To think the Tories are strategically demonising certain groups in preparation for next election

First we had the endless talk in right wing press about the Channel boats, asylum applications, how much it costs us all to house them etc.

Now today it's the turn of benefit claimants who are going to be penalised if they don't try to find work.

Not saying the above aren't issues but the amount of airtime and press coverage seems disproportionate and tbh its just an all too convenient way of making people look the other way so we forget the shitshow of last 13 years.

People seem to have forgotten Liz Truss crashing the economy (I hear she's back on the scene), the PPE contracts for their mates, don't get me started on Brexit...I could go on.

I can see the Tories flogging these red herrings of asylum, benefit claimants a lot before the election, helped by the right wing press, so they can then position themselves as tough hardliners taking measures against them and portray other parties as weak (rather than - god forbid - compassionate or pragmatic).

I'm sure there are other examples too. Their strategy just seems so bloody transparent to anyone with sense and it's clear they have nothing left to hang their hat on anyway so let's just get people angry about dinghy...

The tragedy is there are a lot of people out there who will fall for it and don't have the critical thinking skills to question what they read in the Daily Express. Plus the opposition parties aren't up to much. I suppose I worry the strategy could work.

The mass illegal immigration is a concern for Europe and America. Hardly a lie or an invention to demonise. I am horrified of the large numbers of uneducated people arriving daily more than ever. Specially with climate change will get worse. I agree the law must be amended. For me is critical that we tackle this before it gets even worse.

Talking about mass displacement as a ‘culture war’ is incredibly idiotic

I’m sure the people crossing the Med and those on Lampedusa are feeling the realities of it right now.

Changing laws wont stop migration across the channel or the Med, only force will do that, its not something we seem willing to talk about.

But it will happen

Europe would soon do something a bit more bold than here. Ignore this issue at your own peril.

What awful views you have. Uneducated? A lot of the refugees from Syria have degrees and were professionals before the war. Clearly you watch GB News and buy into all the demonisation

Very true, my mum was cared for by a Syrian consultant who came here via a cross channel ferry in the 2000s, she was escaping Assad.

Lovely woman, despite being busy, had an endless amount of time for us.

Any adult, from any country, escaping whatever torture etc who comes here via irregular means is classed as "illegal" and would be sent to Rwanda.

thats their plan to reduce migration, no ifs or buts.

No, because they aren't. They are listening to a tiny amount of noisy people who are influencing their decisions with financial incentives.

If the majority of the population wanted this, they would be well ahead in the polls, not lagging well behind.

Well there's only one poll that matters, and 42% voted for them in the last one, much more than for any other party.

We'll see.

I'm not shocked and not sure why I hadn't noticed it as much before. I grew up under new Labour then the coalition and things didn't seem as bad. Now it's just so blatant. Why do people still vote for them? Why don't people twig what they're doing, its so obvious these days.

Because a lot of people are really, REALLY stupid.

Braverman is the face of what the Tory party is now. Basically they are the BNP in all but name.

Brexit set this country down a dark path and we are starting to see the results.

The part the confuses me is surely Braverman must realise the very people she's appealing to would see her stripped of rights and sent overseas just as much as any other person of her background.
