To think you don’t go to A&E for eye pain?

A friend suggested I consider it, to make sure my vision is protected. But I’d never even consider it for eye pain, unless I had an acute injury. Basically had eye pain starting yesterday, and swelling of eyelid. It’s really red and it is quite swollen. Eye is sore every time I blink. But I’m not systemically unwell- normal appetite etc. a quick Google also mentioned get immediate medical attention for pain. But surely conjunctivitis, styes (don’t think it’s that as whole eyelid swollen- no lump or pimple) , all hurt? so why go to A&E? Or am I missing something!

It tends to only be the biggest hospitals that have eye casualties. At smaller places it would be a case of the normal A&E, and they could call in ophthalmology.

BabyFireflyx · 06/10/2023 00:36

Seriously? You don’t fuck around with eye pain. Eyelid pain maybe just wait and see, but actual eye? If you cant get an opticians appointment asap then A&E. Out of the blue like that, you don’t want to imagine the alternative you'd have leaving it.

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 06/10/2023 00:37

You should probably go to a walk in centre. If you’re very worried go to your local eye A&E.

SpilltheTea · 06/10/2023 00:37

Eye unit, always.

WereYouListeningToTheDudesStory · 06/10/2023 00:41

Like everyone says, go to Eye Casualty/equivalent. It's really not worth messing around with your eyes. There is bacteria in tap water that can blind you for a start.

It can be a quick way of getting a diagnosis and the back of the eye looked at. In my GC case we decided to go straight to A&E because they can't prescribe antibiotics. If you were looking at a eight hour wait, getting directed to an optician via 111 would get you seen quicker because they'd then book you into A&E with a diagnosis.

An optician can check the pressure in the eye which is important. My local Optician is now part of a scheme where they can start treatment, it's called an urgent eye care service.

Mostlyoblivious · 06/10/2023 00:44

Go.
Some places have eye A&E. There’s a reason for that, as sight is quite precious and what your describing sounds a little pressing.

Best of luck

LimePi · 06/10/2023 00:48

Not sure about your symptoms but for example strong glaucoma attack can permanently damage eyesight, so…

annlee3817 · 06/10/2023 01:03

Do you have an eye casualty near you? Ours we can call and self refer, I went with redness of the eye, light sensitivity and pain, and it was uveitis, which needed to be treated with steroids, serious if ignored. My husband was told my a nurse he had conjunctivitis and it turned out he had an ulcer on the eye, again serious. Personally I wouldn't brush off eye issues. Better to get checked out

PyongyangKipperbang · 06/10/2023 01:09

I thought that. Now have a chronic eye condition that could have been seen off if I had sought urgent attention. Also....... my ex was sent by his optician due to a partially detached retina that would have left him blind in that eye if he hadnt had urgent surgery.

My father is blind due to a decades old welding flash, we dont fuck about with sight in our family anymore.

Lemondrizzleandacuppa · 06/10/2023 01:10

@Lis1992 an A&E doctor would much rather see you for something that turns out to be trivial, than have to deal with a potentially serious condition that has damaged your vision permanently. I know hospitals are always busy, but medical staff want to help.

comfyshoes2022 · 06/10/2023 01:13

I would go.

SquigglyGum · 06/10/2023 01:15

You should go. I've had a few bouts of periorbital cellulitus, and my eye was really swollen. First time I went to a&e and they put me straight on iv antibiotics. They take it seriously due to proximity to your brain.

Since then I've been able to spot it early, go to the gp or urgent care clinic and get the antibiotics I've needed. I was a bit late the last time and had to go in for daily iv antibiotics for 5 days.

Please go.

dianamoonyan · 06/10/2023 01:16

I'd go to the emergency dept of the local eye infirmary if one were available.

Nat6999 · 06/10/2023 01:27

It will be the eye casualty department. I got sent by my optician when my chronic dry eyes started to show potentially irreversible damage to my corneas. I got seen & prescribed medication to reverse the damage & drops & gels to protect my eyes. It's a one stop shop for eye problems.

Theoriginalmrscillianmurphy · 06/10/2023 01:38

Oh ud go op, I really would.

Don't risk your eyesight.

MoominMamma15 · 06/10/2023 01:45

Chalazion possibly? I’ve had a few of these and they bloomin kill, the pain is un-believable and i was shocked at how much an eyelid could swell!

Hot compress and gentle massage was the solution but took a few days to go down.

Of course, speak to GP though if un-sure and if you feel it is more eye pain than eye-lid then seek further help/advice.

Eyelid Infections - Chalazion and Stye (Hordeolum)

A chalazion and stye are eyelid infections. The chalazion is on the conjunctival side. Styes, or hordeola, are eyelash follicle infections.

kamboozled · 06/10/2023 01:57

If there's a walk in center near you, that's an option. Alternatively some cities have eye ER's? I went to one in Bristol twice (once an infection and once I umm, papercut my eyeball...........)

ShelleyCarpenter · 06/10/2023 02:15

I went to my GP and she called the Eye Clinic at the hospital and sent me straight over

ThinWomansBrain · 06/10/2023 02:25

If I thought it was a sty, pharmacist probably, who is two doors away from the optician if needed. Or GP

FinallyMrsT · 06/10/2023 02:32

Orbital cellulitis is just 1 of the many medical emergencies that would require a&e

Aria999 · 06/10/2023 02:37

Start with a pharmacist?

drspouse · 06/10/2023 02:42

We don't have an eye casualty but when I had an eye problem the GP had no idea what to do and sent me to the optician, who referred me to the eye department urgently.

greenspaces4peace · 06/10/2023 02:57

of course you go to a&e, it could be herpes and you could go blind.
i'm a retired nurse and eye issues are NEVER brushed away equally for testicular pain in boys/men never brushed away always examined.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/10/2023 03:21

JamieJ93 · 05/10/2023 23:16

Another thing to consider is - celultis of the eye (probably not the case) but could progress if not treated properly.
Celultis of the eye can be quite serious.
(I'm only thinking of celultis of worse case scenario due to what you have listed)
