Weird smell

For context, we live in a HA home and all is usually quiet/there are no notable problems down our road.

However, in the last week there has been an awful smell down our road. Like something rotting. I'm not sure how best to describe it as I've never smelled anything like it, but it has been gradually getting worse.

So, who I can I mention this to? HA or Environmental Health? It is worse by one particular garden (which faces onto the road), but I don't want to point fingers when I don't know for sure.

Any insight would be appreciated because it really is becoming a problem!

I would contact HA if it’s becoming a problem and if it’s coming from a property. They may be able to investigate/contact Environmental Health if needed

Or if you type in on google ‘nuisance smell’ and then your local council it should direct you to a page where you can report it

I've watched too many murder shows. Because my first thought is 'Dead body'

My first thought is roadkill that crawled off to die. Hopefully not somebody's pet. The other thought is a mains gas leak as they can smell awful.

Contact your local council.

I think report to the council if you’re unsure exactly where it’s coming from. They should be able to find the source of it and take appropriate action.

Yes, report it. My daughter lived in a flat and a smell got stronger and stronger from the flat below. Tried to knock at the flat. No answer. Bluebottles at the window. Eventually called the police I think, and they knew as soon as they got to the gate that there was a body in there, and called for reinforcements (not a crime, just an old chap that had died several days earlier) All very distressing for everyone concerned obviously, relatives thanked my daughter for sending up the flare. Lots of people live alone now, and die alone, and if someone is not in and out every day, I don't think it takes that long for things to deteriorate. Hope this helps. Knock, and if there is no answer, then escalate.
