About the Coleen Rooney documentary

chipsahoy1 · 19/10/2023 10:42

I’m fully prepared to be told IBU.

I just can’t get on board with this documentary. Parading about a premiere as if it wasn’t some tawdry affair that was splashed all over the newspapers.

AIBU? Can someone tell me if there’s a good reason why this documentary exists other than to further line the pockets of the Rooneys?

Why is lining someone’s pocket not a good reason for something to exist? That’s why most films and TV programmes are made - to make money.

Homefry · 03/11/2023 20:08

I'd love to know how much of the court case dollar RV has actually paid back!!

Homefry · 03/11/2023 20:08

Also love how RV refused to accept the final judgment.... after the exposure of all of the messages etc... amazing!

EverybodyJumpsuit · 03/11/2023 20:12

@Jewelspun ”Vain, wealthy attention seeking woman creates show for gormless plebeians to watch.

All over some tittle tattle in the media which she is part of when it suits her but can't stand anyone else profiting when they do it!”

well now this makes me want to watch it

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 03/11/2023 20:25

I have zero interest in football and WAGS. I only know who she is and nothing more. I remember thinking "that was pretty clever of her" when the story first broke, but I followed none of the Wagatha drama. I didn't even know there was a court case.

I watched it and I thought it was brilliant. She came across as a thoroughly decent person. She's had an interesting life and the way the tabloids operate made for an interesting story.

Dismissing her as vapid or whatever is sexist garbage. She's a devoted wife and mother who didn't seek fame. She just happened to be high-school sweethearts with a top athlete.

SweetFemaleAttitude · 03/11/2023 20:29

I thought she was fab after watching the documentary. Dead down to earth, not vain at all. Just a woman working hard to keep her family together in a sea of madness.

She seems to me like she would be the same person with or without money.

Very different when you have to mix in similar circles though. The true colours really come out.

Homefry · 03/11/2023 20:34

@SweetFemaleAttitude agree with this, also that Coleen comes from a sound and decent family who have passed those values on to her. Felt like we got to see the real her.

Dacadactyl · 03/11/2023 20:36

Why shouldn't she make some cash off the back of it?

Becky Vardy made herself look an absolute div. Ive heard Colleen say she wanted to settle out of court but Becky refused. Becky brought it ALL on herself and if Colleen wants to make some more money, why not?

It's not what I'd necessarily do, but I don't have an issue with it.

Is that you Rebecca?

🤣

LadyBird1973 · 03/11/2023 21:07

I thoroughly enjoyed this. It has all the elements of fab tv - an injustice put right and a clear 'baddie', who is handed their arse at the end Smile. RV is nasty - and there's something satisfying about seeing justice served.

CR does have the right of reply - Vardy shot her mouth off to anyone who would listen in the run up to this trial. Why should she get away with that, while Rooney (who was in the right) says nothing?

It was also useful to have a reminder of how appallingly the press conducted themselves back when CR was a kid - following her home from school etc. it's important we don't forget these things, which was something I was reminded of in the Beckhams documentary as well.

StillWantingADog · 03/11/2023 21:11

I didn’t love it but I think she came across well and probably wanted to get her point across before RV did.
she comes across as pretty grounded.
OTOH Wayne really didn’t have anything interesting to say at all.

stayathomegardener · 03/11/2023 21:19

I wonder if it will come to other channels, I'd love to watch.

Searchingforaname · 03/11/2023 21:21

I thought Colleen came across very well, down to earth, strong, a good mother and decent person.
RV though has always had a negative vibe about her I’ve noticed

TenderDandelions · 06/11/2023 14:27

I think there was definitely an element of CR having to get in there first with a documentary or RV would have done one herself. Better to get ahead of the narrative, and if it makes you some money in the meantime, even better.

I imagine CR won't get 100% of her legal costs back, despite it going her way.

Lovingitallnow · 06/11/2023 14:33

I think it's a bit like putting the heads of criminals on the city walls as a deterrent in medieval times. I imagine people will think twice before saying anything about the Rooneys personal life again. She's sent a very clear message. The incredible thing is (unlike RV) she's done it all without saying a negative word about RV.

TheKnittedCharacter · 06/11/2023 22:21

I really enjoyed this.

Coleen came across very well - measured, principled and a decent person. Even Wayne seemed OK.

Rebekah Vardy - what a cow!

StylishM · 06/11/2023 22:41

I loved this as a bit of easy TV, the final episode had DH and I absolutely flabbergasted! RV and her PA were absolute shits & got caught with their hands in the PR cookie jar. CR came across very well, friendly and approachable. She's been to a charity I'm involved with before (related to her sister) and she's warm and genuine

ToadOnTheHill · 06/11/2023 22:43

She can sell what she wants about her life, people are obviously willing to pay.

Nice she gets to control this story.

Nobody will give it a positive review because people look down on this sort of "entertainment" and nobody public wants to hold their hands up and say they loved it.

Wolvesart · 06/11/2023 22:48

AutumnCrow · 19/10/2023 11:28

Lucy Mangan not a fan - but she admits she hasn't seen the final part. Apparently the review critics were only given the first two? Which seems a bit daft ...

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/oct/18/coleen-rooney-the-real-wagatha-story-review-hour-after-hour-of-boredom

Normally I don’t rate her review skills but I’m quite swayed by what she says. The Beckhams docu was also dull

Womencanlift · 06/11/2023 23:00

I enjoyed it, like others I thought CR came across really well.

There was a dramatisation of the court case that used the actual transcripts on channel 4 last Christmas which was pretty awful, it was really dull. But then in the summer there was a play in the west end that did the exact same thing and it was brilliant. They used the transcripts so well and got the level of humour just right. If it ever comes out again either on tour or in London I would definitely recommend it

MotherOfVizslas · 06/11/2023 23:05

I enjoyed it, I really warmed to Coleen. She came across like such a down to earth, 'normal' person. Considering what RV did, Coleen remained remarkably cool headed throughout.
