People dancing at concerts and blocking the view - annoying

Yes we all want to do it, well most of us do, I do, but hopefully we are mindful that some want to remain sitting but still want a view of the band they've paid to see, and make sure that we're not being selfish about it.

I was at a concert recently and a woman two rows in front of us was doing this. She stood up and started dancing like that woman on the Tales of the Unexpected intro, waving her arms around to the very first song and whoop whooping. She didn't block our view, but I could see others behind her were pissed off.

A man behind her eventually tapped her on the shoulder and pointed behind him (to people who couldn't see) and to the aisles where people were dancing. We heard him say they've also paid fifty quid, same as you, and are entitled to a view. She didn't move, but did sit down. Then got up again five minutes later and did the same thing for the rest of the evening. I saw people filming her. The man and his partner then got up and moved to the aisles and started dancing themselves.

I don't really know how it can be stopped, but it's annoying. The friend I was with said that in future she doesn't want to have any tickets in the circle or stalls for this reason, she'd rather be on a balcony with an unimpeded view, sit still and see whoever we'd come to see without people dancing in front.

At any concert I've been to, in addition to the tickets saying people may stand, the artist themselves say 'I wanna see you up on your feet'......
My daughter is 5ft and has never complained about people standing. She stands, dances and enjoys herself!

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 17/10/2023 11:01

On the plus side Pet Shop Boys we’re the warm up act.

I'm amazed that they aren't top of the bill, at this stage in their long, illustrious career.

I'd have much preferred them to the main act!

Yabu, it's a concert. Same goes for singing along.

Ok some concerts people do sit - at Peter Gabriel people stayed seated for all but a couple of songs and not much singing along but that's the exception. If possible I book standing tickets

I was about to say, the only recent concert I've been to where people stayed sitting was Peter Gabriel!

Blur was a bit of a mix but I would never expect people to stay seated for most gigs.

Wonkasworld · 17/10/2023 11:06

This would have been an issue at Gloria Estefan's Get on your feet concert!

I went to that!

You’re there to have fun, enjoy yourself and stop moaning about everyone else! Join in and dance too, the atmosphere would be so much better! It’s much nicer to see people singing, dancing and enjoying themselves at concerts than glued to their phones and filming it, now that’s annoying! If you want to moan, moan about them idiots, as they’re the ones in the way!

SkyFullofStars1975 · 17/10/2023 11:15

Whatever sort of freakish concert do people go to where you don't dance.....

Graciebobcat · 17/10/2023 11:16

Sitting down at pop concerts is odd to me, but yes it does happen sometimes.

At classical concerts I have to restrain myself from foot tapping and so on as I am rhythmically enslaved. If I hear music anywhere I might randomly start jigging or tapping my feet.

Graciebobcat · 17/10/2023 11:17

It would be quite hard for Song 2!

Utterbunkum · 17/10/2023 11:20

As some PPS have said, I am short. I don't expect to see. At all-standing concerts, I am always at the back because I don't like the crush in the middle of the front. When you are short and slightly built, it's claustrophobic and unnerving. But it's a MUSIC concert. I only really need to HEAR. For those saying they might as well be at home listening to the record, please sell me your sound system and the record if it produces live venue quality sound.
I have not paid whatever amount of money because I want to watch people playing instruments. I have paid that amount of money because I want the atmosphere of sharing a sound I love with others. I don't feel I miss out because I can't see. I accept that I can't see because I am small and other people aren't.

sHREDDIES19 · 17/10/2023 11:21

Surely if you want to dance you stand down in the pit (for the big concert venues)? I don't understand people who buy a seated ticket then constantly get up. Just get in the appropriate section.

It hardly a story it's factual and I don't need to give my reasons for preferring people not to stand.

margotrose · 17/10/2023 11:24

What! Disabled seating has people in front

Then take it up with the venue 🤷‍♀️

Edited

fine, but don't equate my 'boring' to you being in a wheelchair. it was in reference to the other nonsense you were stating.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 17/10/2023 10:21

I've only ever been able to book seated. Very few concerts have had standing areas and those are usually tiny compared to the seating areas

We all pay a lot to go and enjoy it. And that includes standing up and dancing.

If they had to eject everyone standing at most of these concerts then they'd have to eject most of the audience.

nope, it is very clear in the places i go: seated tickets are for seated people. If people stand up and the ones behind complain, and they don't sit down, stewards will take them out.

If nobody complains, nobody gets chucked out.

And people talking? i find a very loud "we all paid 50 quid for this STFU" usually works

ShutItYouSlag · 17/10/2023 11:31

OP, you’ve not been to a Status Quo concert then? 🎸🎸 😁

To be honest, my understanding of a ‘concert’ concerning pop or rock groups is that there would be dancing and singing along… as a pp said, a lot of groups and artists will encourage you to join in singing!
Im only just 5ft, but I go to concerts for the music and atmosphere as well as ‘seeing’ the group.
Most venues don’t like you dancing in the aisles as it’s a fire escape route, but most folk dance by their seat, and going back 30 years, that was also the case.
As regards people waving a bloody phone round, recording it… Now that is rude and annoying!

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 17/10/2023 11:37

@ShutItYouSlag thankfully no I haven't!

😂😂😂

My thoughts exactly! Bloody Status Quo? 😂😂😂 no thanks

Mikimoto · 17/10/2023 11:44

If there are seats, they're for sitting on. What about those people who've paid for them because they actually NEED to sit?

If there's a standing area, dance away.

OakTree16 · 17/10/2023 11:46

Yabu. The people behind us at blink 182 the other night were miserable about us standing up and dancing. It’s a concert. I find the people who remain seated weirder.

Myotherdogsanoodle · 17/10/2023 11:49

If the artists want their audience to stand and dance they shouldn’t book into a (fully) seated venue, is my opinion.

margotrose · 17/10/2023 11:51

If you need to sit then the onus is on you to make sure you buy appropriate seats or choose an appropriate venue.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 17/10/2023 12:01

Again

The majority of tickets to a major venue will be alongside a seat. That doesn't mean people will spend the whole time seated though. There just isn't enough room to not have seats.

If its inappropriate to the show (so something classical, semi classical etc) then standing people may be asked to seat for causing a nuisance. But at Pop/rock etc shows then people will have had to book a seated ticket but will also stand...

Yalta · 17/10/2023 12:16

Can I ask what view you are expecting and £50 for a ticket🤣🤣🤣

I have only ever seen tickets for that price where the view of the band is usually some speck in the distance and you rely on the big screens to actually see

The ones I have been to, as soon as the music starts everyone stands up.

One thing going to see Les Mis in a west end theatre where you don’t stand, dance or sing along (who wants to pay £120 to hear some out of tune audience members singing the songs and dancing’s in the aisles) another seeing One Direction at the O2 where everyone gets up as soon as the music starts

RubyBoozeDay · 17/10/2023 12:44

I went to see an Abba tribute band (don't knock it, they were good) and the singers asked people to 'dance in their seats' or dance in the aisles if they wanted to stand. This was in a relatively small venue though.

I took my niece to see 1D back in the day, and I saw nothing of the band, nor heard any of the songs because of the singing, screaming and general mayhem from their very young fans. The big screens worked well. My niece thoroughly enjoyed every minute, it was a real lovely experience for her. She promptly went off 1D when Zayn left so that was the one and only time we saw them.
