like different things but for someone to say they like dark mornings and rain is like someone saying to me, oh I absolutely love it when I find mouldy food in fridge, oh I love it when I spill a pint of milk on the carpet, oh I just adore being dumped. It was so grey and rainy yesterday morning...made me feel incredibly low. In the afternoon the clouds cleared and we got blue sky and some sunshine. My mood instantly lifted. It was unbelievable how different I suddenly felt. Perhaps I am overly sensitive to this stuff.

I don’t feel any pressure to do anything in Winter. I love Christmas but hate Christmas wonderland stuff and I do Winter right.. for me. I enjoy it my own way.

I find it fascinating that you compare Winter to finding mouldy stuff in your fridge or being dumped, that is definitely being over sensitive.
Although in saying that when I open the curtains to glaring sunlight it instantly depresses me but not to that extent. I couldn’t compare the feeling to being dumped!

Oakbeam · 21/10/2023 10:34

I don’t mind either. I don’t like damp dullness, which is usually more prevalent in the colder months.

Disturbia81 · 21/10/2023 10:48

I think you need to just accept it as different preferences like anything in life. You can't compare it to mouldy food or being dumped as no-one likes those.
Compare it to liking egg when you don't or football when you like rugby. Just preferences.
Bright sunshine coming through my window makes me feel less happy than a dull grey clouds day/dark cool night. I have less energy. Just how it is.. I'm a positive person in myself all year round though. I do still like loads about summer! Life would be boring if we all loved the same things.. luckily humans are a mixed bunch.

notlucreziaborgia · 21/10/2023 11:22

Some people do seem to take this very personally, as if admitting to liking/preferring winter is on par with declaring a penchant for casual and/or professional mass murder.

I know! 😂 OP actually seems offended that people feel differently. Like it affects her? I don't care that many people love summer the most, let them be happy! I literally think as the days get warmer "It's their turn now".

Comedycook · 21/10/2023 11:47

I'm not offended...but irl I've never known anyone open the curtains, see it's raining and grey and found its boosted their mood.

minipie · 21/10/2023 11:57

Yes I think a lot of the winter love is thinking about crisp clear days, not relentless rain.

Just like the summer lovers are probably thinking of a lovely 27 degree day rather than 37 and can’t bear to move.
