My goodness! What a terrible pair of nurses.

Shocking, just shocking, how these two nurses have interacted with regards to patients, whom where in their care, definitely requires a full criminal investigation.

Coroner is probing EIGHT deaths on the same NHS ward where pair of 'dangerous and callous' nursing staff drugged and ill-treated patients - and now face jail.

A coroner is probing eight deaths on the same NHS ward where a pair of 'dangerous and callous' nursing staff drugged and ill-treated patients.

The 54-year-old senior nurse drugged two patients for an 'easy life' at the unit, which was described as having 'a culture of abuse', in April 2017 and November 2018, her trial heard.

She swapped vile messages with her partner in crime, Charlotte Wilmot, including one in which Hudson boasted of sedating an elderly patient 'to within an inch of her life'. The nurses were warned that they both face jail.
They also stole medication from the 'corrupt' ward at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, with the trial hearing claims that '95 per cent of the staff' would take drugs from the unit, sometimes on a recreational basis.

Catherine Hudson, 54, and Charlotte Wilmot, 48, were today found guilty of drugging 'troublemaker' patients at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. The same ward is being probed over more deaths.

And so it begins. Yes awful things happen in all professions. Let's see how this goes on mn .

Sounds horrendous and awful for the poor families involved.

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/10/2023 05:16

Mmmm...

Not that they're not vile.. but....

Part of me wonders how convenient it is that these two can be served up on a plate, and 'look we've done a great job tidying up this awful awful hospital'... and the real issues continue to fester away behind the scenes.

My mates in hospital at the minute, I've messages on my phone very similar, about slipping zopiclone in bed 2's water when she goes for a piss as her TV is too loud, or just sticking a fucking pillow over her head.

The difference is, my mates IN hospital, very poorly and bed 2 is an annoying cow - neither of us work there, and neither of us would actually do it.

I hope the real, underlying issues are addressed as well as these two paying the price for their abhorrent behaviour. But I suspect not, and I suspect this will put even more pressure on overworked nursing staff, which ultimately won't do patients any real favours.

Bad apples or systemic I wonder .

Pottedpalm · 06/10/2023 09:56

Sadly the image we are meant to have of caring, professional medical staff is tarnished. I have come into contact with many over the last eight years and while many are compassionate and empathetic I have encountered many for whom the patient seems, frankly, to be a bloody nuisance. This is prevalent across all levels from
consultants down.
As in all professions, there is a range. I’m grateful for the lovely nurses who will take time to hold my hand when I’m terrified, to consultants who listen and reassure, and carers in
homes who treated my mother in a kind, loving manner and who
came along to her funeral and shed a tear with us. This pair and those like them should
be found out.

PosterBoy · 06/10/2023 10:00

Good on that student nurse for reporting them. It must have been a really scary thing to do. We know what witch hunts there are for whistleblowers in the NHS.

Entirely unrelated to these nurses, a day after police were called in, they also ended up investigating a suspicious death by (sexual?) assault on the very same ward.

That hospital sounds horrendous

Blackpool Vic it'll be systemic. I grew up between Blackpool and Preston it was a running joke that rather than call an ambulance call a taxi so at least you can go to Preston. This is back in the 90s. It's always had a bad reputation

But as you and your mate are not nurses and don't have access to.the ward clinic room and drug cupboards how are your messages at all.relevant to this ?
I can well believe this happened th having worked in elderly care .

RowcheRascal · 06/10/2023 10:37

@PosterBoy bloody hell? Is that right ? That's horrific.

SueDonnym · 06/10/2023 10:41

I think we choose our professions at a bad time in life ie when we are teens and the image of the caring nurse admired by all seems a good idea .
I steered my DDs away from 'women' mainly roles to ensure they got better than average pay.
The problem is that there is a lingering martyrdom in the NHS because of this pay issue.

