Dental crown loose spiralling into panic please help! So scared of dentist

Trying to stay calm but rapidly getting more upset.

I was flossing, and the crown on my molar suddenly felt like it shifted when I was getting the string out (my teeth are packed very closely together) and I honestly started to feel really sick and shaky. I find flossing very difficult for exactly this reason - a fear I will wrench out my fucking teeth and always talked myself down ie that's nonsense it won't happen dentists reassuring me my teeth are firmly stuck in.

But now I feel I have fucked up my crowned tooth and it's going to suddenly fall out and cause unbearable fucking pain and I am terrified! What the fuck why would this happen it is 3 years old??

Google says most likely cause is the root canal underneath has failed and the whole thing is fucked and will need to come out?

I can't bear this I honestly can't, I'm really fragile at the moment as bereaved and have a whole host of scary health problems of my own and I am TERRIFIED of the dentist after bad childhood experiences left in agonising pain and I am so scared.

Can't stop crying at the thought of having to go for emergency dentist appointment and procedures and the whole week being a blur of misery and pain and terror I really cannot. Please help me what can I do to get through this???

No advice about the crown but for flossing I was advised to pull it out length wise rather than pulling it back down between the teeth. I find it easier as I’ve had that panic of feeling sticking

@Sezza57325 Adrenaline is a great pain killer in general - but if you're already high on fear it's not always helpful. I reckon I could probably go back to it now because I've managed to detangle my complex fears from the physical realities of dental visits, but it's taken me ten years to get here. And I'm not one for upsetting the apple cart!

ive had the odd crown come off. I just put it into a little plastic pillbox and the dentist sticks it back In. Very straightforward.

Ask for non adrenaline injections. I can't tell you how much they have changed my life at the dentist. I too hate the dentist and didn't manage to go by myself till I was in my thirties. It wasn't until I was in my late thirties and had a nasty reaction to my injections (also for a crown incidentally) that my then dentist suggested we could go non-adrenaline. And it changed everything. The panic stopped, the racing heart beats, the hyper ventilation, basically I was so high in my own adrenaline that having the injections was sending me in to overdose every time, and this one time I collapsed in the waiting room in my way out. But the non adrenaline ones, oh my god, I still hate going, but now I can tell the difference between painful and unpleasant, actual sensations not metal fear and gymnastics. It's turned everything around,I can't recommend it enough.

Using adrenaline means you can use the smallest dose of anaesthesia because it stops it being whooped away by the blood vessels. Also if it’s a procedure which might cause bleeding (extraction or implant for example) the adrenaline minimises the bleeding. It’s not an accident or for fun, it’s widely accepted that it’s best practice for MOST people.

Ah yes, it is not very accurate because I was a sedated patient.
Unlike any unsedated treatement I have no recollection of the process of injection.

That’s not why it exists in local anaesthetic. Endogenous adrenaline will help you out if a Shark has bitten your leg off. The very tiny dose in LA is absolutely not intended to do that.

I have crowns on several teeth and they occasionally fall off. The dentist should be able to just glue it back on in seconds. With the interdental brushes (tepe brushes) they come in different sizes (colours). Ask your dentist to advise you which ones you need and ask them to demonstrate how to use them. They may give you a few complimentary to see how you get on with them. With the flossing, try to pull out lengthways from the bottom of the teeth rather than pulling it out to the top. Try not to worry a crown coming off does not necessarily mean you have lost the tooth or need a root canal filling. They often just come lose with time. I had some of mine for years now. Good Luck and hope you get an appointment for this week.

@Silverdogblue maybe I shouldn't try it again then? It gave me really bad reactions every time and made me collapse eventually. I just never knew why till the dentist talked it over with me after that final time. But if the dosage is small and shouldn't usually cause problems, does that mean I am genuinely sensitive to it? Are there other things in dental LA that could cause similar issues?

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 08/10/2023 22:28

@Silverdogblue thanks for explaining how it actual works btw!

Pushpull · 08/10/2023 22:31

I understand this because I'm really scared as well..I probably wouldn't floss till I saw the dentist (what difference will a couple of days make really) but I'd use mouth wash.

The thing is when you're scared it all feels worse case doesn't it and Google (I know you know this) is only going to give you worse case because people don't post the everyday fix they had to their crown!

Hopefully they can splodge it back on (as my dentist said last time this happened to me)

@NowItsSpring How do you fit the interdental brushes in between your teeth though? I look at them and don't understand how they fit.

I literally have no spaces between my teeth so have to push the floss in quite forcefully and same to get it out.

Interdental brushes come in lots of sizes. I use fine ones and they will go in between my teeth at gum level whereas I really struggled to get floss between my teeth from the top. Hope that makes sense.
