To worry about getting covid and flu jab on the same day?

I had this last year and felt off for a day but otherwise ok, same as ds who is 17 but has health issues.
This year now had lots of people in RL saying they wouldn't do that, that it's potentially dangerous. Anyone have any insight?

They won't do them both in the same arm on the same day
My dad had to rebook as he can only have one arm injected

Absolutely not true. Vaccinator here and it's absolutely fine to do both in the same arm (unless it's contra indicated in the vaccine SPCs), it's just given 1-2cm apart into the deltoid.

poetryandwine · 11/10/2023 11:50

I am a STEM academic. I don’t pretend to medical expertise. I have the highest respect for evidence based decisions. Anecdote is not the same, nevertheless….

As I am CV I had both jabs and also the pneumonia vaccine almost two weeks ago. Within hours my temperature rose to 39.5 and stayed there for several says. It took over a week to return to normal. I had all the other symptoms of flu but Out of Hours, my GP and I think it was vaccine related because the arm with the double injection (flu and pneumonia) was very hot, red, painful and swollen. It is still warm, red and sore and I am still tired. The arm with the Covid jab is fine.

Because of getting the vaccines together there is no way to untangle this.

fire2023 · 11/10/2023 12:03

@MrsFinkelstein wow, I didn't know that
They refused to do my dads in the same arm (he had a reason he couldn't have his left arm injected) and he had to come back a week later
I asked for both done in one arm (same county, different site) and they also refused Confused

MrsFinkelstein · 11/10/2023 12:04

@poetryandwine those are very common vaccine side effects, I tell everyone I give a vaccine to they may happen.

MrsFinkelstein · 11/10/2023 12:05

@fire2023 that's a shame, it's pretty normal practice to do it. Some vaccines can't be given in the same arm, but flu & covid are absolutely fine.

VisionsOfSplendour · 11/10/2023 12:11

If you're not dead from COVID yet, you're not going to die from it

If that were true @inquisitiveinga then there would never be another COVID death so clearly you're spouting nonsense for those few words alone never mind the rest of it

Tiredalwaystired · 11/10/2023 12:32

inquisitiveinga · 11/10/2023 08:46

Don't bother with the COVID jab - you'll still stand every chance of catching it, you can still transmit it and the risk of severe heart problems, blood clots and/or worse is significantly higher than the risk of death from COVID.

WHY DONT PEOPLE DO THEIR RESEARCH? Oh yes I forgot, because all we need to do is listen to the BBC and sky news because they're definitely right, not lying to us and aren't in any way funded and/or inextricably linked to huge pharmaceutical companies.

I know you'll all call me a "conspiracy theorist" but just look at the effing state of the country. These are not conspiracies, they are facts. The amount of rubbish that we get drip fed on the daily from mainstream media is absolutely insane.

If you're not dead from COVID yet, you're not going to die from it. Get the flu jab by all means (I'm not an anti vaxxer before the name calling begins and my child has been vaccinated against all childhood diseases etc). I just decide to look into things with a bit more depth as I feel it's necessary to do so given the awful state we are in as a nation.

Can I listen to the highly specialist virologists that I work with every day?

Because they recommend taking it.

poetryandwine · 11/10/2023 12:38

I wish I knew which one caused it, @MrsFinkelstein . I feel bad enough that I might think twice about repeating it. Hopefully it was the pneumonia jab.

poetryandwine · 11/10/2023 12:38

PS Thank you!

Can I ask why you had MMR booster? I've never had MMR. I has mumps as a child and the Rubella vaccine but not measles. Wondering if I should get it. I'm late 40s!

You definitely can get MMR at any age if you’ve missed out. Really important to do it. Your GP surgery can do it, make an appointment with the nurse!

These are normal vaccine side effects!

Far more than most people would get, but well within the bounds of normal.

poetryandwine · 11/10/2023 13:59

I’ve never had a reaction to flu or covid jabs before, @theduchessofspork and @MrsFinkelstein . The reaction may be normal, but an extended fever of 39.5 with flu symptoms and a rather gross painful arm keeping you off work for a week is surely to be avoided if that can be done easily. Even if it was safe.

The question no one has answered is, how likely it is that the reaction was caused by getting multiple jabs together?

Irridescantshimmmer · 11/10/2023 14:22

I had both jabs together and just had a slightly elevated blood glucose (T1D) not caused by the jabs haha)) and slightly feverish for a few hours and still felt ok.

I will have both together again in the fiture.

TheGoogleMum · 11/10/2023 14:37

Nhs routinely does both on same day for staff, I don't think it's dangerous

SunflowersAndSmellyTrainers · 11/10/2023 15:28

I had my 5th Covid jab Yesterday and feel as rough as anything today!

I've opted to space out my flu jab so will have that at some point in the future week or 2 I think.

Highly unlikely.

The sore arm is more likely caused by poor injection technique unfortunately.

The temperature is within the expected range of post vaccine side effects.

KnickerlessParsons · 11/10/2023 17:03

Changing the subject - do we still have to carry round our little record cards showing what vax we had and when?

BIWI · 11/10/2023 17:30

@KnickerlessParsons DH had his Covid jab a week or so ago, and they're not giving out those cards any more.

poetryandwine · 11/10/2023 18:09

Thank you, @MrsFinkelstein As you are so helpful, my last question is, what causes the hot, red, egg shaped lump? It only started going down on the third day.

Tellmeallthestories · 11/10/2023 18:12

I had both of mine at the same time last week. Felt fine.

ThinWomansBrain · 11/10/2023 18:14

I had both a couple of weeks ago (on the same day)
Fine for the first 24 hours, then one arm (not sure, but I think the covid one) was a bit achey if I held it up above shoulder height for a couple of days, and I felt a bit fluey for a couple of days - but I could easily have had that with either or both of them if I'd had them separately.

ilovesooty · 11/10/2023 18:16

One in each arm. No reaction whatsoever.

Had mine today and got a little card! I think they are left over from the beginning though as it has space for your follow up jab🤷‍♀️

Had both, one in each arm. Feeling a little sore but nothing else.

sparklefresh · 11/10/2023 18:29

I did this. Absolutely fine - didn't have a sore arm, nothing.

KittenKins · 12/10/2023 01:55

I had mine together & I was fine. I also qualify for Covid treatment because of my health.
