To think it’s not weird that I like sport

My friend was saying at the weekend that she thinks I am really weird because I like sport!

I watch a lot of sport- Ryder cup at weekend, rugby, tennis, occasional cricket.
i love big sporting occasions like Rugby World Cup, Ryder cup, Wimbledon, Olympics etc.

I don’t play sport but I like watching it. DH & are a big rugby fans particularly being Welsh. My son plays footy. You get the idea! I even watch a bit of Snooker if Ronnie o Sullivan is playing!!

Is it weird? I felt like I was particularly unusual after comments but surely I am not? The implication is that it’s weird for a woman to like sport too!

It's definitely not weird but I've often wondered why it is that it seems to be men that enjoy watching sport over women.

There's sports that I don't mind watching eg. When Liverpool play, athletics and some of the olympics but overall I wouldn't miss it if I could never watch it again, it's strange because it's something I'd like to enjoy and I played sport's growing up. It's like I feel strangely envious of people for whom it's a passion and enjoy watching it but it's just something I can't make myself care about.

ilovelamp82 · 02/10/2023 17:00

Nope, I mostly watch sport. Interestingly though, my husband and sons aren't really interested.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 02/10/2023 17:00

Not weird. I also watch a lot of sport too.

jeaux90 · 02/10/2023 17:01

Nope not weird. I watch a lot of sports although I did used to play a lot of sports too but things like the Olympics I am glued to...you need two screens in your home office though Grin

Theoriginalmrscillianmurphy · 02/10/2023 17:02

I love sports and I play on a football team.

devildeepbluesea · 02/10/2023 17:04

I watch loads of sport but the only stuff I do nowadays is running and gym classes.

TrustPenguins · 02/10/2023 17:05

Not weird at all. I love sport too.

Hellocatshome · 02/10/2023 17:05

Not weird I watch a lot of sports especially big occasions and can get behind sports even if its not something I normally watch, for example I got very invested in the Tour if Britain recently but never normally watch cycling. I did however try and fail to watch the American Football that was on TV this weekend, that absolutely baffles me.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 02/10/2023 17:06

I think it’s weird that your friend thinks it’s weird, tbh. It’s a strangely old fashioned and sexist comment.

DH and I are both very interested in horse racing and (mainly) world tour cycling. He’s a cricket fan as well, which doesn’t ring my bell, but then, he doesn’t much care for gymnastics .

It’s rather nice to have shared interests , gives you something to discuss and even the occasional outing / treat.

loverofpants · 02/10/2023 17:06

I watch all kinds but can't actually do any! Football weekly, tennis regularly and boxing and cricket a lot too.

HollaHolla · 02/10/2023 17:10

I watch a lot of sport, and used to play (hockey, rugby, water polo) as well, before my mobility was rubbish. I still swim a lot, and cycle too. I like to watch rugby, tennis, Ryder Cup, Olympics/Commonwealth Games, cycling (track & road), and a bit of horse jumping. In fact, pretty much anything but football, snooker & darts. The atmosphere at a live event is incredible, and have had some amazing holidays based on going to see sports.
Weirdly, it's men who seem to have more of a 'thing' about it. At a wedding once (which fell on the same day as the Open Golf), I'd nipped to check the score. I was able to knowledgeably update and discuss with some of the guys at the table I was at. They were all flabbergasted. That says a lot more about the men, than me, I think!!!
Anyway. Continue enjoying the sports. It's better than some other pastimes!

Pleidiolwyfimgwlad73 · 02/10/2023 17:13

@HollaHolla yes I get sexism too. My dad was a rugby ref & my husband also played so I know a lot about rugby rules. I’ve had some really weird reactions to my knowing some of the rules. It’s so bizarre!

I detest watching sport.
I never got into it when I was a kid, didn't watch it with friends/family, didn't (and still don't) have a football team I supported.
I can't understand why anyone would want to watch sport - it just doesn't interest me.
But that's just me and my opinion of it for myself - I am well aware that other people find it interesting, exciting even, so no you're no weirder than anyone else who likes a different genre of TV or whatever. I don't get the fascination of "reality" TV either but there's millions of people who can't get enough of that.

Hbh17 · 02/10/2023 17:33

I love watching sport, live and on TV. Not all sports - I dislike football, snooker, boxing.... & probably others I've forgotten.
But I adore certain other sports - proper hardcore fan - and get really caught up in the Olympics. Most sport generates an excitement that it's hard to find anywhere else, and there's no reason why it can't be enjoyed by both women and men.

HernesEgg · 02/10/2023 17:34

I think it’s weird anyone likes it. DH works in professional sport, and I have sat through a lot of pro tennis, formula one, rugby, and premier league football, and my main feeling (when I look up from my novel) is bafflement. (I do like fan chants, hakas, and general fan behaviour. I should probably just sit with my back to the action. The most fun I’ve ever had at a premier league game was at at Goodson Park in a minor riot full of police horses.)

It’s like being colourblind or tonedeaf.

booksandbeans · 02/10/2023 17:35

Nope, not weird at all. Same way people watch every single soap out there - not for me at all, don’t really get it, but each to their own.

Comedycook · 02/10/2023 17:37

Actually thinking about myself and my female friends and relatives none of us watch sport regularly...I might watch the world cup or a bit of Wimbledon but that's it. I don't think lots of women watch huge amounts of sport but it's hardly unusual.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 02/10/2023 17:39

Not weird to like what you like.

Personally, I don't really enjoy watching sport, but that's me. We're all different.

I think your friend is the weird one for suggesting that you're weird because your interests are different from hers.

girlfriend44 · 02/10/2023 17:51

She's the weird one not you. Sport is great.
Why are you worried about what she thinks anyway?

DH has a large family of sportmad women. His mum, in her eighties, has a completely pure interest in sport — she will watch anything from golf to athletics to football to rugby to tennis. And most of his season ticket seat mates at his PL club are women.

TokyoSushi · 02/10/2023 17:57

Love it and watch absolutely loads, in a minority amongst my friends though, they're missing out!

EaudeJavel · 02/10/2023 17:58

to be honest I don’t play sport but I like watching it. I always find that a bit weird, but that has nothing to do with your gender!

For me being "sportsmad" means you are being sporty yourself, but you do whatever you like. No one expects everyone glued to Bake Off to start baking cakes either 😂

TheTecknician · 02/10/2023 21:28

It's not weird, it's honest. After all, we have sportswomen and sportsmen. However, I am a man and I have absolutely no interest in any sport at all. That's also honest, not weird, but perhaps not readily understood. It's made one or two ignorant f***s question my sexuality before now, but that ain't my problem.

We like what we like. It doesn't matter what other people think or say.

This - just don’t get the appeal!

TheTecknician · 02/10/2023 21:39

I think another thing with sports and their fans is convention. Men, in the UK at least, are expected to support a football team (preferably a Premier League one) and be able to use the subject as an icebreaker or conversation starter with people they've never met before. Probably men! Anyone who doesn't comply is regarded as 'weird', or with some suspicion at the least. The flip side is a woman who holds a season ticket and that is completely off limits to the ignorant types I've already alluded to! That sort of dinosaur shit is ingrained heavily in society.
