Can I actually do this?

I’ve never really pushed myself in work, never really had that much confidence in myself, took supporting roles but often found myself bored and frustrated. So a month or so ago, I took a punt and applied for a more snr job. Never thought I’d get it but turns out a did. 3 stage interview and somehow I got it.

it’s a 20k pay rise. Like that’s crazy. I start in a few weeks and im getting a pretty serious case of imposter syndrome. Am I just a class a blagger? Am I being so foolish to accept the role, who do I think I am? I’m worried I can’t rise to the occasion and I’ll mess up

Voted YABU because you can do this.

fuck imposter syndrome. You made it through a 3 stage interview.

if you still happen to be the wrong person for the job after that it shows that the people interviewing you don’t know the job themselves.

Unicornnohorn · 13/10/2023 23:00

Thank you! I just keep thinking what if I don’t pass my probation because I’m too stupid or not good enough, then I’ll have left a stable job to take a chance on myself when I might not be worth it

They obviously saw something in you.

I get the imposter syndrome, I still have it a year in and still waiting for someone to call me out!

congratulations!

redastherose · 13/10/2023 23:05

Imposter syndrome is the one major reason for women not pushing themselves forward in roles they can do. How many mediocre men have you come across in senior roles, there are loads of them out there and they never think they are anything other than fabulous! You'll smash this.

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/10/2023 23:05

They have put you through a rigorous process and clearly feel you are the best one for the job. If you need to fake/project confidence, do it - over time it won’t be fake as your actual confidence will grow - that’s what I did anyway and it’s served me well. You can do this.

HoHoHoliday · 13/10/2023 23:05

You wrote a winning application and got through three stages of interview? Yes, you can absolutely do it. Not only can you do it, but you'll be brilliant at it! Accept the offer, take a breath, go in with your head held high and embrace the new challenge that you are clearly in need of and are more than capable of. Have faith in yourself.
And more than anything, enjoy that £20K pay rise!!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 13/10/2023 23:12

Here’s my official grumpy face 😠 Don’t be ridiculous you got the job, you know you’re bored with your previous roles, and you know you worked hard to earn this new job. Knock it off and get in there and do the job.

Here’s my not grumpy face 😁. Well Done! Enjoy your success and stop listening to the doubts. Get in there and prove everyone right!

That is so so true, there are so many men who are just crap at their jobs yet some how have very highly paid positions and I always end up scratching my head as to why

Congratulations

Dowhadiddydiddydum · 13/10/2023 23:15

Do you know what most people in senior roles aren’t anything special. Ok some have specialist skills or are very good at management. Most are just like everyone else..but are confident, manage stress well and just go for promotions.

etmoietmoietmoi · 13/10/2023 23:20

You got through a 3-stager because you're highly competent and even if you can't see it yourself yet, the interviewers certainly did. Congratulations and enjoy your new role.

Absolutely this with bells on.

Riverlee · 13/10/2023 23:20

If they didn’t think you could do it,?they wouldn’t employ you. Congratulations!

CherryMaDeara · 13/10/2023 23:22

If you passed a 3 stage interview you can deffo do it.

Amen!

Spoiler alert… On any given day I have:

  • faced something new
  • pulled something out of my ass to save the day
  • screwed up something/gotten something wrong
  • learned something
  • forgotten something
  • Thought “wait… I’m in charge of this?!”
  • achieved something
  • and probably more things than I am remembering at this moment

My motto is “I’ll figure it out or they’ll fire me” I haven’t been fired yet so there we are 😂

Circumferences · 13/10/2023 23:24

Of course you can do it. Fuck your social conditioning that has told you you're not good enough!

saz85 · 13/10/2023 23:26

I was on an interesting course a while ago and this really helps me when I'm feeling 'impostery'!
Interesting research, but basically if you feel like you are an imposter, you can't be!

Can I actually do this?
Mapleunicorn · 13/10/2023 23:31

You were bored in your previous role, clear sign you were ready for a more challenging one! And the more senior you get the more random the pay jumps can be. I have always struggled with imposter syndrome but always, always ended up being told I’m doing a brilliant job. Go smash it and enjoy your well deserved pay rise!

Snoopey · 13/10/2023 23:34

Well done OP. You can do it. All the best.

StarlightLime · 13/10/2023 23:38

You'll be absolutely fine, op. Truly.

Curiosity101 · 13/10/2023 23:39

Fake it till you make it.

Or in this case, fake your confidence until you find your feet and really do feel confident. Also accept that it will presumably be a big learning curve so it's perfectly reasonable that you won't be able to do everything perfectly from Day 1. But that's how we grow and learn.

Congratulations OP and good luck!

Frazzledatfifty · 13/10/2023 23:42

Well done you!!!! You wouldn’t have got through the interviews and been offered the job if you couldn’t do it! Give yourself a bit of time to settle into your new role - your employer will expect that… Enjoy it - you will have worked very hard to get to where you are - be proud of yourself 😊

Squiggles23 · 13/10/2023 23:42

Good luck OP!!

Go for it!! The worst that can happen is that it’s not the job for you and the experience will look ace on your CV. They know your experience going into the job so hopefully they will support you and give you the training & help you need.

You were probably underpaid before so really the huge pay rise is just levelling out 😉

Moonwatcher1234 · 13/10/2023 23:43

You can do it. Assume you’re a woman as impostor syndrome is absolutely real. But it means that you try harder always and be the best that you can - warning though - don’t let the drive to push imposter syndrome away lead you to burn out. You are good enough as you are. Good luck.

Rosebyanothername19 · 13/10/2023 23:45

If it was a 3 stage interview and they picked you over the others then you 100% deserve the job.
Just do your best and try not to let the importer syndrome get on top if you!
You are enough!
Good luck!!!
X

Another vote for this. I think the further up you go, the more you find that nobody actually knows what they are doing. Or at least, the ones who do are in the minority.

What they (hopefully) good at doing is making decisions. If the decision is wrong, they make another to correct it.

You got through the interview. Take a deep breath and go for it. I've also found that the people who really know what they are doing are often the quietest. Look for them, they will help you. Remember to share the credit when they do and you'll be fine.
