The Cuts to local Radio

Don't think I've seen anything on here about the cuts to local radio.

Nobody explained it very well or asked anyones opinions on presenters.

Local radio stations have lost some of their favourite presenters and the best ones without any consultation Or explanation.

Local radio is important. Some local.presenters are fantastic with their audiences and people get used to hearing them in the daytime. They provide a good local service too.

Now I believe they want to merge some stations so you'll get traffic news out of your area etc?

Those at the top never care, or explain their decisions. Think they've got it wrong and are out of touch.

Does anyone know if the BBC are trying to destroy local radio altogether.

They've certainly made alot of people unhappy recently.

Local radio was also a lifeline and a comfort to people during Covid.

It's terrible. So much brilliant and informative local programming being lost. I listen to the radio station from my home town just to hear the accents, but it's clearly a valuable service, especially for the elderly.

Yet the BBC continue to spend money on the abomination that is Mrs Browns Boys, and keep Steve Wright on the payroll (he must have some dirt on someone as he has not been funny since before the internet was invented).

Local radio is something the BBC should treasure, especially as many people now do not get or read a local newspaper.

Agree.

There may not have been anything on here, but BBC radio presenters went on strike a number of times a few months ago in protest.
During the strikes the BBC drafted in whoever they could get to cover the programmes. The standards obviously fell as the lack of local knowledge (pronunciation of place names being one example) was obvious.

We have already seen temporary mergers of BBC news regions on tv during Covid and strikes. We usually watch West Midlands news but were merged with East Midlands - an area which is of little interest to us.

I agree that local radio provides a valuable service especially to those who don't use social media. I mostly listen to our local BBC radio station and consider myself to be very well informed about what is happening in my County.

I know this. Was saying nobody discussed it on here as far as I know.

YANBU at all. I've always listened to local radio, from growing up in a rural area then moving to a different part of the countryside later in life. I don't think London-based BBC execs have a proper understanding of how important local radio can be in rural areas, especially parts of the country that don't feature highly in the national news. Or that there can be significant differences between two adjacent counties, or that people don't always want another station that feels just like the local commercial channels.
