To think this isn't a normal way for a physio to behave?

I have been experiencing really bad lower leg and foot pain, and went to see a physio today to see what's going on. The clinic is attached to a local professional sports ground and treats all their players. He asked what the issue was and I explained, and he asked me to confirm I've adhd and am hypermobile (was on the assessment paperwork I had to fill in).

He said he had ADHD and was hypermobile too, fine, that's interesting etc, then asked me to get on the massage table. He said I likely had Achilles tendonitis and started holding my feet and then launched into a speech about barefoot shoes and passed me his laptop to watch a video on the shoes while he still held my feet.

Then he clicked another video about the covid vaccine and started talking about being an anti vaxxer and that I shouldn't be letting my kids have any vaccines. This went on for about 20 mins. Still holding my feet and gently rubbing them. Then he showed me one exercise to do at home, and gave me his phone number to call him directly if I had any questions.

The appointment was £65!! And I'm in no less pain than when I went in, and felt really weirded out!! Should I complain?? Would there be a point as it was a private physio clinic and not an NHS one? Can they just not really treat you?! And gabble away about whatever they like, or is it against some kind of professional code?! I feel really stupid but I just kind of nodded my head as he was talking as I'm in so much pain I just wanted some help with my feet!!!

Yes it is inappropriate to lecture you on his anti-vax views. I would complain to the clinic.

To be a practicing physio he should be registered with HCPC - check if he is actually registered here https://www.hcpc-uk.org/check-the-register/ you can also register a complaint with them I think.

Check the Register and find a registered health and care professional

Online Register to find a paramedic, chiropodist, podiatrist, physiotherapist, psychologist, occupational therapist, dietitian

Is he registered on the HCPC website?

I have had many years of physio for various issues, plus I’m also hyper mobile, and I would not be happy with that ‘consultation’ at all.

That's all so unprofessional and absolutely not normal. Go and see a female physio

AvocadotoastORahouse · 06/10/2023 20:02

That is totally unprofessional and I would be submitting a complaint and asking for a refund!

AnathemaPulsifer · 06/10/2023 20:04

Absolutely unacceptable. My physio has diagnosed me with Achilles tendonitis and each session is a mix of demonstrating and practising exercises and intense soft tissue massage, with some sessions of infrared therapy. Yours sounds useless!

PostAndGhost · 06/10/2023 20:06

YANBU!!!! What a load of quackery. Do ask for a refund, you have nothing to lose!

quiteathome · 06/10/2023 20:08

Was he actually a physio? I would report to HCPC. Private practitioners also have to follow professional standard. And if he isn't actually a physiotherapist he can't call himself a physiotherapist as it is a protected title so report to trading standards

myjohnnywasasaint · 06/10/2023 20:08

Please complain.

myjohnnywasasaint · 06/10/2023 20:09

And I might piss some people off saying this but I've had a lot of physio and body therapy treatments, and I now insist on a female therapist.

headcheffer · 06/10/2023 20:56

Oh god now I do feel really stupid Blush thanks all, I'll complain to the clinic tomorrow!

While I believe the Covid vaccine (not all vaccines) is poison I believe his behaviour was bizarre.

ChaosAndCrumbs · 06/10/2023 23:11

I have ADHD and Hypermobility. I’m impressed you didn’t comment in session - I would have! Just so many questions desperately wanting to escape… but not wanting to derail. Ugh.

But I would make a complaint focusing on my concern his personal anti vaccine views were being shared and how that impacts patient safety. Some patients may be highly influenced by a trusted supposedly medical authority sharing these views.

Coronado2 · 06/10/2023 23:17

It's not just that he forced you to watch a video about his personal views, he hasn't effectively dealt with your issue. You wouldn't expect to feel better after 1 session, but you would expect to be given more than 1 exercise to help with your issue. My physio normally gives me a minimum of 4 at a time.

Poison?! Why aren't we all dead then! 🤣

Ahem

OP, definitely totally out of order, I could complain and ask for my money back
