Complaining about Village life?

I just don’t really get this.

I live in a rural village and almost every week we have someone complaining on the village online group about one thing or another… mostly over things that pretty much come along with rural village life. The top culprits are usually along the lines of:

”they haven’t told us they are going to spread manure and now I can’t open my windows because of the smell”

“church bells ringing at all hours”

“the internet speed is always so poor”

Why are you living rurally if you didn’t factor these things in? What is complaining on a Facebook groups supposed to do about manure? IMO a lot of these things are minor annoyances. I know not everyone has the choice of where to live but I know this is not the case for some of the regular moaners. And I know village life can sometimes be dreary but I love it and have always lived in small villages so I know I’m biased.

please enlighten me, I’m genuinely baffled.

Tractors in a field going up and down noisily with lights on at 3am early Monday morning. It woke her, her husband and her child and she was incandescent with rage. She’d had to put up with them all day Saturday and all day Sunday ruining her beautiful view, but this was her absolute limit. Barely any sleep and she had to be at work for 9.

This was the best day ever on my village Facebook.

Lol 😆

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 08/10/2023 09:32

Our top two are people moving here and complaining about tractors driving through the village. I mean, did they not drive past all of the farms on their way into the village when they came to look?

And complaining that they can't get a taxi/ubereats. No taxi firms here and ubereats is for other people, you have to fetch your takeaway or make your own food Grin

I love village Facebook. My village is not populated by Nobel prize winners. I keep my favourites in an album, some highlights attached.

We lived in a village it was the chicken shit that drove me mad I didn’t complain on FB though we lived there as it was housing for DH work.
we live in a “village” that’s not a village now but the old timers hate the new comers we have 4 primary schools, a high school a supermarket many pubs etc The old timers don’t like the newcomers doesn’t affect me I just find it funny

You're allowed to not like the behaviour of the hunt even in the most rural of rural places. It's when people start taking against pest control with guns that country people start rolling their eyes.

Dita73 · 08/10/2023 09:38

This happens all the time where I live too. People seem to think that if you live in the country it’s all growing your own veg and riding horses. It is quite funny when reality hits them

Dessertinthedesert · 08/10/2023 09:39

Not rural but beside the sea. Lots of newbies complaining of the fog horn.

Maybe he’s one of “there fallen comrads” now, those motorcyclists of the Eastern Front…

Someone who recently moved to our village was whingeing online about the milk tanker disturbing their peace & quiet by noisily driving over cattle grids when visiting farms early in the morning. I imagined them eating a bowl of weetabix & sipping a latte while doing it…

Clemally · 08/10/2023 09:44

I have faster broadband in our hamlet than we did in town 😎

margotrose · 08/10/2023 09:50

Ours is full of people moaning about tractors on the roads and making them late for work 😂

BumpkinChic · 08/10/2023 09:51

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr those screenshots are magnificent

nice to hear not everyone has a moany village page. to be fair it is usually the same handful of culprits but it feels like it’s got a lot worse lately.

a particularly grumpy one this morning about the church bells and sounding off about the church in general really rattled me hence my original post.

Our page is certainly very active but DH has just kindly shown me how to “mute” specific groups so now back to a bit of peace and quiet and the comforting smell of chicken poo 😂

I grew up in a village on the south coast and never experienced any of this. We all moaned to each other when the farmer spread muck on the fields, of course, but maybe it’s because of the lack of SM back then?

It does make me laugh when I hear people complaining about the seagulls.

Musicalsfan · 08/10/2023 09:58

Slightly different situation but years ago I was on holiday in Swanage and read the letters page of the local newspaper.
i don’t know if it still happens but people in motorhomes would stop overnight along the side of the road between Studland and the car ferry to Poole. One camper wrote to the paper complaining about all the locals driving past their motorhome early in the morning to catch the ferry to go to work in Bournemouth.

Brefugee · 08/10/2023 10:02

Ours is pretty boring. But 5here has been a standoff lately. Speed limit through some of the village is 50 kph (pop <1,000) but other parts are 30 kph. The people who live at the start of the village have lost 2 cats to cars. So put up 2 small signs with a picture of a cat (like a traffic sign with a red line through it).

Someone took them down in the dead of night (lots of us think the limit should be 30,btw,the village is 900 years old, has only 2 intersecting roads anyway, and they are narrow, twisty and full of parked cars. You can barely get up to 30 anyway)

Post in the fb group saying put them back etc, and a livrly "discussion" ensued.

A week later 2 more signs went up - 4 times the size. So far they are still there (and most people slow down)

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 08/10/2023 09:11

Oh dear! 😂

The best one we've had was someone new moving in to a place down a narrow lane and putting up homemade signs for 'No HGVs!'.

On the public highway.
That also serves farms, who need deliveries and milk tankers etc.

Makes you wonder how people like this, think the stuff they buy from shops etc, gets there in the first place.

AtmosAtmos · 08/10/2023 10:05

I grew up in a village. The tractor and smells complaint would be ridiculous, don’t see them on our local page. I have a lot of sympathy for the broadband. See a lot on local fb about needing an upgrade from everyone.

Lots of local people as well as newer ones have always worked in the town or city and their jobs now hybrid and getting another fully from office job isn’t as easy. There aren’t jobs in the village. The council and other facilities expect things to be done online and it’s a long journey to be able to see someone face to face.
