To travel 3 hours for hair appointment

To give a bit of context:

My old hairdresser left the profession and I miss him, his attention, his style, his communication.

Tried others in same salon but just not the same

Went to new salon locally who coloured my hair from blonde to ginger then tried to tell me it wasn't ginger (twice)

Saw this hairdresser on TikTok and reminded me so much of old hairdresser

Dd went as she lives closer and said it was a great experience and that it's exactly like old hairdresser

So! AIBU to drive 3 hours for a cut and colour?
Currently unwell and off work after essential surgery so want to treat myself.
Gonna share the drive with best friend

If you have time and can afford it, why would it be unreasonable?

TomAllenWife · 05/10/2023 11:33

I have the time and the money (maybe not forever but right now as a treat)

Just feels a bit OTT

Yanbu. I would. Not quite 3 hours, but I moved house last year and still use the same nail tech and hairdressers. They've gone from a 10 min drive to a 45 min drive but I don't care. They're great and worth the travel time!

purplecorkheart · 05/10/2023 11:44

If you want to then go. If your friend is going to share the driving I would ensure that there is something for her to do while you are at the hairdresser. Maybe plan a nice lunch and a catch up with your daughter too.

YANBU

I’ve done that because I struggled to find anyone local to do my hair. Going from a country where there are plenty to choose from to where I have to pretty much research using Instagram and Google was difficult. I luckily was able to find two about an hour away a few years ago that I trust to do my hair.

Isittimeformynapyet · 05/10/2023 11:55

My hair is very curly so I would travel a great distance for someone who can cut it really well.

My previous stylist moved to a salon an hour and a half away and I made that trip every 8 weeks. Now I've found an expert half an hour away who only cuts curly hair.

LadyDanburysHat · 05/10/2023 11:56

I spent 10 years driving 3 hours, and later 2 hours to a good hairdresser. He was based near my Mum so did visit her too. But a good hairdresser is so important.

Shadyboots23 · 05/10/2023 11:57

I do a 2hr round trip to mine. Nobody cuts curly/wavy hair like him

Isanyonereallyanonymous · 05/10/2023 12:06

I relocated from the south east to north lincolnshire last year… I still go back down south every 4-6 weeks, it’s about a 4/4.5 hour journey each way.
Supposedly to go into the office but really for a haircut. Not sure I’d do it regularly if I wasn’t otherwise going to be in the area/have other things to do back there but it feels well worth it to me.
if you have time and can afford to, why not 🤷‍♀️

Tosnoreornottosnore · 05/10/2023 12:08

I have a friend who flew flee from Edinburgh to London to see their hairdresser. Only stopped going once the hairdresser retired .

MILLYmo0se · 05/10/2023 12:11

Very normal in the world of curly haured people! Once we find someone that can actually cut our hair properly lots of us travel quite a distance. Im lucky in that i found someone in my city but she has lots of clients that travel 2+ hours

StrawberryPavlova · 05/10/2023 12:11

I'm going to guess it's James Busby and if so, I'd do it. I live a bit closer than three hours but still a fair distance and I'm considering booking an appointment...

TomAllenWife · 05/10/2023 12:14

@StrawberryPavlova it is 😊😊

Thank you all who've replied and made me feel a bit better and not diva ish.
Not sure DP will agree but it's not his call lol

I met a lady in my hairdresser who drives a 7hr round trip to get her mums haircut at her usual place as she has alzheimers and anything new would upset her, she gets her hair done there too. Why shouldn't you be able to choose when and where your hair is done? Enjoy!

Cowlover89 · 05/10/2023 12:21

Yanbu

Crumpleton · 05/10/2023 12:23

A bad hair day is real so travel however far you want/need to.
It's amazing how much a pamper from a hairdresser can lift your spirits.

janefondofu · 05/10/2023 12:23

I knew it would be James Busby!! He's amazing

TomAllenWife · 05/10/2023 12:26

@Crumpleton it's been a bad hair few months because since they dyed it ginger I haven't been able to have it bleached back to blonde

Honestly I cried for hours the first time and it's made a huge difference during my recovery because I feel shit and look shit!!!!

@janefondofu have you been? DD said he was fabulous

I don't see a problem if you really want to use a particular hairdresser. But don't forget if you are getting colour then you will need a patch test in advance - check if they can send you one - otherwise I guess you will need to make a proper trip out of it.
