DH thinks I’m a miserable manhater! (Lighthearted- I think)

So as I’ve got older I’m less tolerant of noise.
Sat quietly in my home, CLANK CLANK CLANK! neighbour spends hours trying to presumably undo something on his car. By the continuous clanking it’s not working.

Clanker gives it a rest. Sceeeeeechhh, whiizzzzz, circular saw. Different neighbour, sawing endless amounts of wood for no reason at all. The screech is unbearable, not sure of type of saw but literally goes through you.

Screecher stops after three hours. Different neighbour jet washes drive for the millionth time. Drone whoosh brrrrr.

That’s without the strimming and leaf blowing, revving of motorbikes and cars from petrol head further up the road etc etc.

So I say to my dh, the bloody men are at it again! And will they make their man noises simultaneously? No! One makes man noises to alert community of their man jobs the the other politely waits til he’s finished then he can alert us to his man jobs and so on and so forth.

Dh then goes out back to pointlessly chop wood!! Clunk clunk clunk. I tell him to give the poor bloody neighbours a rest!!

We’re laughing tongue in cheek really, and I know there are some nasty man hating comments on here so I’m preparing myself for being slated.

But… any of you find men are just pointlessly bloody noisy ???

I brought noise cancelling headphones but my next door neighbour has had an extension built for the last 18 months

8 am to 8 pm 6 days a week

the neighbour on the other side after living their 20 years had a breakdown due to the noise and is moving next week

m I’ve had my drive repeatedly dropped by her builders and when I’ve got irate at being unable to get on or off my drive have received verbal abuse

the extension comes half way down my garden and she has now in the last week had huge lights put on them and they shine constantly at night time into my kitchen - another thing

great for her that she now has 8 bedrooms I’ve aged 10 year

@Peacendkindness
aw that sounds more serious you have my sympathies there and hope you get some peace now

But you have reminded me of the last two tradesmen who came here, great big industrial strength radios, you could hear them far and wide 🫣

I voted YABU but your post made me laugh.
Other than the revving of engines, I'd say most of those fall in the category of standard maintenance tasks though. They're only man noises because somehow outdoor maintenance tasks still seem to be done by men more than women

The industrial strength radios are man noise though, and same for loud car door slamming.

Oysterbabe · 07/10/2023 07:12

A lot of what you describe is chores that need to be done. It is DH who does the strimming / hedge cutting / general DIY in this house. If he didn't do it I would have to.

TwilightSkies · 07/10/2023 07:15

One of my neighbours spends 5-6 hours every Saturday AND Sunday washing his car. It’s SO loud. He has so many different bits of kit, a power hose, something to hoover the water off after, a smaller hose, a special super loud car vacuum 🙄 we don’t live in the country or anything, so his car is never dirty in the first place.

Lovesocksie · 07/10/2023 07:31

I agree strimming needs doing and yes in my house dh does that, no complaints really which is why I left that til the last paragraph. Didn’t mention mowing etc as yes these jobs need to be done.

I think pointless extremely noisy circular sawing (the guys got literally wood everywhere) no a woman probably wouldn’t get the urge to do that! Or mindlessly clanking a part on a car which clearly isn’t coming loose. Or constantly reviving engines or re jet washing drives which have been done the day before. I’m not sure any of these are essential maintenance!

This is such my bug bear. Leaf blowers. I mean WTF? Ppl used to use a broom. It’s power tools. All weekend I am treated to an orchestra of engines.

Lovesocksie · 07/10/2023 07:54

Orchestra of engines- love that!
It’s the consecutive solos that are getting me down 😂

The man across the road is known to me as the man of perpetual power tools. There is something every single day. When they first moved in he spent almost a month running a pressure washer for most of the day, everyday. I can't see over the fence so god knows what he was washing.

Everything is currently quiet but the man in the house behind me is starting a self build extension soon. Deep joy.

Thepeopleversuswork · 07/10/2023 10:13

Love this. And I completely get you. The competitive power-tooling and leaf-blowing etc.

TBF I don't think its deliberate, I just think it's never crossed their minds that their noise might be intrusive (because no one's ever told them). Women grow up being hyper conscious of their social "footprint" on the world and learn very young to make themselves as unobtrusive and quiet as possible. That rarely happens to men.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 07/10/2023 10:28

Thankful to live in a neighbourhood with none of this! Unfortunately I do live with DP who thinks stairs are to RUN up and floors are to STOMP on and counters are to BASH things on and doors are to SLAM. And if he runs out if house to abuse he fills the few remaining pockets of silence with foot tapping, throat clearing and performance sneezing – in recent years he’s added a post-sneeze “aaarrgh!” to really round out the experience. It all seems so much more effort than not making noise.

LauderSyme · 07/10/2023 10:28

YABU but I totally agree with you! Have myself been driven mad by the male-originating consecutive solo.

I have also silently screamed shuuuuut uuuup as the car tinkerer and the tree trimmerer riff off each other and the disturbed neighbourhood dogs provide percussive emphasis.

But ds is autistic and sometimes has loud and raging meltdowns so I get my own back! (joke!)

bombastix · 07/10/2023 11:10

There was a neighbour who used to be out every single day with his leaf blower. I thought he was mad.

He moved. There are leaves all over his former drive. And it is nice and quiet!

TotalOverhaul · 07/10/2023 11:25

Leaf blowers are the worst. I just want to holler: get a rake! Rakes are silent, eco, and do the job as well if not better. Rakes, city parkies/school groundsmen/Sunday morning jobbers. Silent rakes.

Sparkletastic · 07/10/2023 11:27

My DH unloads the dishwasher by banging glassware and crockery down and forcefully throwing cutlery into drawers. Makes my teeth itch 😬

bombastix · 07/10/2023 11:41

I let my neighbours know if I am going to be doing something noisy like jet washing. They can plan their day to be away as I don't like the noise too much myself.

I forgot about that 18 months of their radio blaring everyday and their misogynistic comments and swearing language too ….

I totally agree that some men just don’t have any concept of their effect on others.

Interestingly the noise makers my way are all divorced. Maybe they’re bored? Fulfilling a need? No missus to tell them to shut the bleep up?

My dh heard me go on for ever about the man noises, even agreed with me! ‘Oh number 6 is at it again’ then STILL went outside sneakily. Bang bang bang, pointless hammering and wood cutting. He was genuinely shocked when I explained he was extremely irritating and was probably annoying the entire neighbourhood 😂
