To feel like I never want to stay in a hotel again

Just back from what was meant to be a relaxing break in a hotel. We had a loud wedding that went on until the small hours, with wedding guests taking over the lounge the next day; a baby that screamed and cried throughout breakfast while both parents sat there and neither bothered to take him out; and the lounge on the Friday night had a match playing at full volume and was full of non residents drinking and shouting and roaring at the screen.

The last time we took a break in a hotel there was a large conference being held there. They were seated at two long tables in the dining room and the noise was so loud that ourselves and several other tables complained but nothing was done. We also had to put up with loud work related skype calls and phone conversations in the lounge when trying to relax with the morning papers, and an impromptu meeting being held at a table beside us, with more and more people joining in until we felt squeezed out.

We've also had weekends in hotels ruined by loud hen and stag parties.

AIBU to think it's nearly impossible to get a relaxing calm break in a hotel anymore?

I'm seeing plenty of decent hotels that price in Ireland. Various dates. The first is a weekend, the second not but it's December in Dublin City centre 🤷🏽‍♀️. Only did a 2 min search so I bet there's more deals to be had

think you need to look up Dublin City centre again. portmarnick gold course is approx one hours drive to st spetphens Green and the Hudson Bay is in athlone not Dublin!about a 2 hour drive to St Stephens Green

I'm currently lying on a bed in a Premier Inn watching TV with a nice coffee, having just filled myself to the brim with a delicious breakfast after a lovely nights sleep.
Not all hotels are awful 😃

Yes, I've stayed in many premier inns over the years and never had the problems descriped in the OP's post. I clearly can't afford to stay in the hotels with weddings and conferences!

MattDamon · 16/10/2023 13:42

I spent a birthday in a city centre 5-star hotel as a treat. Cost a fortune. Didn't get a wink of sleep due to the Johns coming and going and all the sex noises coming through the walls. Hotel was full so they couldn't even move me to quieter room.

I prefer well-reviewed Airbnbs now.

if you want 4 or 5 Star near st Stephens Green for that weekend the Merrion Sherbourne and Westbury all around 500e for 2 nights

theduchessofspork · 16/10/2023 13:45

I always stay in little hotels on holiday, so you can ask the owner direct. I just like them but it avoids this stuff.

Complain and see if you can get a voucher out of it.

jeaux90 · 16/10/2023 13:48

Never stay in hotels big enough for weddings OP. Small boutique hotels are always your best bet for quiet.

SausageAndEggSandwich · 16/10/2023 13:49

Once paid for an extremely expensive hotel in Goa as a treat at the end of a holiday. Over the weekend we had a lovely time, only come Monday it was filled with people on a work conference. The men jumped into the pools fully dressed (?!) and started splashing and wrestling and generally turned it into an unpleasant atmosphere if you were in your bathers on a sunlounger.

The staff were useless and me and DH retreated to the gym and got room service that night.

On the other hand Premier Inn have always been decent and where available I book Village hotels now because I like the gym and pool.

@Wexone i stayed in a large hotel in Leopardstown last weekend for €110 per night for a twin room and bed and breakfast. It can be done.

I can never find them prices. I travel for work they pay but has to be claimed back so have to pay it myslef 1st. needed to be in lucan there a few weeks ago. Clayton at liffey valley wanted 210 for a Monday night 😱 ended up getting a citywest hotel at 180e that was cheapest. I look most months. wouldn't do leopordstown that time as try to avoid m50 traffic

GrimGrinningGhosts · 16/10/2023 13:52

I stayed in a very expensive hotel suite last week for my birthday and was rudely woken at 8.30am by someone tearing a car around outside my window.
I grabbed a coffee and went out to watch. In fairness it was a trackside room at Silverstone 😂

oohsharon · 16/10/2023 13:56

@Wexone I was replying to your earlier post in which you said "250 pounds for 2 nights ?? you wouldn't get that hear in Ireland for that pice that be one night for a 4 star here. maybe mid week or low season."

A brief 2 minute search showed that you can indeed get 4 star for £250 for 2 nights.

You've now narrowed it to the most popular tourist area of Dublin 😅🤣. Well, as my post shows, even in peak Christmas shopping season, Christmas markets and work Christmas celebrations, fairly late booking, you certainly can stay in that area for less than the OP paid.

Emmalin · 16/10/2023 13:57

Regardless of the type of hotel if you book one you want to be able to sleep. Hotels may not have to do much but a night's sleep is a basic requirement. If you wanted to stay awake all night you could sit on a chair in a station for free.

I'd request a refund on that basis OP. Hopefully if you ask for a full refund they'll at least knock some money off. Sorry you had a shit expensive couple of nights.