Teaandbiscuits60 · 06/10/2023 10:57

I’m 6 months recovering from stroke and I’m absolutely appalled! I was in a room/ ward of four and no one I repeat NO ONE needed sedation! What a vile pair of individuals! After the stroke, I’ve never felt so vulnerable so their patients were vulnerable and their behaviour is despicable. “Within an inch of his/her life implies something very dark. Why are they even working for the nhs????

and where one of the consultants (cardiac) has been suspended for sexual harassment

Nasty cunts, if they’re guilty I hope they get everything they deserve and more.

PosterBoy · 06/10/2023 11:42

Although a male member of staff was arrested on suspicion of rape and murder, they were never charged. The police have still not found a suspect

I can't believe anyone would voluntarily enter that hospital or ward. Just awful.

Mum died after being sexually assaulted in hospital bed

Valerie Kneale was admitted to hospital after suffering a stroke but was later found dead

I agree. There has to be serious management failings throughout the organisation for this sort of abuse to happen with no action taken.

Standards for professionals in positions of trust with "power" over vulnerable people have to be higher than for other jobs or jo public. I hope they both get very long sentences to reflect this.

Pacificisolated · 06/10/2023 12:17

I just do not understand why as a nurse you would choose to work in a stroke ward unless you had the utmost empathy and patience. I had a student placement in a neuro ward with dedicated stroke beds and it was hands down my least favourite placement. The poor patients are so distressed and vulnerable due to the sudden loss of their independence, their behaviour can be erratic and the physical demands high. It is understandably not suited to everyone.
There are so many nursing jobs out there at the moment/always, why stay in a place like that when you hate the patient cohort unless you derive some pleasure from hurting them?

Passepartoute · 06/10/2023 12:29

trial hearing claims that '95 per cent of the staff' would take drugs from the unit, sometimes on a recreational basis.

How on earth could that happen? I thought that hospitals had to be able to account for every drop of medicine and every pill on the ward? Would they have been taking drugs prescribed for patients so the patients didn't get them?

DreamingofGinoclock · 06/10/2023 12:43

Not read the whole thread but lots of people talking of health care staff being a range from compassionate to callous.

I think one of the main NHS problems is the recruitment and retention of the compassionate staff .... due to lack of resources these staff can't offer the compassionate care that they want to so many leave putting more pressure on remaining staff.

jenpil · 06/10/2023 13:16

OP, saying "Oh my goodness, what a terrible pair!" hardly covers the evil deeds these 2 did.

Not just that hospital though. I think most of the NHS is rotten to the core these days.

Nearby hospitals, Lancaster and Barrow have also had problems. Lancaster hounded out whistleblower consultant Peter Duffy for complaining about lazy/incompetent colleagues. There were also major problems at Barrow maternity ward.

We made formal complaints about another nearby hospital, Blackburn, where a series of delays, incompetence and negligence killed my father in law who went in as a healthy, active newly retired bloke and ended up a living skeleton a few months later after a succession of mistakes, negligence, lack of care, etc.

My OH was referred to Blackpool for a stem cell transplant for cancer. It was total chaos and incompetence right from the first referral appointment with the consultant, Huge numbers of staff all hanging around, but none could be bothered to find his file, they lost his test results, the transplant co-ordinator couldn't be located, so it was a complete waste of a day. The consultant was very arrogant, wouldn't answer any questions, and when "he" decided the consultation was over, he just walked out. The next appointment was just as shambolic too, same scenario, staff everywhere but not actually doing anything other than small talk between themselves. Transplant co-ordinator was a bit more human, but let's say, she was a bit dense and didn't know what she was doing, so couldn't answer any of our questions either. Needless to say, OH didn't go ahead with the transplant as he had no confidence at all in them.

RoomOfRequirement · 06/10/2023 13:57

I wish I was surprised, but I've worked with some awful people. I think I read only one of them is a nurse, the other an Assistant Practitioner?

We can talk about some of the contributing factors like unsafe staffing, workload and culture of the ward from senior staff and management another time, but ultimately no Healthcare professional should ever be able to do this, or want to.

I have so much respect for that student nurse. And horrific that it had to be a student.

It's not "only coming out now". These were in the media a few years ago. It's taken this long for the police investigation and prosecution. Perhaps ask why the police and CPS have dragged their feet?
