AIBU to not give her dd a lift

My dd14 goes to a sports activity with a neighbour's child twice a week. Neighbour's child gets a lift there and back. Dd gets the bus there (10 minutes) and sometimes gets a lift back with friend but often gets the bus back. She doesn't mind this in fact she likes the independence. It's not after dark and the bus is free. Neighbour is miffed because she wants me to take them once a week but I don't want to as I have other stuff to do! I suggested that the girls took the bus together but other mum never takes buses and doesn't want her daughter to. 🙄AIBU in not giving them a lift?

No. Your daughter gets the bus. If she doesn't want her daughter to get the bus, she needs to drive her. It's not your problem

Is this a reverse?
Either way, why would person A expect person B to change existing arrangements which work very well for them, just to make person A's life a tiny bit easier?

Sorry op I’m confused - if your child gets the bus, who is given neighbours kid a lift? You?

I think the other person wants OP to start driving her own daughter and also give other person's daughter a lift once a week, instead of OPs daughter using the bus.

At the moment neighbour is taking her own dd there and back in her car. Dd goes on her own on the bus because she likes getting the bus and also she gets there a bit earlier to chat with friends. Neighbour often offers her a lift back but I've told her she doesn't need to.

Neighbour basically hates public transport whereas I love it. 😄

I think because the OPs daughter sometimes gets a lift back with the other child, the other parent thinks they should have a lift share each doing one day. OPs dd might have to start refusing a lift back so there is no expectation of sharing the driving.

The other parent offers though, it's not like OP asks.

So you have already made it clear to neighbour that she doesn't have to offer your DD a lift home ever @Cappuccinfortwo? If that's the case then this hasn't never been any kind of reciprocal arrangement so just reiterate that it doesn't suit you to give lifts at that time and that your DD is happy getting the bus.

Cappuccinfortwo · 03/10/2023 15:23

Yes I've made it clear but I think she feels awkward driving off without her. Not my problem though!

Tell your DD to politely turn down the lift, should sort it.

GingerIsBest · 03/10/2023 15:34

I just can't get my head around being so anti the bus!? what a strange woman.

Exactly this. No YANBU. You have transported sorted for your DD.

I know a few people who don’t do public transport. Which is bizarre as we’re in zone 1 London!

I know where you are coming from OP. We have had this for years where even close family looked at us like aliens when our young daughter was travelling all over the country on public transport. Why are you not driving her?

Well that same daughter has now been all over Europe, America and even Russia without us (as part of organised trips). She is as happy travelling on the tube in Madrid as she is getting on the bus in our home town. Now that she is at college she now travels all over the country on the train seeing friends and never lets a trip on public transport hinder her movements. In fact she embraces it as it allows her to do college work in peace. Apps for travelling and dealing with interruptions of services are like water off a ducks back.

Bravo for giving your child the freedom to experience public travel. Do not under any circumstances let this other person inflict her opinions onto yours.
