I need some help please so posting mainly for traffic.
MIL had a stroke last year, she's back at home living with her pregnant dd (my SIL).
They jointly own their property together, having bought it from the council in 2020. They're still in the 5 year period of being unable to sell without paying back part of the discount. SIL couldn't afford to move since mortgage rates have gone up and she's moving onto maternity leave in December. It's only a 2 bed semi detached property but since SIL has met her dp 2 years ago and his SS, there will now be upto 5 in the property once the baby is born.
I've been trying to help MIL find alternative accommodation. We're on the council list but because she's on the mortgage/deeds she's on a reduced band so in all honesty I doubt we will ever get anywhere. She hasn't ever contributed to the mortgage or the property upkeep however.
We've been looking at private rentals and one came up that was cheap, as it was discounted rent with a local developer, so essentially brand new and ground floor etc. MIL has decided that actually she would now like to live in supported accommodation.
Does anyone know how we can achieve this? I'll ring adult social services in the morning but I wanted to know if this is something that can be done under medical need or if we are still going to be in the never ending queue for social housing. SIL is going to be at the point soon where she won't be able to physically help MIL due to her pregnancy and if she has a CS for 6/8 weeks after birth. SIL is understandably not keen on having carers coming in several times a day, MIL has had carers in the past and has not engaged with them so seems pointless anyway. Would MIL be expected to pay for the care using the property to fund it does anyone know? This is all new to me.
FWIW MIL definitely needs help, she's lost half her vision, her mobility is shot and she's struggling to cope when she's on her own.
