Charity Shop Lady closed Fitting Room directly as I was stepping in.

Hi,

The volunteer of a huge charity shop walked up to the fitting room entrance the same as me, looked at me, and went in and closed the curtain "in my face". I tried telling her that I was out by 2 seconds and would be quick etc but she was adamant it was no. I was so annoyed! It's a pain to take items home and return.

I bought them all (£40) and went to another store next door, tried them on there, and then returned for a refund on half.

This way, she wasted her time running items through till, doing a refund and having to put all items back.

AIBU to be pissed off at the poor customer service and actually, rudeness for being so strict on rules?

I know there was at least 30 mins to shop closing but no sign on fitting room opening and closing times.

Why be a dick to other people for no reason just to make their evening more stressful?

Charity no, of course I wouldn't but I've got years and years of retail and customer service experience. Agree with Tram some volunteers take 'rules' very, very seriously and are frightened of using their initiative in case they get into trouble.

It's probably the only bit of power she's ever had, let her have it.

Hang on you went to another shop and used their fitting room to try on goods that you didn't buy from them potentially stopping their own customers using it, please tell me you got their permission to do that and that you bought something from them as a thank you for being able to do something they didn't have to let you do or did you just sneak in there and do it without permission

Dowhadiddydiddydum · 13/10/2023 08:55

I’m sure I’ll get flamed for this but…..charity shops often have a range of staff with various abilities and needs and backgrounds. Many volunteer in charity shops out of sheer kindness, but many others because of various reasons such as disability making employed roles difficult to get etc. I know years ago when my dad volunteered at oxfam they had people doing community service there.

My point is - I think expectations of staff in charity shop is not the same as in commercial shops. I’d just accept it and try to understand that maybe there is a reason behind the rude behaviour I am not aware of.

Are you feeling OK? Why the outrage? Relax. Multiple. Rooms. Tried on their bits too. Noone was harmed or put out. Calm down.

That was really rude and out of order.

She's a volunteer, giving away her own time
There's a clear sign about the times of the changing room

The constant "I'd just be 2 minutes" expecting everyone else to wait around must get boring, and it happens in every shop.

Why shouldn't she be strict on rule? You are not paying her over-time, why do you feel so entitled?

rasellagirl · 13/10/2023 13:09

The volunteer sounds like she needed to just be treated with a little kindness.

@CharityShopHorde WOW what an answer. Seems that you are happy to call other people rude but when your own actions are questioned you get rather nasty - says it all really

IwinUlose · 13/10/2023 14:43

They all say they'll be 2 seconds.

I didn't see it as entitled. She made her decision which I abided by. It was just a little irrational as it ended up taking her More Time and requiring More Effort.

I have volunteered in a charity shop and worked in retail previously. I have empathy.

No, I am not paying her overtime. True.

You were making up a scenario based on a fantasy to have a go at me, and express faux outrage. You've suggested I've put out another shop, should have paid to use their fitting room (what?!?) which is just... nonsense. How would be standing in an empty fitting room for 5 mins put any other customers out? You need to ascertain facts before having a go at people.

@CharityShopHorde Stop trying to justify your actions by trying to insult me. Who said you should have paid the shop? but you obviously you didn't have the courtesy to ask them if they minded if you tried on another shops garments while you were using their fitting room, otherwise you would have said so in your replies to me, you say you worked in retail would you have said no to a polite request from a customer asking to do the same? Instead it seems that you just thought you had every right to do so and I am sorry I disagree with you and no amount of insults or rudeness from you will make me change my mind about that.
