Posting for traffic cause it’s 3am and I can’t sleep. I have been offered a permanent level transfer role in my department. Would you take it?

YANBU stay in Current role - national lead on performance. OR YABU Level transfer - senior analyst

Pros/cons of staying:
-finish projects in pipeline
-high profile networking opportunities ie director level
-job on paper is interesting, working with data in leadership position
-constant HR issues, dealing with really difficult staff, grievances
-my line manager not supportive, team undermines me, constant negativity
-training/induction non existent in subject matter, fend for myself essentially

Pros/cons of transferring:
-working with data in technical function, happens to be my desired career path
-potential future earnings higher
-new opportunity and fresh start
-less scope for basic HR issues
-working with people more similar to me ie passion for data
-better training in new subject matter
-scope for networking, may not be as high profile

What about money? Hours?

Frankly, unless it's a massive pay drop or means more hours/more unsociable hours/same hours but different times, it seems a no brainer to change

Exact same hours and money (£40k) with small chance of analyst salary uplift.

Main benefit of current role is I’m in meetings with really senior staff in a strategic leadership function. The analyst role would be a step back in terms of direct seniority/leadership though it’s same grade, as I’d be more technical.

Is the networking that important to you? What tangible benefits has your current network exposure brought you?

supplycaptain · 03/10/2023 03:37

Good question. Frankly, no & nothing, but it sounds better on a CV I suppose!

Trouble with HR and being undermined is so bad for your health. I’d absolutely go, without a moment’s hesitation. The stress is just really bad for you.
glad you have an alternative!

Good question. Frankly, no & nothing, but it sounds better on a CV I suppose!

For me that’s not enough, there are mutiple ways to network with seniors in an organisation, and networking within the organisation isn’t the only way of networking that has “benefit” on a cv.

Personally I’d take the new role.

supplycaptain · 03/10/2023 03:47

Also am I writing my current job off too easily? Am I just not being resilient? Everyone who’s aware of my challenges in role (HR, senior boss etc) thinks I’m doing the best I can and it’s not stemming from me but from the culture. As I’m staying in company, I don’t want reputation of not seeing things through either

if the only con is it not looking as good on a cv then go for it! HR and a negative line manager are not going to make you happy! Sounds like a good opportunity in an area you love - don’t worry about future cv, live for now!

supplycaptain · 03/10/2023 03:47

The new job would start in new year too btw

How long have you been in your current role @supplycaptain

Dontsparethehorses · 03/10/2023 03:53

If you had no clear reason for leaving people might think your jumping ship but your reason is “happens to be my desired career path” - an opportunity to do this has come up so I’m going to take it!

Ihadenough22 · 03/10/2023 05:19

I think that your current role might look great on paper but the reality is far different. Your dealing with a line manager who gave you no training or arranged no training for you. So you were left to sink or swim.
You have staff under your that are either not doing their jobs or are causing problems with other staff. So you're dealing with them and/or HR department that are happy leaving you to deal with this. Along with this staff are leaving or planning to leave so your going to end up dealing with a higher work load.
Dealing with this on a daily basis is causing you more stress. My feeling is that either the line manager or staff will fuck up and next thing you will be dragged into their mess. Or your next appraisal might not go as well due to how you handle the current situation.

From what you said the other role would not have the line manager or HR problems.
You be doing a job you prefer better and be expanding your current knowledge. I would say to your new boss that you while you're happy to be offered the opportunity to move to X department you were expecting to be offered a higher salary.
Look up online to see what similar jobs are paying elsewhere before doing this. Also take into consideration when your next appraisal is due because that when you should get a pay raise.
If they can't give you a rise straight away have it written in the new work contract that you will receive a pay raise after 6 months in the new role.
Also consider will they pay for you to say do industry recognized qualifications as long term if you want to change employer this will help.

Send like a no beside to me. Current job shit but with perceived kudos, new job better all round but with no perceived kudos.

Go for the better job.

divinededacende · 03/10/2023 12:10

With no other context to go on, your list seems like a no-brainer for me. The new role is your desired career path, it has better long term earning potential and you'll be working with people that share your passion.

Yes, you'll lose your access to senior figures and networking opportunities but what are those opportunities for if it's not to move you towards all of those things?

Is it about the status of leadership and the reflected glory of rubbing shoulders with senior staff? That's totally valid, too. It's up to you to decide what you really value and make the choice.

Gwendimarco · 03/10/2023 12:27

From the info you’ve shared I would go for the new job.

supplycaptain · 03/10/2023 18:14

I suppose so! I work in public sector so senior staff could be ministers for example, it’s interesting work that directly impacts people and I’m right in the mix of those strategic discussions (just to present the data and not as a decision maker though)

I spoke to an analyst today about his role, whilst he doesn’t attend those high level meetings or have much stakeholder engagement in that way, his time is spent creating dashboards and creating training plans which I’d love to get on with! I just don’t have time with the strange team dynamic at play.
