To not expect an interview if I can't spell the company's name

I applied for a job last week and have just realised I spelt the company name wrong!

Like, not the real company name obviously but in my covering letter I put "Greenfield Limited" and they actually spell it "Green Field Limited."

In my defence, the social media, websites, emails etc are all "greenfieldlimited" and their logo is block capitals with a tiny space. There are more local press articles about them which spell it as Greenfield than Green Field, but apparently that's wrong. Aaargh I'm so annoyed with myself. That's scuppered that hasn't it?

Not great, but if you're an otherwise excellent candidate I'd still give you a shot. Depends how competitive it is.

TulipsTulipTulips · 02/10/2023 19:58

Ouch. Assuming I had decent alternatives you probably wouldn’t be in my Yes pile. But written accuracy is particular important in my role, you might be fine in others!

nutsnutspistachionuts · 02/10/2023 20:11

It’s a creative role. I think I’d have been a strong but somewhat leftfield candidate so I’m going to try and forget about it and if I ever hear from them again, it’s a bonus.

I wouldn’t rule you out just because you got a slight nicety of company name spelling wrong. It’s not great obv, but sounds like ppl get it wrong all the time.

Now the candidates I was reviewing last week who couldn’t even get the job title they were applying for right…

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 02/10/2023 20:16

If that was the only thing wrong with your application, it wouldn't bother me.

Theoriginalmrscillianmurphy · 02/10/2023 20:16

This would not bother us in my job at all!

Chances are they're used to it.

Papyrophile · 02/10/2023 20:19

Sorry, but as a person who once recruited for editorial roles, you would have failed. Correct SPaG is a minimum threshold. Nobody has time to do that once you are hired, so the application needs to be perfect. Literate, relevant, and engaging. But in an editorial capacity, you need to be ruthlessly correst so you can proof everyone else's stuff, fast.

Papyrophile · 02/10/2023 20:21

So, I just failed my own test, because I didn't proof properly!

dayofcheese · 02/10/2023 20:22

Yes tbh I'd not bother interviewing you

needtonamechangeagain · 02/10/2023 20:36

I have an odd spelling for my business also creative and totally ignore wrong spellings.

I'm more of a coffee cup, glass tester in interviews. Not spellings.

Leftfield or left field 😉?

Papyrophile · 02/10/2023 20:39

Your prerogative @dayofcheese ; it's your vacancy, and you know who you want to work with.

TicTacNicNak · 02/10/2023 20:42

It's not the worst error out there. I think a lot will depend on how many other applications they get and how strong they are.

madeleine85 · 02/10/2023 20:42

I did this with a bigger company once... automatic rejection email within 3 minutes. Whats for you won't go past you OP.

Yes. Although I think it probably depends on the field of work. So you might have a chance OP.

MouseKeys · 02/10/2023 20:45

I did exactly this when I was interviewing for my last job and I am a copy writer which made it 1000 times worse but they liked me at the interview and I got the job anyway so you never know!! Good luck!

I love the irony of this 😂😂

Papyrophile · 02/10/2023 21:11

Too quick to post. It's a classic fail @Ollifer .

Correst???? You can't even spell properly!

Papyrophile · 02/10/2023 21:33

I can spell, but my typing is sh1t!

Papyrophile · 02/10/2023 21:37

It may be affected to say so, but I do understand the effect of spelling correctly... and my typing is still appalling, darling @Manopadmanaban.

AlltheFs · 02/10/2023 21:42

Depends.

I work for a University that is frequently misspelt by one letter and recruit to a lot of roles.

It depends on the role, entry level and especially where English is not the first language (frequent in some junior roles) I am forgiving if the rest of the application is good.
Senior roles, likely to be a No. But I might relent if it was otherwise perfect/we are desperate.

I am also more generous if anyone applies under the Disability Confident arrangement that we have. Ultimately I can teach someone the company name and I don’t want to lose a good candidate just because they are dyslexic for example.

I once applied for a job and got my own name wrong! We were living abroad and I was rushing to catch the post, the phone rang and when I returned to the form I completed it quickly, dashing to the post. When I attended the interview in the UK their first question was What's your first name??? Apparently I had put my surname twice but I got the job so don 't fret too much.

meanderingthrough · 03/10/2023 12:00

I’ve worked for a couple of firms where staff regularly spell their own product names wrongly. If you’re a detail nerd, you’re often the exception! Wouldn’t write it off yet.

nutsnutspistachionuts · 03/10/2023 12:30

Thanks all. I do actually have editorial experience, although this job would not require it at all. I've hired plenty of people myself and personally it would not really bother me for job of this nature - it's a creative director type thing which normally goes more on past experience/CV. But clearly it would others, so I guess it depends what the management team are like!
