To think I messed up at work

I recently started a new job. Very corporate a lot to learn and a completely new environment. I think I’ve got to grips with the new job quite well. I enjoy it, I’ve been praised for my work.

Anyway I recently applied to take holiday, I was approved by the manager but did not know I had to let another two managers know I would be away.

I found this out a day before holiday was due to start. I let one of the managers know that I was off, she said she will have to get cover. However both managers have been off, to my knowledge no cover has been sorted and I feel so anxious that I’ve messed this up. I’m considering cancelling my holiday. I don’t know quite what to do

If you didn’t know, it’s not your fault. Unless you’re a doctor (or medical adjacent) no one will die because you take a couple of weeks off with no cover.

Go on your holiday, and now you know for next time.

If no one told you how were you supposed to know? Whoever manages you failed, not you.

Set an out of office reply so anyone who emails you knows you are away. You had agreement from your manager, did they tell you to agree it with anyone else?
Yes - Oh dear you messed up
No - Enjoy your holiday
If I had no plans other than to take it easy I might call in on Monday to check things out. Maybe.

They will get temp cover in, they won’t do my job but will be there. I am still in my probation so I’m weary about doing anything wrong. Honestly I feel like I will worrying about this the whole time I’m off

I think I will call in on Monday. So there are three people who needed to know. 1 approved it, 2 I told in person, she made a note to get cover and then 3 I did not tell. She’s not a manager but oversees my work if that makes sense .

Everywhere I have worked staff get either a piece of paper or an Email from their manager (or HR) saying holiday is approved. If you have that stop worrying. Your manager never thought to let the other managers know either.

I log in holiday online, it goes to my managers requests. She then approved the full holiday so I thought that was it. Probably best to call Monday and relax.

It is management’s responsibility to get cover. The fact that they didn’t manage to do so is not your problem. Your holiday was approved and that is all you need to know. Unless you have it outlined in your annual leave policy that you need to inform every staff member AND provide cover, you have done nothing wrong. You obviously can’t inform someone who is off on leave themselves so if there is a policy (which I doubt) you are still in the clear.
