I feel a bit stuck in a rut, i want to try and get a bit healthier this winter but it feels like the hardest time of year to get motivated! I’d like to loose 4-5 pounds but also just feel better in myself … what small things could I start to do to motivate myself?

I think as a first off you need Vitamin D and immune support supplements.

Look after your skin, extreme cold & wet and the wham of central heating sap everything out of my skin. I always feel a bit better in myself when I'm up to scratch with my face routine, I just feel less of a hag.

Weight loss is a tricky thing, if you're feeling down and out I think the best thing is to focus on wellness first and then look at diet changes later. Make good choices and don't expect overnight results.

Soup! Sometimes for breakfast. Without bread and butter. Or a mug as a mid afternoon snack with a Babybel. Really easy way to get veg in.

Lunch time walk to get some daylight on your face.

Vit D.

Good skincare.

Cashmere bed socks.

Why is this a AIBU/YANBU?

I've bought myself a warm weatherproof coat and some good waterproof boots and plan to get out for a good walk in the fresh air every day. If it's crisp and bright it will be uplifting and if it's cold and wet I can come home to a nice warm shower and a hot drink. I'm hoping I'll lose a few pounds and get fitter and also improve my mental health. Here's hoping!

Outside day for at least an hour.. Going to bed earlier, lots of books and warm drinks.

Eh up, the thread police are here!
Possibly for traffic? But it's a lovely thread so who cares if it's not in chat.

I swim on my way into work.
Enjoy a hot chocolate outside watching the stars with DH.
Dog walks in the woods.
Skin care.

Girasoli · 06/10/2023 19:59

Try and get outside every day in the daylight (walk on your lunchbreak of you work?)

Open all your windows for at least 10 minutes everyday otherwise your house will feel stuffy when you have the heating on.

Girasoli · 06/10/2023 19:59

(that was meant to be if you work)

Home made Chai tea. Using as many polyphenols rich spices as I can. Cloves, star anice, cardamon, cinnamon, coriander seeds and fresh ginger. Black tea and milk, on the stove for 10 min. Delicious and a real kick for winter blues

Bobbybobbins · 06/10/2023 20:06

Warm food and drinks
Exercise when possible
Staying hydrated- it's harder when it's cold as I don't think you feel thirsty as much
Taking care of skin/lips

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 06/10/2023 20:09

Fleece lined leggings are a game changer!

Timmytap18 · 06/10/2023 20:12

Soup!

I made a chicken, veg and lentil one today. Whole family have asked for seconds. Even the toddler was smacking her lips.

Makes you feel good and is nutritious.

Direct your willpower efficiently.

Resist buying treats and junk food when you’re shopping, and then you don’t need to worry about resisting the urge at home.

Prep lots of healthy foods to make it quick and easy to grab a healthy meal or put a lunch box together in a hurry.
(This week I cooked and shredded a chicken and boiled a half dozen eggs so that I would have an easy protein ready. If I eat protein at lunch, I’m much less prone to snacking)

Hedjwitch · 06/10/2023 20:35

Put bowls of water on your radiators to combat the drying effect of central heating. Add a few drops of essential oil of your choice: neroli mandarin and lemon are all uplifting.
Tea tree and eucalyptus will help with stuffy noses and headaches.
Take a good multivitamin, and get outside when you can
Wild swim in the sea if you get the chance
