To think we should avoid London right now?

Due to visit London in the next few weeks.

Anxious with Palestinian protests and so forth in the news. I don’t want to be near that with young children, and worried that it may escalate to some sort of attack.

We are not Jews, but presuming as the U.K. is supporting Israel that we’ll all be fair game ie there might be an attack/bomb somewhere prominent to send a message to gov.

Have been in London during terrorist attacks before and I’d rather avoid.

AIBU to consider rescheduling our family trip to next year?

@BlurredEdges You can stand up for the right of the Palestinians, call Israel out on their war crimes and the amount of international laws they’re breaking without being pro Hamas

You seem to be responding to a different post from the one I posted, and answering questions I didn't ask while ignoring the questions I did ask.

This is a thread about London. I'm a Londoner. I'm also a Jew. I asked if you think I and my children, who are Jewish, would have felt able to visit the national gallery today, roughly where that picture was taken.

DiamondsInThe · 14/10/2023 20:18

Jewish people also attended this protest, asking for the atrocities towards Palestinians to stop, so you had nothing but your own narrative to be afraid of

Because it is a settler colony. Historically the land belongs to Palestine, there are Jewish Palestinians, Christian Palestinians and Muslims too. The west wanted to expel the Jewish community so they chose to give them Palestine. They did not have the right to just take over a country. I understand that Jewish people may or have a homeland but they were welcomed and embraced to live side by side by Palestinians and they did for many years before they started expelling Palestinians in the Nakba of 1948.

The people of 'Israel' are not ethnically from the land. The tiny strip of land does not belong to them and now Palestinians do not have a home. Just because majority are muslim doesn't mean muslim countries see them as the same as their citizens. Same way other muslim middle eastern refugees are not welcomed into muslim countries with open arms. You can't expel citizens from their homeland and commit atrocious crimes for 75 years + and expect them to be happy.

Please do some research before posting such blasé comments.

Yes, even Jeremy C**n had his little, tiny, very unrepresentative group of Jews from a very fringe sect, which he used as a fig leaf to try and fail to disguise his hatred of Jews.

It didn't work then and it doesn't work now either.

@seafish this is a thread about London.

anon666 · 14/10/2023 20:38

We were there today. No protests even in Trafalgar Square. I expected it, but it was calm.

DiamondsInThe · 14/10/2023 20:39

Why does it matter what sect they are from, and why are you bringing up politics. I thought you just said this was a thread about London and you asked a question which I’ve answered. The men in the picture very clearly are Jewish based on their attire. Your concern and question was if you and your daughters would be safe. And I can categorically say yes you would have been considering the men in the image look very Jewish and we’re perfectly fine in a crowd of others supporting Palestine.

Please don’t encourage fear that the Palestinian supporters are some violent animals out to get everyone.

seafish · 14/10/2023 20:41

@BlurredEdges apologies my reply is in response to @Grapefruitsquash who I forgot to mention.

They stated:

"Israel is a tiny strip of land a similar size to the Isle of Wight. It's the only Jewish state in the world. Why can't these people allow it to exist?"

Im sure Palestinians would be happy for them co exist as they did for many years but not my taking their homeland and treating them like second class citizens.

I'm Jewish. This is my home. I was born here.

Do you think it would have been OK for me to go to the national gallery today? I'm a member and wanted to see some of the temporary exhibitions before they finish.

The pic below is of the march that went from broadcasting House to downing St via trafalgar Square. Do you think I'd be OK taking my (jewish) children through that?

I don’t wish to belittle your fear, however, I was at the protest today. There were a number of visibly Jewish people, who were cheered and treated like any other human there today. This was a pro-Palestine demo rather than an anti-Jewish one. There were people there of every faith and ethnicity.

Hamas' charter specifically calls for the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews. At pro-Palestinian marches they chant "From the river to sea". That means destruction of Israel.

Mydogmybestfriend · 14/10/2023 20:45

Even if you were Jewish you can come to London with no fear. Stop reading the news

StayorgoLDN · 13/10/2023 09:37

We arrived into London in the midst of an attack before and were almost caught up in a bomb, except we had a last min change of plan, so that’s very vivid for me.

Wanted to ask Londoners on here what their perceptions are of how things are on the ground - obviously due to experience my opinion would be biased, and the media can distort/offer narrow view.

Think we might change the accom as quite near the embassy.

