To think if you're being undertook, you might be driving wrong.

NC for unpopular opinion.

I don't undertake on the motorway, for a disclaimer. But I do drive long distance on a smart motorway where there are 4 open lanes. I find it insanely frustrating the amount of people who do not move to the left. I understand it's hard when there are no hard shoulders but as I don't undertake, I fully go round people in overtaking and get back into the left lane, as we are meant to.

A colleague does a similar route and instead of my problems, he constantly complains about people repeatedly undertaking him. He says it always happens.

AIBU to think that, while undertaking is dangerous and not my way of driving, if you are ALWAYS being undertaken, to the point you rant about it always happening in your workplace... maybe you are the problem and are sitting middle lane??

Surely, if a person can physically undertake you, you aren't using the lanes appropriately?

I live in an area with no 4 lane motorways and I have to say that on the rare occasion I end up driving on them, all the rules seem to go out of the window. Sometimes you need to be in certain lanes for an upcoming junction, sometimes not, sometimes it's very congested and you think you might never get over to where you need to be or everything is just creeping along at 40 anyway.

I can see why people just pick a lane and stick to it, which tends to happen a lot less on 3 lane motorways.

Agree. I hate going in the fast lane so I do sometimes resort to undertaking cars. I do usually drive alongside them, occasionally glaring, having flashed my lights at them first.

This is poor driving. And potentially dangerous. Because another poor driver is sitting in say, the middle lane, it is not an excuse to undertake. Nor is ‘hating the fast lane’ 🤨

You should overtake in the correct way.

Erivo · 15/10/2023 11:52

The integrity of the lanes is completely lost on a smart motorway when the appropriate lane for slower vehicles is no longer a static lane but one that requires vehicles without the advantage of speed to be the vehicles continuously having to change lanes. This results in slower vehicles remaining in the second lane and the first lane an undertaking separate slip road and generally a free for all. I drive occasionally a speed limited vehicle and often find myself being overtaking on both sides. Worse is the car on the left pulling infront as their lane is ending. So not only am I in a vehicle without the speed to avoid I’m having to brake heavily in a vehicle without great braking distance.

Are you from Kent?

Why do people write stuff like this on Mumsnet about very generic subjects?!

"My boss is mean and patronising to me." "Is his name Steve?"

"In a coffee shop near me people spend all day nursing one drink over their laptop." "Are you in Northern Ireland, OP?"

"People drive badly on the motorway." "Are you from Kent?"

Kent? People drive badly everywhere, @TooDrunkToDust .

@NerrSnerr

2 lanes of slow moving traffic and a clear left hand lane would fit the description. And slow would be anyone going under the national speed limit.

Brilliant! So 69mph is slow? Tell it to the judge!

My cross country trip yesterday was not fun. 6 hours on motorways. Middle lane hoggers at most points of the journey.

My biggest frustration about this is a 4 lane motorway that is mostly reduced to a duel carriageway, as the hoggers in lane 3 only leave people options to overtake in lane 4.

At those points I stayed in lane 1 at my continuous speed. Had a few glares from the hoggers for undertaking. Mostly women drivers doing the hogging.

Why aren't these drivers posting on this thread?! Defend your actions!

Just to join in the pedantry, all motorways are dual carriageways regardless of how many lanes they have. A 4 lane motorway can be reduced to 2 lanes. The divide between the Northbound/southbound (or whatever compass orientation) traffic is what defines a dual carriageway.

You sound like an incredibly dangerous driver.

Please explain how driving at the correct speed, in the correct lane, is 'incredibly dangerous' driving.

If you are being undertaken, then you are in the wrong lane.
You are in the overtaking lane, despite not being in the process of overtaking. You should not be there. You are preventing the system from working as it is intended to work.

You are the 'incredibly dangerous' driver.

Tara336 · 20/10/2023 06:26

I regularly drive on motorways, yesterday there were signs on the gantry saying keep left unless overtaking and further along don't hog the middle lane. I'm pretty sure either some drivers can't read or don't believe the signs apply to them as the amount of cars driving down the middle lane with the left hand lane next to them empty was ridiculous

Yes! I was on the m5 and saw these. I thought "thank god, they will all move over now". Did. They. Fuck.

If you're not confident enough to use the overtaking lane then get off the motorway before you cause an accident

Maybe the person in charge of the signs is a MN user!

They picked up the story from MN like the Sun often do 🤣

tabulaisrasa · 20/10/2023 12:10

I don't bother going around people if I am in the left lane and doing 70mph, and they're pottering in the middle lane obliviously. I drive past on their left because they are the arseholes who can't drive, not me! I cannot stand incompetent motorway drivers. Just MOVE OVER!

Exactly. Move over into the correct lane like you should, and stop telling others they're driving dangerously when it's YOU Gifgirl!

The morons continuing in the middle lane when they could safely and easily move into the left hand lane are also clearly not confident, or incompetent, and should "get off the motorway" too!

You shouldn't be using the motorway if you aren't prepared to use all the lanes properly.
