Why has my washing come out soaked??

I know there is Google etc but this is one in the long list of things, lone parent to 3 under 5 and I am at my wits end

OP posts:
FrangipaniBlue · 05/10/2023 13:28

If mine does this it's usually:

  1. filter clogged up

  2. too much stuff in

  3. too heavy stuff (a couple of big bath sheets does this)

  4. off balance - smaller number of things but stuck against one side

  5. someone has accidentally leaned on/pressed the "rinse hold" button

DiscoBeat · 05/10/2023 13:29

If it's been in the washing machine, it's unlikely to be dry. Can you clarify exactly what you mean?

The OP was very clear - it's coming out soaked (not just wet). 🙄

I would check your filters in case they're clogged, also sometimes with things like towels you get them all on one side of the drum so it's too heavy on one side. You can take a couple of towels out and replace with some lighter things to mix it up.

GingerIsBest · 05/10/2023 13:30

Hopefully it's just the filters and you can sort them. Worst case, the motor is going/has gone and will need to be replaced (or the machine will need to be replaced).

Clean the bottom filter first then put then back in on a spin/drain cycle and see where you get to.

Happened to me but I knew my washing machine was over 10yrs old. I literally sat and watched my machine on an empty wash to see if it wasn't spinning or draining and yet it wasn't spinning. Given how old it was and I could afford it, I just got a new one.

Is the drain blocked? You can unscrew it and see if something is in there. Make sure you put something underneath it first though or you could cause a flood.

Yes, this happened to my washing a few weeks ago.

But my washing wasn't soaked it just wasn't as dry as usual.

I tried to undo the lever to the drain but my washing machine is over 10 years old and I had never done it before so the lever wouldnt budge and I had to call a washing machine repairman who managed to undo it and took out lots of limescale.

He said that I should really have done it every 6 months or so but I didn't realise that and it didn't say that in the manual.

VeronicasCloset · 05/10/2023 13:52

Has the spin setting accidentally been turned to 0? Our old machine used to do this

CantGetDecentNickname · 05/10/2023 13:52

Firstly, split the load into two and put half in for a spin. If this works, do the other half as it is normally too much weight that prevents spinning. Assuming that is ok I'd then look at the filters first, clean them and then do a cleaning wash to clear sludge and limescale.

If it isn't spinning at all, then as others have said, it is worth checking the filters and the pump.

Do you have a friend or neighbour who you could call to ask if you could spin your clean but wet washing in their machine?

marshmallowfinder · 05/10/2023 13:53

The load may be uneven inside, so it just stops with everything sopping wet inside. Need to take some out or redistribute, if so.

Uggtrending · 05/10/2023 13:53

@ApolloandDaphne sometimes clothes are hardly wet if they have been spun well.

Do you have a Samsung washer OP? Check the grey rubber rim is there water collecting? If I don't dry my rim the clothes are often too wet.

SuperGinger · 05/10/2023 13:55

Could be the belt or the filter, you tube is your friend.

Calmdown14 · 05/10/2023 13:55

Agree with @FrangipaniBlue that too little can be the cause as well as too much.

It happens to mine sometimes if it's a white wash with a few light bits and a towel so not well balanced.

Just move it away from sides and spin again, usually only takes 10 minutes.

megletthesecond · 05/10/2023 13:59

If the filter is blocked you'll need to slowly drain it using the tiddly little hosepipe that is tucked away behind the lower trapdoor cover BEFORE you unscrew the drain cover. I drain it into ice cream or margarine tubs, it can take a while if the machine is full. Then get loads of towels for when you unscrew it. I had a button stuck in the drain this week.
Sympathy from me, this sort of thing tips me over the edge as a lone parent too 💐 .

Babyroobs · 05/10/2023 14:00

Ours often won't spin if the filter is blocked. Clean out the filter.

OrribleAlloween · 05/10/2023 14:02

@FrangipaniBlue

i leant on my tumble dryer button last week and pushed it on to the “half heat” setting…. Stuff was taking a lifetime to be even damp-dry and I was flapping as we have just forked out for a new washing machine ( conked out, only 3.5 years old😡) and an extra freezer for Christmas and batch cooking.
Luckily I noticed my mistake and dryer is fine, but something daft like that is easily done.
OP, check your filter, mines usually clogged with dog hair and little twigs she hides in the washing from her walks!

gamerchick · 05/10/2023 14:05

Check your filter first. Get some towels and a pan, take the stopper out of the tube. Empty the machine. Unscrew the filter and stick your finger in

DreamItDoIt · 05/10/2023 14:13

Could be any number of things as outlined.

If you've checked all the things in previous lists here and your drum will still rotate by hand then it could be the carbon brushes. They are cheap to fix but it's a bit of a pain as you have to remove the motor and fit new ones. Unfortunately with washing machines it's not always easy. How old is the machine - assume our if warranty?

Gabby10 · 05/10/2023 14:16

Mine does this every so often, I just pop it back in and put it on spin only x

doris9034 · 05/10/2023 14:19

fruitpastille · 05/10/2023 13:07

here. I must admit that I don't turn off the electricity and water when I do it!

If you've got kids still in nappies, these are really helpful to put under the filter when draining. (The nappies, not the kids!!!!)

OneTC · 05/10/2023 14:19

My mum's does this sometimes and it's normally because it's not balanced well, spread them out again and just put it on to spin and it normally sorts it

Don't try to be clever with your faux I don't understand. It just makes you look like an idiot.

marshmallowfinder · 05/10/2023 20:18

Is this helpful OP? Are you there?!

Janie1962 · 05/10/2023 21:18

It happened to me when I'd pushed the machine too far back, and the outlet pipe was kinked. I just pulled the washer forward a couple of inches and it worked fine!

eurochick · 05/10/2023 21:23

Mine does this sometimes. But only on the 40 degree cycle, never on the 30 or 60 cycle. I just have to put it on again to spin it off.

It's an old machine that was here when we moved in and I think it is on the way out.

nc14 · 05/10/2023 21:24

This happened to me a few months ago and I had to have the motor brush replaced.
