To say she should have mentioned this ?

I am a qualified nail technician and visit houses. I am very clear that I will not visit houses with dogs as am petrified of them. I double checked with a lady who I was visiting for the first time and originally she had said no to having dogs. Now she comes back and says “There is a small dog but he stays outside and will not be in the house.” Her partner is a builder and has all his construction equipment outside so find this a bit odd and now am worried. Obviously I will pass the dog on the way in and out and am not comfortable with this.
Aibu to say that if you have a dog on your premises even if not in the house that you need to make others aware ? As I said, I will still have to go near it and being a stranger I am worried as to how it will react to me.

You could ask her to have it secured as you come in?
If you’re not happy, of course you don’t have to go. Just politely cancel.

IceAndLemonPlease · 17/10/2023 16:10

I’m surprised dogs are even allowed on a construction site also. If it’s raining they will want it inside surely.
I could do with the work and reviews but will have to give this some more thought I think.

If it’s their own business they can have dogs there and depending on the breed most dogs are fine in the rain. Ask for it to be secured and outside or choose not to go.

IhearyouClemFandango · 17/10/2023 16:30

What does the partner's occupation have to do with it? 🤔

Lavender14 · 17/10/2023 16:30

Just ask that she has the dog secured so you don't need to come into contact with it at any point. Could simply put the dog in a different room for the duration of your appointment. They might have an area outside where the dog can go safely away from the equipment. You won't really know until you get there all you can do is ask that they secure the dog out of the way prior to your arrival.

IceAndLemonPlease · 17/10/2023 18:01

She is saying that it will be outside the whole time but I can’t see that this would be the case if it were as I say raining. I question why you would say you didn’t have a dog if you have one on your premises but it just doesn’t come indoors. Seems weird. Was just surprised as well that there was a dog on a construction site as felt it would be dangerous

Maybe there's somewhere outside the house where the dog is happy to shelter if it rains?

Out of sheer curiosity, what do you do if you pass a dog in the street?

newnamethanks · 17/10/2023 18:17

Cancel her. Sorted.

ToadOnTheHill · 17/10/2023 18:18

It's probably in the back garden and the back room is locked as well?

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/10/2023 18:20

Why is it weird her husbands tools are outside. My dh were as well

If your told her your fears then one would hope the dog wouid be outside /back and not seen. If raining the guess will go into kitchen /not the room you are in

AmandaHoldensLips · 17/10/2023 18:27

Just send a polite message -

Unfortunately I am unable to provide my services on your premises as I cannot attend any location with a dog. Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience. Best wishes, Ice & Lemon.

Valid8me · 17/10/2023 18:30

So is it a construction site or a house? How do you know that the dog doesn't have a kennel/shelter outside?

Coffeerum · 17/10/2023 18:31

Her husband’s tools being outside doesn’t make it a construction site 😕

At the end if they day it’s your decision which clients got work with so you obviously don’t have to go, having the dog in the garden while you are there seems like a reasonable compromise though.

Because it won’t be anywhere near you? Their arrangements for their dog aren’t really your business or concern as long as it’s kept away from you during your appointment.

Arightoldcarryabag · 17/10/2023 18:36

Cancel, it's not worth the anxiety and stress.
It will be on your mind while working and there is potential for the dog to be present regardless of what they say.
Dog owners (And I include myself in this) will play down YOUR fears because their dog is oh so friendly. If you leave after doing half a job because the dog came in, you can guarantee they'd see it as a you issue rather than a them issue. You can tell this by the fact they lied about having a dog in the first place.

As much as I can't understand the fear of dogs, if a dog sized spider came at me, I'd be the first to leap out of a window so keep yourself safe from the anxiety and cancel due to the dog.

itsmyp4rty · 17/10/2023 18:36

Maybe it has a kennel and will be in the back garden so you won't even have to pass it.

This sounds like a huge thing for you that is really impacting your life, you should get some help for it because it must be miserable to have to live with that level of anxiety. You deserve better than that.

MariaLuna · 17/10/2023 18:44

Was bitten by a dog at age 2.

Get it.

Like a kid, you have to teach them.

FloweryName · 17/10/2023 18:56

Are you sure a job going to people’s houses is right for you if you’re scared of dogs? They’re a pretty popular pet.

I have a small dog and once someone came to read the gas meter but refused to come in if the dog wasn’t in another room because he was scared. My entire downstairs is open plan and I wasn’t prepared to shut my dog in a bedroom so he could scratch the doors while wondering wtf was going on. I offered to keep the dog held in my arms for the minute he needed to be in the house but that wasn’t good enough for this man.

I have no idea why someone who is scared of dogs would choose to do a job that involves going into peoples homes. It is rude and entitled to go into other people’s homes and start making demands about putting family pets away, especially when you’re there to provide a service.

Chiwahwah · 17/10/2023 18:59

I have 3 dogs. If someone visited that doenst like dogs I could easily make sure they came in zero contact. I have stair gates, crates and these crazy inventions that are huge pieces of wood that block the passageways between rooms 😝

IceAndLemonPlease · 17/10/2023 20:05

I don’t demand anything at all.
I even make a note of it on my profile that I am not a fan of dogs. My worry is that if the dog is outside then it will come running up seeing as I am a stranger. I have been bitten before and while I can walk alongside a dog on a lead, I couldn’t be around a dog which is unleashed. I have actually cancelled it now as don’t think the dog could be kept outdoors even if she claims it is an outdoor dog which won’t be in the house. Like I say, I wish she had mentioned it earlier.

Probably for the best that you canceled but you seem to have made some 'interesting' assumptions. Dogs can be outside in the rain, it may have a kennel or there's an undercover patio. Just because it's outside didn't mean you'll see it. It may be in a fenced backyard and you'll presumably come in through the front door. I can easily lock my dog away if we have guests/trade workers etc.

Dunnoburt · 17/10/2023 20:39

Yanbu OP, she should have mentioned it beforehand, sorry not everyone is taking your phobia seriously. It is probably best you have now cancelled.

One would assume the dog would be outside in back garden

Not front door

But it's up to you

You may lose customers /business never being near dogs

CountryCatLady · 17/10/2023 20:49

My parents have 2 dogs which live outside almost all year. In the garage in winter, snowy weather. If someone asked if there were dogs in the house her first response would be no. Because we don't have dogs in the house... she would possibly clarify later that we have outside dogs. Bit like when she sells second hand furniture, it is from a smoke free and pet free home, as none of the pets are indoors...
