To ask what Self medicating actually is

My neighbour smokes a lot of weed in the garden.

It means that my garden, where my children play, stinks every day.

I asked his partner if he could stop, and she said it was a weird thing to ask, where else would he smoke it.

I said I thought it was against the law to smoke it, and she said the police would just tell him to stop self medicating.

They've never mentioned an illness, he comes across as fit as a fiddle and full of the joys of spring, but obviously not all disabilities are visible, so this is where I stop understanding. I asked if he has a prescription for it then, and she said yes.

I heard that Scottish police indeed don't do anything at all, but we're in England. I'm not planning on calling the police, but I did want to ask what this self medicating idea could be all about.

If he has a prescription it's legal. It's relatively easy to get a prescription in England, not on the NHS but going privately. It's not that expensive, maybe 100 quid for a consultation to see if you're suitable, and then 80 quid or so a month on your supply.

People get it for all sorts of reasons, such as depression. If someone's had depression for a few years and tried multiple medications without much success, getting approved for a prescription is pretty much certain.
