AIBU to think right to buy scheme should be scrapped?

There was a debate on LBC today about the shortage of social housing and the presenter said no party would support scrapping the right to buy scheme as it is too popular.

To me it seems mad to be selling off social housing at a discount, further depleting our national stock of social housing, despite thousands of people being on waiting lists.

I get it is a massive boost for the person you sell it to but in the long run wouldn't keeping it help more families in need?

I hope this isn't massively controversial - genuinely interested in if there is huge support for this scheme and if so why?

I agree that it’s crazy that such profits have been made on social housing.
I feel that the policy could be tweaked a bit and once the house is sold on again or inverted then a percentage of the profits needs to go back to the council to pay for more social housing. It still benefits the person who had right to buy and also the council will gain from the increase value of the property as well.

I can understand Council tenants not wanting to let go of Right to buy. However I don’t think it’s fair given that a fifth of people in council accommodation earn above minimum wage.

It would be great to have a better, wider scheme for helping ALL people on a lower wage get on the housing ladder.

The six-figure council house tenants: 6,000 who earn more than £100,000 can stay in home 'if they pay market rent'

There are 15,000 tenants in social housing even though they have household incomes of more than £80,000 – with 6,000 earning more than £100,000.

It needs to be scrapped now.

So many of these former council properties ended up being bought by private sector businesses that flourished and became vast Housing Associations whereby they'd spend as little as possible on refurbs and maintenance but claim vast amounts of housing benefits on behalf of tenants.

It's interesting to note that so many of these Housing Associations have so many properties in previous council estates.

It’s too late. If it was scrapped tomorrow it would make no difference. The damage is irreparably done.
