To ask if anybody has any tips? DDs curly hair

my DD(4) has lovely curly hair. When it’s wet it’s in ringlets. It’s also getting quite thick and she has lots of it. I’m constantly having to brush it as it can look messy quite easily but when I do brush it it does go quite frizzy looking due to brushing the curls out. I was wondering if anybody has any tips for this kind of hair please? I’m brushing her hair and styling it in the morning before school but after a day at school it seems to be everywhere and looks like I haven’t brushed it!!

NEVER brush it when dry!!

Wash and conditioner. Yes, conditioner after every single shampoo. Then brush it through whilst wet.

Do not brush when dry. Ever.

Allmarbleslost · 06/10/2023 22:09

Don't brush curly hair when it's dry. Detangle when it's soaked with conditioner and wet. Refresh it in the mornings with some curl creme and water.

Allmarbleslost · 06/10/2023 22:09

Oh and silk pillow case.

WanderingWitches · 06/10/2023 22:10

My 7 year old DS has shoulder length ringlets. I never brush it dry. If its messy in the morning, a wet it and then brush it.
Using some hair serum or leave in conditioner usually makes his curls look nicer.

Wide comb, not a brush, unless you want the dandelion clock effect!

theduchessofspork · 06/10/2023 22:17

Never brush when dry as PPs say

always use conditioner

Never rub hard with a towel after washing - it will really frizz. For preference use a curly hair towel (basically t shirt material). Squeeze the worst of it out and let it air dry or use a defuser

Can you put it in bunches for school? When she’s older she can fluff it out with her fingers at lunchtime

Silk pillowcases or putting it in a top knot will help keep frizz at bay at night

and then for the morning when you aren’t actually washing it get a plant water sprayer and a wide tooth comb to deal with tangles and friz - a bit of conditioner can help too

EmmaOvary · 06/10/2023 22:19

Ditch the brush and use a wide toothed comb instead. Comb it as little as possible.

AnnaMagnani · 06/10/2023 22:36

Never brush it ever! Wide tooth comb or fingers only.

Embrace the random look you get with curls and learn to love it, it just doesn't do what straight hair does so she needs to love what her hair does do.

Ideally use products designed for curly hair, there are quite a few kids brands such as CurlyEllie.

Use a lot of conditioner. Like an insane amount of conditioner. Honestly her hair will thank you for it.

MoorlandWanderer · 06/10/2023 22:43

I only ever use conditioner to wash it. Also second never ever ever brushing when dry.

Styling for school - up styles are very cute on curly hair plus they come home looking tidy. Ideas: half up half down, messy bun (ponytail but don’t pull the last ‘pull’ all the way through), space buns, space buns half up/half down, bunches with just the top section of hair.

Curlylocksx · 07/10/2023 22:45

Thanks everyone! Some great tips here 😊

Curly girl products, no towels on hair and don't use a brush.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 07/10/2023 23:21

Oh, I feel your pain. DD has the most beautiful ringlets, but they were hellish for years. As everyone else has said - never, ever brush curly hair! I used to scrunch it with my fingers after washing and then wrap a very soft cotton scarf around them to absorb the water. Morning before school, I'd spray on leave in conditioner and just lightly comb it through with my fingers.

I know a lot of people swear by tangle teasers, but they never worked for us. A really good conditioner makes the world of difference, as does plaiting it at bedtime so it can't get tangled overnight.

Now that DD is older she cuts her own hair because as we say 'you don't have to worry about cutting it too precisely because the way curls tumble, it looks totally natural!'

Kitcatmouse · 07/10/2023 23:53

I’ve started using Curly Ellie products on my DD hair and have noticed a huge difference. Then when it’s dry I use My Little Coco curling custard to tackle the bed head and just use my fingers. Never brush dry as PP have said.
also don’t wash too regularly as it tends to dry out!

Newgirls · 07/10/2023 23:56

Yep conditioner and only comb when wet.

When she’s older take her to a stylist who is good with curls (ideally has curls themselves) that made all the difference for my girls

Clarabe1 · 08/10/2023 00:18

I have very curly hair and my straight haired mother used to brush it. In every single photo of me as a child I look like crystal tips! You NEVER brush curly hair when it is dry, it’s a massive no no. Dry it with a cotton t shirt, never rub it with a towel because that will create frizz and spray some leave in conditioner in it and let’s the curls form and just do there thing!

liveforsummer · 08/10/2023 00:35

Dd has very curly hair. We have not brushed it or used shampoo in about 7 or 8 years. It's washed with a silicone free conditioner and dry angled by hand or wide comb . We like garnier hair food or ultimate blends so not anything expensive or specialist. Then after washing run a blob through the hair, scrunch and leave in. Leave to air dry and that's it. In the morning will spray with water and rub a bit more conditioner through and finger comb. Her hair always looks fab.

Hankunamatata · 08/10/2023 00:35

Friend swears by one of those cute silk bonnets for bed for stopping range and frizz

Hankunamatata · 08/10/2023 00:36

Range = tangle

saltinesandcoffeecups · 08/10/2023 01:35

Use way more moisturizing products than you think is sensible. Curly hair defies all logic. As others have said don’t ever brush or comb when dry. I don’t own a comb or brush and haven’t for about 20 years.

Ringlets especially are happiest when they find their friends IYSWIM. Don’t disrupt the natural order. The most I do is finger comb while the conditioner is still in, after it’s rinsed it’s a scrunch dry with a a towel and a diffuser.

You can wash curly hair every day…but see my comment about moisture. Sometimes heavy and weight is better when it comes to curls.

ETA: Aveda has great product for curly hair. Not sure I’d shell out for a kid but as she gets older something to think about

Shadyboots23 · 08/10/2023 01:50

This is a good cheat sheet

RandyAndTheRainbows · 08/10/2023 01:55

I never brush I use a comb when wet, a wide toothed comb which is specially created to lift and define curls. I am probably a 2c/3a curl type so not as curly as your child but still pretty curly and only products for curly hair stop it being a giant frizzball.

stonedaisy · 08/10/2023 10:43

Moroccan oil.. its pricey but you only use a tiny bit and its amazing at detangling. I buy it for my 5 year old dd

Girasoli · 08/10/2023 10:48

If you don't want to get her hair wet on cold mornings to brush it, you could wet/brush it/ and braid it before bed time then redo the plaits in the morning before school. Maybe running a little bit of serum/oil through your fingers to smooth any frizz.

I like the banana hair food shampoo and conditioner, I don't think that would be too harsh/chemically for a 7 year old.
