To stay up - early flight

We have an early flight at the weekend, one of the first to leave the airport. Short haul holiday and can just relax when we get there at lunchtime ish.

Recently I’ve been suffering from insomnia and nearly every night this week I’ve been up until 1/2am. Ok but annoying.

We have to set our alarm for latest 2am, so we can be at the airport early. I’m wondering if there’s even any point in going to bed and trying to sleep.

If I resign myself to staying up I can probably deal with it, but if I try to sleep and lie awake tossing and turning I’ll feel stressed

What would you do?

I’d go and have a lie down but would try not to worry about whether I slept or not and just use it as a rest. I’m a shift worker though, so it’s quite easy for me to lie down for various lengths of time and various points and not really expect to sleep.

Try to get a few hours sleep I would.

I have often found myself in just this situation. I stay up. It's much easier all round. I feel relaxed when we set off because I haven't been tossing and turning and worrying about falling asleep at the last minute and oversleeping. Go for it!

I'd probably make myself very comfy on the sofa with an audio book and set an alarm. I never sleep well if I have to be up at an odd time especially for something like a flight.

I'd stay up and set an alarm in case I dozed off.

Thank you! Did it ruin the first day of your holiday or were you surprisingly ok?

I was fine! I usually doze during the journey and just relax once arrived.

Doggymummar · 12/10/2023 22:31

I would go to bed about 8pm take a sleep aid and set alarm fro when in need to get up. Which is what I shall be doing when I need to be at Gatwick at 5am in a couple of weeks. 7 hours sleep is plenty for me.

Essie274 · 12/10/2023 22:32

I'd stay up - if I ever have to wake up pre 4am, then I always do. Setting an alarm for pre 4am freaks me out for some reason and I never have any kind of restful sleep, just lots of stress. I tend to stay up doing completely impractical silly things, like baking or starting a DIY project that I don't have time to finish - you know, the most logical things to do before going on holiday.

This.

If you go to bed then you will probably be very conscious of the fact that you should be sleeping and might get wound up and stressed that you are not.

However if you are just relaxing on the sofa in a quiet room, no pressure, you might be able to at least doze a bit.

Haha! I get your drift. We sound similar

Yes, that’s the problem! When I’m aware that it’s taking me a while I get more and more stressed about it which in turn keeps me up longer. This is good advice so thank you