That sounds awful! We went to a Eurocamps this summer in Rome and loved it. We are looking at maybe Sanguli or Cambrils the next time. It's not one of those is it?

We go to Sanguli or Cambrils most years and I'd be doubtful if it was one of those places, it's just not that caliber of guest.

Cambrils is much quieter though, Sanguli can be quite busy but it's probably better for older children as the slides are bigger and being so close to the beach is a plus.

This year however we had a last minute holiday and stayed at a splash type hotel in Spain and I was wondering if this was the same place as I could quite imagine it! Those AI places tend to attract the type!

oohsharon · 16/10/2023 14:03

Leopardstown - Friday to Sunday - last minute booking 🤷🏽‍♀️🤣

There's bloody loads of them. Every search bringing up prices in Ireland just like what the OP paid!

To feel like I never want to stay in a hotel again
Redbrickrebel · 16/10/2023 14:04

Hotels are totally luck of the draw..a big enough hotel will always have a conference or a wedding on...they just don't cater to quiet couples, that's not where the money is.

if you know them areas you will know that there is not much on them places (not knockkng them now)so not really peak time for them. Xmas markets are not a huge thing here. tend to be more local craft fairs people drive too. Xmas party nights -my Xmas party hotel charging 180e at reduced rate. I guarantee if you looked for a nice 4 star hotel with a good rating spas and walking distance to things to do it will cost you about 250e. was also pointing out you siad Dublin City centre and them hotels are not Dublin City centre at the slightest. foto island fir week of Xmas break is 225 a night. anything around bord gais or the 3 arena is alos around 250 a night.

Mothership4two · 16/10/2023 14:05

Can't remember ever having this kind of thing happening at hotels we have stayed at. A couple of hotels have told me that there was a wedding on when I was booking and so we declined and either postponed or went somewhere else.

FrankieStein403 · 16/10/2023 14:08

Thirded premier inns for uk, consistent, comfortable no frills, decent breakfasts - use these when I'm paying and occasionally on business if I'm on my own.

Have had some worse stays in 4/5 star - one of worst ever, that I paid for, was the 5* in Gibraltar a decade or two ago.

oohsharon · 16/10/2023 14:14

"think you need to look up Dublin City centre again. portmarnick gold course is approx one hours drive to st spetphens Green and the Hudson Bay is in athlone not Dublin!about a 2 hour drive to St Stephens Green"

The hotel above the Athlone one is the one I was referring to. It's The Green 🤣 and took us 10 mins to walk to the lovely Christmas markets at Dublin Castle. Also did plenty of Christmas shopping and celebrating.

You said in "Ireland". Only changing it to a couple of streets in Dublin once it became clear there are plenty.

The OP didn't say she was staying in a city centre, or near an arena or anything like that. Yet certain posters are just desperate to make her feel that it can't have been that nice because "bloody hell, that's cheap". Rubbish. Loads of 4 star hotels in Ireland and in Dublin at those prices

CasperGutman · 16/10/2023 14:15

You don't have to spend a fortune, just avoid the kinds of hotels that cater for large groups like weddings and conferences. Small country house places are great, but somewhere like a Premier Inn or Travelodge is also mostly immune from this kind of en masse entitled behaviour.

Baffled1989 · 16/10/2023 14:19

@GrimGrinningGhosts LOLz

RockGirl · 16/10/2023 15:00

You've never known noise until you stay in a hotel in India that is hosting a wedding.

I was on a business trip and had to get up at 630am. The wedding was still going on when I left!

ginasevern · 16/10/2023 15:01

@Betsyhilton

Hotels are catering more than ever before to weddings and conferences. It is honestly where the money is. I don't agree that country house type hotels are any better. They are the ones that people are far more likely to choose for a wedding! Not too many people pick a Premier Inn for their wedding. I'm afraid "regular" guests are marginalised in favour of big events. Just read Tripadvisor, it is one of the biggest complaints in "posh" hotels with wedding guests boogying until the early hours and generally taking the place over. Also hotels post Covid/Brexit are often running on minimal staff so the ones they do still have are run off their feet trying dealing with the wedding/conference which are given priority which affects the overall standard of service.

samupnorth · 16/10/2023 15:02

You get what you pay for sorry OP.

LadyEloise1 · 16/10/2023 15:07

Please, please name these cheap 5 star hotels as I live in Ireland and haven't seen anything as reasonable as the prices you've listed.
It would be great to know of them.

We stayed at a small country hotel in Spain last month, only to find on check in that they had a wedding going on from 9pm to 6am.

They had given us rooms at the back of the hotel and we didn’t hear a thing.
