In London for the weekend , just returned to car to back windscreen smashed in, many items stolen but worst of all my Chanel bag which I returned to the car deliberately for safekeeping.

this is the only designer bag I have, saved for years and highly unlikely to ever be in a position to buy one again.

bag was very well hidden.

I have a crime ref and police have left notes and police tape on the car.

is there any chance at all that insurance will cover this ?

please please please help

I don’t think car insurance would cover. Do you have it itemised on your home insurance? I have this for my engagement ring but I’m not sure if they would cover in this situation. Sorry about your bag OP, it’s rotten luck 😓

HiggyHop · 08/10/2023 20:46

How on earth would you think a bag is safe in a car? What kind of safekeeping is that?

androidnotapple · 08/10/2023 20:47

Need to check your policy, most have a limit for contents in the car - mine was about £150 when car was stolen.

presumably something was on view to make them smash the windscreen, what was it?

Ratfinkstinkypink · 08/10/2023 20:47

Is it covered on your house insurance? Aviva paid out for a dSLR camera that was stolen from the boot of my car but it was the house insurance that covered it not the car insurance.

Chaneltheft · 08/10/2023 20:47

Not itemised under home insurance. To the comment of why I put it in the car . Was spending the day alone with a 5 year old and 17 week old baby. I knew I wouldn’t be able to have eyes on it at all times. Of course I now wish I kept it on me or left it at home !

Do you still have proof of purchase?

Happiestonthebeach · 08/10/2023 20:48

This is really crappy comment. OP obviously thought it was safer in her car and is feeling really upset. Try and have some empathy.

Chaneltheft · 08/10/2023 20:48

Yes I have the receipt

Where in the car? Your insurance policy will state where items left in the car may be covered.

Penguinsmum · 08/10/2023 20:49

.so so sorry to hear that. I hope you get it sorted.

Changingplace · 08/10/2023 20:49

Where were you staying that you thought leaving expensive items in the car was a safer option? I don’t think insurance will cover it but you can only try.

Chaneltheft · 08/10/2023 20:49

We had stayed overnight so there was an Adidas bag and kids trunki in the boot

I’d say no, my house insurance covers items up to £3k when I’m out and about but I’ve had to insure all bags and jewellery over that individually. I’m not sure they would pay up if I’d left it in the car

I’m so sorry, I’m not sure how long you’ve had your bag but they are retailing around £6k now :(

I have to say I do find it incredible you would do this. I expect the insurance company would be very suspicious.

Why would someone break into your car? What was on display for them to choose your car?

OldTinHat · 08/10/2023 20:50

As PP has suggested, this may be covered under your household contents insurance policy if you have a good, comprehensive 'valuables out of home' type of cover.

Sorry this happened to you 😢

Not v helpful

Findyourneutralspace · 08/10/2023 20:50

Some policies will cover, some won’t. My friend’s makeup bag was stolen with some expensive cosmetics, which added up to quite a lot, and they paid, but you’d have to check your policy and excess.

Soontobe60 · 08/10/2023 20:50

Presumably your bag is covered under your house insurance?

Ratfinkstinkypink · 08/10/2023 20:51

Check your house insurance for single item cover, you might be able to claim that way.

fattytum · 08/10/2023 20:51

no one here knows what your insurance policies say. Goodluck though

Chaneltheft · 08/10/2023 20:51

Thanks what I really want to know is is there anything I can actively do now to increase the Chance of a claim being successful ?

thank you for all the comments and yeh of course I wish I’d just kept it on me now

This happened to my SIL and her bag wasn’t covered. They probably watched you put it in there.

Chaneltheft · 08/10/2023 20:53

Yes sadly I think you’re right. Having a baby and toddler with me probanly made me less aware of surroundings

Heyhoherewegoagain · 08/10/2023 20:53

You can only try….albeit this was 20 years ago, but my house insurance paid out when my handbag was stolen from my car

Coatscoatscoast · 08/10/2023 20:55

Is it worth checking bins/hedges etc nearby? If they didn’t know the value of the bag itself they might have ransacked it and dumped it