That is going to radically alter your perception of the risk. I think it's very much a what are you comfortable with thing.

sqirrelfriends · 14/10/2023 20:50

Will you enjoy it if you’re anxious? If not then I suggest postponing.

@seafish this is a thread about London.

Seafish doesnt say where she lives
She says that he has experienced racism as a Muslim this week.
I have seen a Muslim woman pushed on the tube this week-just for being Muslim it was awful. I am not saying that it happened because of this weeks events- maybe the male who did it and abused her always does that to Muslim women on the tube.

I live in Central London. I saw the march many times and at different stages today. There were certainly a small number of Jewish people there. It was a massive march- by far the biggest post covid. It took an hour to go past and there were lots of people in the side streets. If you were 1 street away (I was in Carnaby Street as it went down Regent Street at 1 point) you wouldn't even have known its as happening. There were lots of families including children/babies and it was very very multigenerational.

I didnt see any trouble at all (I am not saying that there wasn't any).
It is very quiet now.

Malvasylvestris · 14/10/2023 21:01

I was at the demo the whole way today, many many thousands of people, saw several Jewish people waving placards, speaking to the media etc, definitely not a fringe element. It made me feel very emotional as it can take a lot of guts, empathy and self awareness to go against what a lot of your own community feel.

I was close to where the flares were being let off but at no point was the atmosphere anything other than positive.

I understand the anxiety of the Jewish people but I really hope they can understand that our issue is with the governments of the world and if anyone uses this as a cover for anti-Semitism then they are ignorant and hate filled and shame on them.

Short answer, so far no evidence that London is unsafe.

ErcolSofa · 14/10/2023 21:05

I also saw a green flare being let off in Regent Street, It wasn't disconcerting in anyway.

justasmalltownmum · 14/10/2023 21:06

Everything is normal. Trains even running on time.

Malvasylvestris · 14/10/2023 21:07

We also popped into the National Gallery on the way back to use the toilets (!) It was just like going in on any other day.

HeraMum · 14/10/2023 21:12

I was there today in Piccadilly whilst the rallies took place- no -threatening, busy though. A couple of fireworks went off

bobbitybobbitybob · 14/10/2023 21:16

Just been to the theatre, protest going on in Piccadilly when we went through, but fairly low key - just lots of shouting and flags, a few fireworks, and then it had moved to trafalgar square when we came out - loads of police, like 100's in the background but didn't feel unsafe at all

Are you Jewish? That was kind of key to my question.

Sorry, I posted this in response to your post about the Nat Gallery, before I saw you actually went on this demo and are pretending that the tiny minority of extremists in Neturei Karta are representative of the Jewish people of this country. What a joke. Don't bother answering my previous question as it won't be answered in good faith. Glad you were able to enjoy the National Gallery, shame my family can't.

There are always a lot of police in London. 17 came to a call in our flats a few weeks ago- 4 cars and a minibus.
There cant be that many as they are not parked on our road! (its is the overspill road for the police minibuses)

Those are the same five Jews in all the pictures being used to 'prove' that this wasn't an anti-Jewish demonstration. They are a well known fringe sect who hate Israel and provide a convenient fig-leaf for virulent antisemitism. They were very handy for Jeremy fking Cn as well.

The reality, from a jewish person living in a Jewish community, is that we are all fucking terrified, destroyed and shaken. We are in bits.

Almost all of us have lost personal friends and family, and still have loved ones missing.

Almost all of us have seen Jewish women, children, babies and elderly people massacred, raped, tortured and kidnapped, and this being CELEBRATED on the streets of our own cities.

These pictures were taken in Berlin, today. They are marking Jewish homes with Magen Davids. I'm glad my grandparents aren't alive to see this.

And yes, you are belittling my fear, my experience, and the same fears and experiences shared by almost all of the Jewish people in the UK and around the world. Those Jews in your pictures are as representative of most Jews as Westboro Baptist Church are of all Christians.

And we've seen this week in the most appalling detail what that means. Things I will never, ever get out of my head.

I don't know any Jews, other than the (frankly) fucking weird five blokes who turn up at all these things, who aren't grieving, traumatised and shocked - most of us for specific individuals who have been murdered or disappeared - and almost all of us for the realisation that there will be people in the streets of our home towns who will cheer and call it a moment for celebration when they see these things happening.

I'm in fucking bits and I know this is how 99% of the Jews in this country feel too.
