Is using a LOT of toilet paper a sign something is really wrong with your gut health? How much do you use?

Not a poo troll, just at a loss as to where I can ask this. Can't imagine asking my friends. Have googled and somewhat alarmed to see that "on average" people use 6 - 8 sheets per visit to the loo, and that a number two takes an average person 3 wipes to be clean?

I thought my gut was healthy as no stomach issues, pain or anything else, regular habits etc. Things go out of whack before my period but assumed that was normal with the hormones.

But erm I use way more toilet paper for a number two? As in 15 - 20 sheets. I do have some OCD traits (as mentioned by NHS doctor not me, but not enough for an OCD diagnosis) so wonder if this is partly to do with it. But I definitely would not be properly clean at all with 3 wipes.

Is this a massive red flag my digestive system is actually sick and out of whack - that I must have "silent" food intolerances or an illness?

I have a lot of cancer in my family, including bowel cancer, and am just worried now my gut is damaged and I haven't been aware and should get a colonoscopy or something.

I do think 3 good wipes should be enough,.so maybe 9 to 15 squares as each go needs 3 to 4 sheets. It's meant to be a pretty clean break anyway surely? Look at the poo leaflet online and see if yours look right ✅️

My son has OCD (main concerns are germaphobia and toilet based) at his worst he uses 2 rolls of toilet roll per poo and takes 3 hours to complete the toilet routine he has. It rules his life and at times is horrific! When he isn’t at his worst, it’s still about half a roll and 30-40minutes. Those times are before the shower that follows the toilet and the routine that involves. It’s heartbreaking and why people really need to be careful when they say things like ‘oh that’s making my OCD kick in’ when talking about liking something clean etc
So, in our experience, using a lot of toilet roll is certainly a ‘symptom’ of OCD but alongside all the other things he does too. Ds has an OCD diagnosis as well as Autism.
I also use far more than what you have researched as normal. DH uses about 3 sheets and it blew my mind when I found that out.

Thats actually so sad your poor son. I assume you can't really make many plans or go many places due to this. It must be debilitating. What if you're out and he needs to go? I can't imagine that. Nothing to add really but this is one of the saddest things I've read on here. Sending best wishes and I hope it's something he can recover from in the future (if that's possible with OCD I have limited knowledge sorry)

One to scrape
One to clean
One to polish

This is magnificent! 🤣🤣🤣

Fifireee · 14/10/2023 20:32

I hardly use any. It just comes out and no residue. Is that bad?

MassageForLife · 14/10/2023 20:33

"The Glasgow stool chart will tell you if your poo is normal or not"

There's no way Glasgow would have a stool chart. They would have a jobby chart!

They have stools in Bristol though 😉

I use two sheets per wipe, folded into thirds. But then I wipe, fold that over again, wipe again, and if possible I fold it a third time (on a good run). So I can use two sheets for three wipes!

Yuck! Your hands must be very near shit. I think part of the job of loo roll is to keep it away from your hands. 2 sheets folded, used, re-folded and re-used is disgusting. 6 sheets used once, new lot of six sheets and a final new lot of 6 sheets- nothing anywhere near hands. And I always wash my hands very thoroughly! I'd have to disinfect them if I did what you do- loo roll absorbs! Yuck.

hotcandle · 14/10/2023 20:34

We use baby wipes in this house but wrap them in a nappy bag and dispose of them in the bathroom bin.

It means 2 baby wipes are used opposed to several sheets of toilet roll.

bookwormcrazy · 14/10/2023 20:36

Oh goodness! I am definitely not a 3 sheet person! Or even a 6 sheet person unless it's a very clean exit!

I definitely use more, need to protect my hands!

Or maybe your shit is just messier than heyitsthistle's. Mine varies a lot, and the amount of toilet roll I use varies a lot as a result. Sometimes I would almost get away without using any - maybe they are like that.

weirdgrossbodies · 14/10/2023 20:39

The Glasgow stool chart will tell you if your poo is normal or not.

Yeah this is what I thought. But according to what I've read there's not meant to be residue.

I guess I'm wondering if your gut feels generally ok and things look ok according to the chart, does it not matter if you need quite a lot of toilet paper then.

@kitsuneghost Of course! But why risk it! 😅

Spookymormonhelldream · 14/10/2023 20:43

1-2 wipes, 3 sheets per wipe. If it's still not clean then it's because I have a dodgy bum tbh. Appreciate everyone is different but if you need a shower after a poo then I'd consider your diet.

johnd2 · 14/10/2023 20:45

Depends if you're talking super fluxed quilted sofaed mattress sheets paper or that tracing paper that they used to have (as a joke?) in some places. Or even the standard office dispenser type.
The expensive stuff you only need one sheet at a time rather then two folded in half so it's very economical.
Anyway the trick for me is just wipe until clean.

Does no one else ever have a one wiper?? Not always but not unual for me to have no residue. I eat a lot of fibre

MajesticWhine · 14/10/2023 20:48

I use loads. Absolutely loads and have never counted sheets.

weirdgrossbodies · 14/10/2023 20:49

But what does diet have to do with it if it is definitely not diarrhoea, and you are not constipated?

If everything feels ok in your abdomen - what are the diet improvements that could fix things?

Not all the time, but yes, reasonably regularly.

Occasionally then other times I could wipe a dozen times. Usually just use baby wipes now and wrap in nappy sack when finished.

Yes, we do because people like the OP want to know these sorts of things.

Go away if you have nothing constructive to say.
