New neighbour ring doorbell

Not sure if I'm being UR regarding my new neighbours ring doorbell.

I live in a small European city where it's mostly apartment living, for context we live in a very quiet residential area, very little noise, crime, anything really.

New neighbour has moved into our apartment building (building has a security intercom system) and has installed a video recording ring doorbell on her door. However ours is the only apartment that needs to directly walk past it to access our home. It lights up blue that it's filming us every time we walk by. We can only access our door by walking past the ring doorbell, so it's essentially recording our every coming and going. Obviously we have nothing to hide but AIBU to feel uncomfortable at ONLY my families every move being recorded? I don't know why I feel uncomfortable but it just gives me a weird feeling.

I understand your point of view Op but please consider your neighbour probably cares less about you than you do about this camera. They aren't watching you.

we have ring door bells and also other cameras which cover our property as well as motion sensor security lights because one night when my husband was working away I was at home alone with 3 children when my home was broken into. It took me months to be able to close my eyes at night again when he was away and this security including my doorbell cameras helped me feel safe and feel that my children were safe. Consider this as well as all the other reasons that someone may want to secure there home, and also effectively yours. It's not just so they can spy.

Just wait until you order a parcel that says it's delivered to your doorstep and you get home and it's not there. You'll be knocking next door to ask to see the recording and suddenly you'll be grateful. Or (and I hope this never happens) one night you may be lying in bed and hear someone entering your home. The neighbours camera will surely deter an intruder to your property as well.

Why don't you just get your own camera and point it at their door?

We have a ring camera and have very carefully set it up to only record when people actually come up the drive to our property. Not when people walk past on the pavement or when vehicles drive past. It is also angled specifically not to overlook the neighbours on that side. Mainly because we want to avoid any issues from any neighbours or frequent passers by.

I think it's odd for your neighbours to have installed a video doorbell like this inside the property, especially one that records on movement. If it's so they can see who is there before opening their door then it doesn't need to be motion activated. It just needs to activate when someone actually rings their doorbell. I think you're reasonable to be annoyed by it. But I'm not sure what action you can take to get them to change it.

Under GDPR in Ireland we are not supposed to have a camera that videos the street. Your own driveway is fine.
The biggest alarm company in the country wouldn't fit one for me because of that- even though there is a driveway 🙄
But it's a grey area because if there has been a serious crime committed in the area the police ask for any footage people might have.

Just ask them to turn the camera off unless someone pushes it.

I'd find that horribly intrusive.

Our NDN has got one that they positioned on their gate, and it was also covering our drive, pathway and our front door. I asked them to change the position of it as we didn't consent to constantly being filmed. Didn't go down very well but they did move it.

Most are only activated to film if you ring the doorbell or leave/enter the property. They don't just keep on filming AFAIK.

This is how my camera operates.
