If you live in a multicultural area, what's the mood like at the moment?

If you have a good diverse cultural mix in your town/city etc how is the mood at the moment? Is it still business as usual or has there been any change?

I live in a multicultural town in the north and as far as I am aware it's business as usual. I've not been out and about much today, too rainy, but the local newspaper is only reporting on local car crashes / motorway closures and a five foot deep puddle on a nearby moor 🤷🏻‍♀️ so nothing to report here that I can see 😊

I live in the South East and very multicultural and very much BAU

SisterMichaelsHabit · 13/10/2023 21:13

What's your opinion OP? 🧐

HairyKitty · 13/10/2023 21:14

Hmm I imagine the answer to this would depend on whether someone was Muslim/Jewish or neither of these.

Would we have any idea whatsoever if there was an increase for these people in blatant insults or even extra staring, standing in peoples way, pushing in, other micro aggressions? I think anyone not directly affected would be oblivious and think it feels like business as usual.

Username82y · 13/10/2023 21:14

My opinion is its business as usual here. Its nice to hear it's BAU round the country because the press would have you believe otherwise.

I live in a very multicultural area, high Muslim population and all is going on as usual. Not a mention in the school I work in.

AmandaHoldensLips · 13/10/2023 21:16

I live in a very multi-cultural area and if anything everyone is being extra respectful and friendly towards each other as though we are all very mindful of the atrocities playing out.

NE London, social media is at high tensions but on the streets there’s no signs, disagreement or protests around.

MojoMoon · 13/10/2023 21:19

It's really wet and windy in this multi cultural part of London so I'd say it was quieter than normal on the streets as it's pretty unpleasant out right now.

But as I said on another thread, I walked through Stamford Hill in Hackney today (with a large Orthodox Jewish population) and beyond seeing a police car sitting outside a row of shops, there wasn't much to note and the schools and shops were open and lots of Orthodox Jews walking around.

That's not to say there isn't more security in place at Jewish schools/synagogues but it isn't some sort of war zone or riot out there either.

Not to minimise that it might be scary for some/many Jews in London right now which is very sad but also the media is whipping up some fears of brown Muslims all running riot in British cities and that isn't happening.

Work in a very diverse job (I’m not from here either) and it’s normal.

Moonbowlspoon · 13/10/2023 22:11

I live in a large multicultural city and it’s business as usual as far as I can see. There was a vigil for Israel in the city centre the other night, which I passed on my way home from work. Heavy police presence but felt orderly and peaceful. Other than that, nothing else.

zeddybrek · 13/10/2023 22:11

I'm Muslim and in a multicultural area in London not too far from a Jewish area. Business as usual.

AffIt · 13/10/2023 22:13

I live in the south side of Glasgow, which interestingly has both a large Jewish (mostly Ashkenazi) and Muslim (mostly Bengali) population, running to three/four generations.

All seems BaU, but I am neither Jewish nor Muslim so can only say what I see. There may be further nuance.

ManyMaybes · 13/10/2023 22:20

It seems strange to me to assume it would be anything different than normal really. Nobody here has anything to do with what’s going on.

Really?! Many have family & friends over in Israel, fewer in Gaza as the population is much smaller. The Met police have reported a significant rise in antisemitic incidents, not to say that these were perpetrated by Muslims - some use any excuse to be racist.

tunainatin · 13/10/2023 23:13

All fine here, someone took the Israeli flag off the town hall and replaced it with the Palestinian flag, which was a bit controversial but I seem to live in a left wing echo chamber here so everyone's been getting on just as well as usual (including Jews and Muslims).

BethDuttonsTwin · 13/10/2023 23:54

I'm in London. All as normal except noticeably increased police presence today.

WhateverMate · 13/10/2023 23:57

London here and business as usual.

My dad lives in an area with a very large Muslim community and it's BAU there too.

'Multicultural' here = large Muslim population.
Business as usual. It's getting colder. People want food and warmth.
Nobody has any headspace to get riled up over these things enough to parade around and demonstrate when we're struggling to keep warm and feed ourselves.
